This kid's got great attitude, hustle, good hands and the potential to be a beast in the inside... San Antonio knows exactly what they are doing... this kid has tools and a motor, was a trusted presence in the 4th quarter and he is only 21 years old.

This past year was a weak draft classs...
I would place him in the top 15...

Solid player, good fundamentals, good character (i think?) -- I would love to keep him.

However, "exceptional upside"? "Motor"? Not too sure about those descriptions.

a 21 year old with his ability and upside should be retained.

Considering the money we piss away in great amounts 7 mil over 3 years is a drip in a pail of missdirected finacial irresponsability we call MSG. The Attorney fees for larry and Anucha will likely be as much.

Jackie Blue is better then Jerome James now and in the future. If Jeromes dumb contract is the reason for not keeping him, shame on us.

We did good plucking him out of the CBA, lets continue a good story!

PAY JACKIE BLUE!

Me too. Worst case scenario, hes a SOLID backup center for 4 years.
$3M per is worth it. We have paid/are paying a lot of bums more money
than that for much less performance: Travis Knight, Luc Longley, Dudley, JJ.

He probably gets drafted. Might go somewhere between 34-41, second round (I like Paul Davis' ability better, and I like Jackie a little better than James Augustine - so maybe somewhere in there). But I like Justin Williams better than all of these guys and he didn't get drafted (neither did Pittsnogle) so who the hell knows. Definitely worth keeping though, I don't trust Jerome James as a backup at all.

I bite the bullet and try to convince Dolan to buy out the last 2 years of Malik's contract by telling him it's absolutely the last bit of financial irresponsibility but completely necessary moving forward. We need that roster spot! After that, I ink up Qyntel Woods AND Butler. It's such a no-brainer I can't believe it hasn't been done already.

this should be a easy decision. I would gladly be willing to eat jerome James contract if it means keeping Butler... Good kid, just 21, big man, good hands and talented... easy decision..

why on earth would u want to overpay like that when all you need to do is match SA's 3 year $7 mil offer to retain him?

Not saying we have to. Of course you do the cheapest possible deal. Just saying if it came down to it, I'd be willing to give him that.

colorfl1 - Where would he have gone in the 2006 draft?

Excellent question.. It depends on whether you follow the so-called "experts" like lemmings to the sea.. or you do some research and think for yourself.

Lone Answer - Jackie Butler's high school history, and decision making, is a difficult read. He received some poor advice and paid the price. BUT... if you peel away the politics and take a close look at his skill-set alone...

... now, just to balance the scales of perception - visualize Jackie Butlers skill-set in a 6'11 Eurpean League player coming in at 20 years old and ask yourself....

Could Jackie take Bargnani in a one on one drill?

How would Jackie defend Bargnani?

You do the math.

Short answer - first round between 10-15

10-15 is possible. You dont know if those 2-3 years of college expose his weeknesses or pump up his strengths. I've seen enough of JB to be pretty confident he would have beaten up quite nicely on most NCAA talent.

Assuming we do sign him I wonder if that alone merits him getting a fair shot at a starting spot. I could certainly see him coming into camp in great shape and beating out Curry or Frye for the starting spot at PF or C, especially if one of them is banged up (Frye) or fat (Curry, as if I needed to specify).

With JJ, Curry, Frye, Butler, Lee, Malik and Maurice all under contract we have 7 guys for 2 positions. Thats a big ouch. If you want to put Lee at SF (he's not) OK, you still have a monumental log jam. 3 of those guys are getting nothing but DNPs/inactive. Should be interesting to see how Isiah "I'm the leader" deals with this roster he created.

in that situation you have to bench JJ, Rose, and Taylor. they're the oldest and least productive players out there - i'm expecting that frye this year should be at least as capable a low-post scorer as taylor, lee should be able to most of what malik rose can do on the court, and that jerome james is once again a waste of space. it's a lot of money for 3 guys that won't play, but it's the best course of action for now and the future.

fish.mike - Jackie could do work for our beloved Knicks in the paint. His understated shot blocking is a nice bonus.

Imagine a 6'10, 6'11, 6.95 frontcourt shiftline of Butler (inside) , Channing Frye (outside) and David Lee (freelance).

I could care less about hard positions like "small" this or "power" that.

"best 5 play" is the kind of Isiah philosophy that has had us under .500 since Howard Eisley started at PG. What we need is guys playing that compliment each. Guys that fill roles. THATS what wins games, not the "best 5." Save that for fantasy leagues and playstations.
