gunsnewing - 06-29-2006 4:22 PM He better be significantly better Marcus Williams

Otay, boys and girls.. it's time to be honest and admit there is an outside chance that you could have been a slight bit carried away in the emotion of draft night and NOT the analysis of where Balkman can help the Knicks wiins some basketball games with the intangibles that don't always show up in the box score.

nyny - you are a gentleman and a scholar.

and we quote>> With a mid range jumper & spot up jumper he could be an allstar. If he can maintain this quality play when the games count.

He can guard 2-4 position.
He has a knack for stls and blks
Has good handle and court vision
Is also a very good finisher.
Can run the break, lead the break, fill the lanes, & finish.

I never doubted that Zeke got a quality player. The draft is one place where you cannot doubt his ability/track record.

One thing I can pretty much guarantee is that when Balkman comes out and proves himself to be an NBA player, PHX will change their tune and say "yeah, we woulda grabbed him at 27" to make themselves look better.

I trust Marty Blake, and people who actualy watch basketball carefully, more than the self-proclaimed experts in the MSG theatre crowd who put on a silly show for the cameras on draft night.

i give Isiah the benefit of the doubt cuz of his past track record of recognizing young talent... i'm keeping an open mind on Balkman, partly cuz i've never seen him play an extended stretch of games, & partly cuz of the Isiah factor... Marcus Williams can blow up in NJ for all i care, as long as Balkman's doing his thing in NY & helping us win ballgames... i have a feeling he's going to be 1 of my favorite players this season (a-la JYD)

misterearl,

You aren't gonna get the one guy you want to confess, and the others will run the usual "I never said that" routine.

But please bring this thread back early in the season.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

there's such a thing as liking a player and understanding you overpaid.

Earl, if your starved a big mac tastes really good. Does it justify paying $20 for one? When if you just waited a couple minutes you could have had the same burger, fries, a coke, 2 apple pies and 10 bucks for gas?

But hey... lets all enjoy the big mac, regardless of what we paid.

What is it we're confessing to? Oh yeah: "I confess that There is an outside chance that I could have been a slight bit carried away in the emotion of draft night." (Not sure I did, but if it makes y'all happy, I'll confess to it. Thanks to misterearl for making this an easy confession! Talk about hedging! )

Luckily, I'm not a basketball expert, so I have no problem admitting I'm wrong, but I actually think it's too early to tell. Maybe Balkman becomes an important piece for the Knicks. Maybe Williams becomes a serviceable point guard. I don't think Summerleague performance tells us enough. Also, even if one or the other of these guys doesn't do well in the first year, he might blossom a bit later on, so....

What is it with some of the guys around here, needing to be "right" all the time? Basketball might be a zero sum game, but I'm not sure posting here has to be. Just a thought.

How many times.....Rolando is a nice player, guys are happy we got him...guys are NOT happy we got him at 20-me included. Why is it so hard to understand?

yes, basically everyone likes him, but thinks we overpaid, basically that's been the theme of all the so called downers. It's not that they are downers, it's that they would have acquired the same players for less.

It's just a matter of a being able to ascertain market value better than zeke.

His only downfall is that zeke can't judge market value.

bull****.

Curry, lee, nate, frye, crawford, marbury, balkman, JJ and others were all acquired AT market value, and when you get a gander at this coming year's salaries, you'll realize we got them all on the cheap.

But for now, you have to let everyone go nuts and play yahoo fantasy and trade players for below market value because they were able to dupe the one sucky player in the league into trading curry for a hand full of beans.

Market value is just that, Market value.

& an excellent thought it is... sometimes it seems like it's more important to be able to say "i told you so" for some posters than it is for this team to succeed... personally, i'm like you... i don't claim to be an expert & the more i can learn about the players on this team, the better... personally i think it's pretty silly to formulate defining opinions about any player based on a small sample.

Ok...so using your logic, Zeke actually judges talent and assessed market value in this draft better than EVERY expert that graded this draft and the other 29 GM's that had Balkman dropping to the late second round, if he was drafted at all?

Man, it he marekt is that dumb, maybe you'd hope for us to be smarter. But hey, if the other fools do something, we should do it too.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

MARKET VALUE? For a draft pick? The guy that everyone thinks should be of more value was passed over 20 times and yet Isiah is the one who can't judge value? Geez it just never ends. Can some of you guys just drop your anti Isiah bias for second. The guy has a VERY good track record in the draft and as yet a draft picks value is always yet to be determined. How many guys get picked late and turn out to be FAR better than most of the guys picked ahead of them.

Actually I used this almost same argument-and researched it- to prove my point in another thread. My point in that thread was it is better to pick up a guy that slipped as opposed to reaching for a guy way before he is slated to go. I looked it up-I went back to the '95 draft and took it up to 2000-I had to go to work and never got back to it- and found around 32 guys who fell/slipped that were better players now than they were in relation to when they were drafted. I grant you that some guys just worked harder to get where they are-but most of these guys that I listed were slated to go higher than they were drafted and fell. The rate of success for guys that drop/slip in the draft is greater than the rate of success for guys that are reached for ahead of guys that were ranked higher than them.

But I do have to admit the whole premise of this argument is a little weird because these guys that slipped were better players than guys that were reached for-which is why they were ranked higher in the first place.

No one on this board said they disliked Balkman as a player, but believe it or not, there is such a thing as getting value for your pick. I'm ecstatic Balkman is playing well in summerleague and I'm happy the Knicks have him. I'm not happy about the fact that the Knicks could have traded down and gotten more draft picks out of the ordeal or drafted Marcus Williams at 20 and Balkman at 29.

This has nothing to do with Balkman as a player, everyone on this board likes him as a player. But this is getting annoying when people continually do NOT read posts and instead browse over them and take what they want from them.

Market value? 4 yrs about $5 mil for Renaldo. Nothing wrong with that value! It's better value than spending several mil to pay Marcus to spend his 4 yrs in prison for stealing more property!
