Isiah has interest in Jeffries

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Isiah Thomas says he is not actively pursing deals for free agents, but behind the scenes the Knicks' president and coach continues to search for ways to bolster his roster.
One player who continues to draw interest from the Knicks is Washington forward Jared Jeffries, a restricted free agent. According to sources, the Knicks have had conversations with Jeffries' agent, Andy Miller, in recent days as negotiations between Jeffries and the Wizards have stalled. Jeffries is considering accepting Washington's one-year qualifying offer for approximately $3 million, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Miller, who also represents free agent forward Al Harrington, did not return phone calls yesterday.

The Knicks can offer Jeffries their mid-level exception, starting at approximately $5.2 million. The Knicks are reluctant to add salary, but the 6-11 Jeffries, who can play four positions, would give the team a versatile player who is regarded as a strong defender. The 24-year-old Jeffries averaged 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds in 77 games last season

Jeffries would be a great pickup. We would finally get a real sf who can play the 4 also.

I just also read that the Wizards signed Darius Songalia to a 5 year / $23mm deal. First thought is....WHAT ARE THEY, NUTS!!!!! Second thought is that this may factor into the Wiz not wanting to match a mid level for Jared Jefferies.

5 year contracts seem like forever. It's just dumb. So much changes in 5 years... why sign a guy like Songalia for 5 years? This is almost like the Jerome James signing.

Why must we target one dimensional players? Not that scoring is needed with the group we currently have, but it's just the point. This guy is going into his 5th season, yet hasn't really improved one aspect of his game.

He's not the defensive stopper some people make him out to be either. Yeah, he's long, quick and probably better then anyone else we have... But the entire mid-level, come on! Nobody else is looking at him for a reason guys.

well, I would take Jeffries over Jackie B.

Five years is a long time, but we're talking about a very young player.

I'd offer him max MLE- could we do a s&t and send them butler?

You many be right as far as why should we offer Jeffries the whole MLE exception but Jefferies is far from being one dimensional. Saying Jeffries is one dimensional is like saying Tyshawn Prince is one dimensional. The kid can bring up the ball with pressure on him, shoot the three, post up with the short midrange shot, and he can play d. Now is he Artest on defensive end? NO! But he can play solid d which we are lacking.

Good God, I might just keel over and die! This is great, Jeffries is a excellent defensive player and someone I have been mentioning Isiah sohuld get since midway through last season.

Jeffries is a great ballhawk defender, and the Knicks need as many of these guys as they can get becuase this team doesn't come close to having enough defense. I think Jeffries would play pretty well in this new offense Isiah is trying to setup. Could be very interesting!

Good points!

I would take Jeffries over Butler any day of the week.

The question is do you take Jefferies over Woods?

the only drawback for me is that i wouldn't sign him to a max MLE contract (even though he's probably worth it)... i just don't want to take on any longterm contracts at this point unless the player we're getting is an Allstar calibre talent.

For all the stuff that Jeffries supposedly can do, he doesn't really do it very often. I'd pass on him.

What does Jeffries bring that we don't already have?

I've never seen him play, but looking from the stats (i know that's not the best resource for evaluating a player), he doesn't score AT ALL and gets mediocre board numbers for a guy his height. Also, he's been in the NBA for 4 years (didn't really play 1st year though) and hasn't improved, at least through the stats. The kid better have some insane intangibles to be as good as you guys claim.

My questions: what are those intangibles that aren't displayed in his stats. And how much are you willing to pay him? Why not just reach for Q2, who would be cheaper?

that pretty much renders the rest of your post entirely moot.

Yeah, I knew someone would say that. I guess he's so amazing to watch that you can just ignore all the stats, huh?

if i just looked at Bruce Bowen's stats, i'd think he was just another scrub player off the bench... but anyone who's seen him play can tell u his value to any team supercedes the #'s you see on his ESPN player profile... that's not to say i think JJ is as good a defender as Bruce Bowen... but worthy of a MLE contract? certainly... would i sign him to that contract? not unless i can unload someone on the roster to make room for him.

Wow. This the problem with most Knicks fans who are in support of guys like Marbury and Francis becuase all they look for is stats. Jeffries is one of the best defensive players in the NBA, he can guard every position on the court and always guards the best player on the opposition. He might not be a huge offensive player but I can see him finding success in a system like Isiah is trying to implament, based on passing and he wouldn't have to worry about Arenas jacking up 25 shots a game. Jeffries is just exactly what this team needs.

You really have to watch a player to be able to comment on him.
