KNICKS' BUTLER DEADLINE EXTENDED

July 18, 2006 -- The Knicks have been granted an extra day to decide whether to match third-string center Jackie Butler's three-year, $7 million offer sheet from the Spurs, but indications are stronger than ever they don't plan to do so.

Because of a clerical error on Butler's offer sheet, the Knicks have until Thursday, instead of tomorrow, to make their decision.

That's eight days to realize matching the offer is fiscal insanity. Butler would cost the Knicks $14 million, including luxury tax. The Knicks plan to make San Antonio wait until Thursday to announce their decision.

Nobody from the Knicks has even contacted Butler or his agent, Keith Glass, since the offer sheet was presented last Wednesday. Butler elected to skip summer league, so the Knicks have no idea what kind of shape he's even in.

The Knicks already have two centers in Eddy Curry and Jerome James, and are counting heavily on both of those big investments.

Well...at least we have the roster spot for Jefferies....

Keeping Butler at that contract would be far from fiscal insanity. It'd be a prudent investment. The extra luxury tax money is a drop in the bucket compared to what the franchise has paid in recent years.

I really hope we at least keep Woods, though I'm doubting it since there hasn't been a peep about him in the media.

The contract is cheap in the NBA market for centers, plain and simple. Marc Berman continues to prove to be an absolute moron with his editorializing in these articles.

I think jackie b is better than nazr. But I'd prefer we go in a different direction of both of them.

There are players out there that we can get that fit our team and system much better.

I think the subject of this thread speaks volumes of my feelings.

I was just gonna say who cares what Berman thinks. Berman is the crappiest media person, not to mention unreliable, on the face of the planet.

Bottom line, for 3 years 7 mil in the open market you're never gonna get a better bargain on an NBA center when considering his age, overall skill level and on court work ethic. That the Knicks can't find a spot for him because they have millions committed to Jerome James is a travesty and complete lunacy.

Jackie B is not better than Nazr... Nazr put up 20/10 type games on more than 1 occasion when he was in a Knicks' uniform... Jackie's got some upside, but not nearly the conditioning to remain effective for extended minutes over a full season.

This was poor of us to not resign Jackie. His deal was extremely low for an NBA center. I also agree with TMS; Nazr is MUCH better than Jackie B.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Yeah, stay away from all the big men who work hard for everything they get and have the ability to be nice and productive and are also young. We don't need them.

in your last post you said you thought Jackie was better than Nazr... so which is it? you can't possibly think that Big Turd James is better than Nazr Mohammed, can you? Nazr would probably be challenging Eddy Curry for a starting spot at C on this team if you held an open competition.

fiscal insanity is signing Jerome JAmes to 5 years and $30mm. Mo Taylor isnt helping much either.

It would be a shame to let one mistake result in another. JB showed a lot of promise last year, and that contract is reasonable. I have no doubt what so ever he would be the backup center and with Curry's foul trouble and habit of always being in shape there is good opportunity there.

Insanity is not making a smart move because you already have Jerome James. Kinda like paying for him twice.

Id prefer an athletic shotblocker. But 3yrs 7mil is a cheap price. And the upside is there. He has potential to be a solid rebounder and be a decent banger down low. I don't get the reasoning for not resigning him. It can't be the money.

Hey, I really like Jackie Blue (he's light years better imo than JJ) and i've always thought of him as a part of our young longterm core. However, I think you guys are overlooking the obvious.

This is no different than when some one talks about the likelihood of the Knicks (Isiah) doing a trade with Boston (Ainge) or especially Indiana (Bird)...(about as much chance as LB being brought back to coach the Knicks next year). It ain't happenin

Because transactions like these come with so much baggage they're highly highly unlikely to happen (see possible NY/Ind Artest trade - they lost him for nothing).

You can rationalize and ruminize and posturlize to you're blue in the face. The fact is Larry don't like Isiah and vice versa.

Thusly...despite all of the posts to come after this about how it's just business and Isiah this and that and LB this and that... the fact remains that IT IS PERSONAL.

Isiah has certainly considered making the move to resign Jackie because of Isiah discovered him.

However:

(1) The major obstacle to resigning Jackie....is his agents relationship with LB (lawyer is babies daddy and does either party really wanna
have to deal with the other).

(2) The major hesitation to resigning Jackie...is the money Isiah didn't want to have to pay due to Dolan's demand and Pop and Co's
(Spurs) initiating this(rest assured that in addition to them taking on a talented Center prospect at a good price it was also a way of
swiping back at Isiah for the LB lobotomization).

Jackie is just caught in the middle (man I wish I could be left hanging in the middle for 7 Mill )

So...sad to say and in reference to the thread title..... Jackie Blue we hardly knew ye'?

P.S. My fear is that Isiah might not be considering Qyntel because LB wanted him. Please Isiah, please resign Qyntel...PLEASE!!!

If Larry were still coaching he'd be blamed for this. You know... "hates kids" and "wants Ratliff", etc

But since Isiah doesn't want him I guess he's just not as good a value as a 30 yr old out of shape Jerome James...

I mean, only a senile saboteur like Larry would play veteran he overpaid for over a promising kid, right?
