I really thought it was going to be a big test for Channing and I hate to say it, but I think he failed it. Amare is playing on one leg and still controlled Frye handily.

Where did I say that Holfresh? Please stop putting words in my mouth, you CONSTANTLY do that.

I figured after a year in this league where Frye showed his inability to play defense against anyone that he would be ready to play some defense on a good player in this league. That didn't happen though.

But please show me where I defined his career by it. Im looking pretty hard at my post and I don't see where I said that.

Did you happen to see Amare getting like 40 against Tim Duncan in the playoffs few years back...

You said he failed the big test...WHAT BIG TEST???

So far Channing is exactly what he was in college. I highly skilled offensive bigman who is a below average defender and rebounder. He was handled by Ike Diogu who played center in the bigman weak pac 10. Channing Frye may one day become a good NBA defender/rebounder but its going to be a LONG wait. He tries hard but he's got zero instincts.

I actually w/ Briggs that Lee is a better fit for this team at PF right now

Amare did that on healthy knees. He is coming off surgery here and is probably coming back too soon still yet he manhandled Frye. Everytime you go up a good player at the same position you are playing it should bring out your BEST game. I didn't see that from Frye.

Did you watch the game?

No I didn't but it's summer league...Last year in summer league he totally sucked...He had foul problems and many question whether or not he can play the 4 position or if he can get time on teh floor because he is so foul prone...It's summer league....He turned into one of the top prospects coming out last year and was considered the runner up to Chris Paul for rookie of the year until Larry benched him...nd yes Larry did bench him....Lee is no where close to the talent that Frye is...Not even close....

If summerleague didn't matter then they wouldn't have it. I just don't understand how you can comment on the game if you didn't watch it.
Lee is no where close to the talent that Frye is...Not even close....

This is the problem with Knick fans, everyone sees talent and thats all they care about, what is talent, how does someone with talent who doesn't know how to use it properly win his team games? Frye can shoot the ball at a high clip but what else does he bring? No one is denying Fryes talent but right now Lee is a better fit becuase of what he brings to the team with his defense and rebounding. Channing brings nothing but shooting! Will he change that? Im sure he will but right now the Knicks are in this to win games not to start Frye just because he can shoot the ball!

Another thing. If Frye was not up for this game and did not have it circled on his summer calender then I'm really worried. You want your players to look forward to playing against other top talent at their position, especially Channing entering his 2nd year and ready to take on a larger role with his team. If Channing was not up for this game and his performance shows he might not have been, I'd be worried about his future as a defensive player and rebounder becuase that was the knock on him in college, that he was soft and was a shooter. So far, I'm not seeing anything other then that.

Fyre is coming off of a knee injury. He's more likely to get a small ankle injury like this because of it. He only started runing again a few weeks ago. This is all being blown way out of proportion.

And yes, I watched the game.

"talent" so overrated. Talent has us a 26 win team with stars like Marbury, Francis, Crawford, Curry and of course 4 more years of Jerome JAmes :)
"talent" dropped Gilbert Arenas to the 2nd round and Ben Wallace and Brad Miller out of the draft.

Watch a couple games and get back to me.

I'd make a Frye / James / Jalen Rose / Nate for Troy Murphy / Adonal Foyle / Mike Dunleavy trade in a nanno-second.

That's not me over-reacting to the sprained ankle.

Fish, I said the same exact thing about 2 hours ago in another thread in which I was debating with Holfresh. Talent is overated and some people are REALLY overating talent when they talk about this team.

Relax Hol. No one is saying that. But if you saw the game, Frye did fail the test against Amare bigtime.

I know its summer league, but I totally agree with you nyk. That's how I see it too. You gotta get geeked up to play against a guy like Amare. If not, there's something wrong there. Good call.

A couple points

  • Don't confuse talent with potential. No one should be saying Frye is all that talented just yet. They should be saying that they see a lot of potential in Channing Frye and are unwilling to give up on him.
  • You cannot compare Channing Frye to Amare Stoudemire. Amare is a beast in a league of his own. That would be like comparing Balkman to Artest. It isn't a fair comparison just yet. Maybe it never will be
  • Stop comparing Summer League to actuality. Travis Outlaw should be better than Lebron if Summer League was at all indicative of actuality. It is fun to see who is in shape and who isn't, how players mesh with each other, but individual performances mean nothing.

Frye is going to have a long career in the NBA as long as he stays healthy. And he will keep improving his game & his body. I don't know if he will ever be a star. But he is talented, works hard, has a team first, can knock down jumpshots, can run the floor, pretty athletic, and is a good finisher. Most young players need a 3 yr window. While we should be critical. We shouldn't be took critical especially at this point.

Who knows maybe he would have played way better in the 2nd half. But he got injured early so we would never know. Plus Amare was fouling the hell out of him. But I won't us that as an excuse. I say lets see where he is 30 games into the upcomming season. If he still looks that overmatched vs quality players then thats when the red flags should really start waving.

In todays NBA from a coaches stand point. You can't stop top bigs from scoring. All you can do is hope to match there production with your own bigs who can score, and stop the others.

Maybe Hol over reacted but this "BIG TEST" idea is an over-reaction too. Frye hadn't played in several months before this summer league. I remember people starting threads about him being a failure after 3 summer league games last year too. This gets old.

Frye may be out the rest of summer league
