July 11, 2006 -- LAS VEGAS - Jackie Butler is not with the Knicks' summer-league team, but Isiah Thomas said yesterday he expects the free-agent center to be with the club in October at training camp in Charleston, S.C.
The Knicks have extended a $1 million qualifying offer to the 6-10 center, but his agent, Keith Glass, believes he will get a larger offer from one of four teams. However, the Knicks can match, and sources within the club said they plan to, within reason.

"We like Jackie, we want to keep him, but it's a long summer," Thomas said. "Our intention is to re-sign him."

Thomas said he wanted Butler to play summer league but understood the risk of him getting injured.

Butler is perfect insurance in case Jerome James reports out of shape again. And Butler's presence could prod James. Meanwhile, the Bulls are monitoring the situation since they are looking for a low-post scorer

What I want to see is some reporter ask him straight up what his plans are for Qyntel Woods. I'd love to hear another "our intention is to re-sign him" for Woods too. I wanted Woods over Butler all along if it came down to it for a last roster spot but sadly it looks like this kid Kenny Adeleke can't play so retaining Butler is now equally important to me.

it doesn't say they will match any offer. the offer has to be reasonable and Isiah didn't guarantee that they would keep him.

"We like Jackie, we want to keep him, but it's a long summer," Thomas said.

but i do think he will be back with the knicks next year.

Isiah now thinking Butler doesn't do it

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Isiah Thomas is having second thoughts on matching the three-year, $7 million offer sheet Jackie Butler received from the San Antonio Spurs.

According to sources, Thomas is surprised that the center, who is entering his second season, managed to secure a contract that dwarfs the $900,000 the Knicks offered him. The same source said there is a "50-50 chance" that Butler won't return. Thomas has until Wednesday to match the offer.

The Knicks already have 14 players under contract, and Thomas is finding it hard to justify signing Butler for $7 million when he could be the team's third-string center behind Eddy Curry and Jerome James.

Thomas, however, has a soft spot for the 6-10 Butler, whom he signed out of the CBA two years ago on the advice of former scout Del Demps, who now works for the Spurs. There is a good chance that former Knicks coach Larry Brown gave his good friend, San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich, a thorough scouting report on Butler.

The Knicks have had strange dealings with the Spurs in recent years. Three years ago, Thomas agreed to send Kurt Thomas to San Antonio for Malik Rose only to rescind the offer at the last minute.

The following season, Thomas sent Nazr Mohammed to the Spurs for Rose, and Mohammed helped San Antonio win the title. Now, Butler could be replacing Mohammed, who is now a Piston.

wait he doesn't want to give him 3yrs 7mm? We're paying Shanderson 8mm to play for Miami!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh its going to be hilarious when Curry picks up 2 quick fouls right off the bat and Jerome James comes stumbling in!

all hail the signing of Jerome James. WE NEED A CENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow... so let me get this straight. If we waited a year we could have gotten a 21 year old that has actual upside for 3 years and $8mm. A guy thats always in shape and always plays hard.

But instead we signed a 30 year old fat bastard that averages 50 games a year, is never in shape and pretty sucks anyway. But we gave him 5 years and $30mm. But it aint my money!!! I would much rather root for Jerome! He's so cool

Karate James is going to prove all the haters wrong this year! HE will play 60 games and average only 5 fouls a game in 10 minutes!

I don't think Butler will be resigned. IT used the words "was a good player for us" yesterday. That means he is gone. UNlesss he is just effen with SA which is entirely possible.

I think it is a huge mistake to let him go. The kid is better than James now and shows more brains than Curry now. He is also a better rebounder than Curry.

Even if we're not going to keep him, sign him anyway. Obviously there's interest in him and he might be a nice asset to throw in a trade if we want to dump any big contract (like Francis) on anybody.

Hearing Isiah speak it was more he wanted to see how summer league went and if we could have found another replacement for him.

IMHO we have and at $1 mill...I think we should let jackie go.

Raven, if the spurs want to take him in a trade for a pick, that's cool, but if they just want to drive up his price, that's another thing entirely.

Who are we talking about exactly? Adeleke?

i don't know, I didn't see much from adeleke. he looked like Jackie B did his first year with the knicks...just out there, gifted, but slow to adjust to the actual offense.

I'd take any ofthe other guys, Udeke (is that his name, slow morning), take my lumps with JJ and possibly work MoT into the mix (he's got much better offense).

But at this point, it's kind of silly to think we could get anything for Jackie B.

why would anybody give us a pick for jackie butler? Would you give one up for him?

the Knicks will rarely admit to mistakes. I dont think there is one fane whod rather have JJ out there over Butler, but the fact is we paid him 30+mm and signing Butler may signal that we made a multi-million $ mistake.

lets see what develops. you know if we keep him our managment made a prescient move-- if we let him got for nothing, he scked
