July 3, 2006 -- The Knicks extended a $1 million qualifying offer yesterday to their free-agent 6-foot-10 center Jackie Butler, making him a restricted free agent. The Knicks can match any offer from another team.
Butler's agent, Keith Glass, son of Larry Brown's agent, said he's received interest from four teams. It's unclear how much Isiah Thomas is willing to match.

"I'm encouraged by the interest," Glass said.

Qyntel Woods is the Knicks' other free agent. If they re-sign both, the team would have 16 guaranteed contracts - one over the maximum. Butler is the higher priority. Thomas said he will not be aggressive in signing other free agents. He's "comfortable" with the roster and believes Larry Brown was at fault for a 23-59 record.

Meanwhile, Thomas conducted his first practice as Knicks coach - a nearly three-hour session in Las Vegas in preparation for the club's entry in the summer league that begins Friday.

Thomas will run most of the practices, but Mark Aguirre will run the bench for the five-game schedule that starts Friday vs. Cleveland. Saturday, the Knicks face the Phoenix "We Had No Interest In Renaldo Balkman" Suns. All games will be televised by MSG Network.

Thomas plans to be passive in signing other players during free agency.

is this a lowball offer, or a way for potential suitors to come out of the woodwork?

This looks like just a formality needed to keep the rights to match other offers, I don't think it means he's being lowballed.

It's a good start but I doubt Isiah will go higher. Remember Isiah found this guy out of nowhere so Isiah probably has an attituded that he can find someone else like Butler.

$1 million is a fair contract for Butler. Isiah is probably trying to see if he gets a higher offer. If he gets offered more than $2.5 million a year, that's seriously overpaying.

butler can get 3 years $10 mil in the open market. hollinger on ESPN was biggin' him up as a great bang for the buck free agent. that's on ESPN. if scalaweenie got 5 years $15 mil, then in this weak free agent class, he could get $10. there were times last year he looked like our best post guy.

Exactly. And he shouldn't go that much higher. And it looks like he already has found someone else. We brought in Kenny Adeleke and Marco Killingsworth for the summer league. Both will supply the same thing basically if we lose Jackie. Jackie's got some competition at that reserve bigman spot with those two.

I like Jackie a lot but for me the priority is bringing back Qyntel Woods. Zeke shouldn't look to jettison Q2 just because he was a Larry Brown guy. I mean they were comparing this guy to Tracy McGrady when he came out a few years ago for good reason. We all saw what this kid can do last season in spirts, whenever Larry decided to give him a run. He can get out and run, shoot it and has good rebounding ability. He fits Isiah's original vision of a "younger, more athletic" team perfectly. Look without his few character issues (marijuana, dog-fighting etc...) there's no way he even lands in or lap last year. I give Larry credit for spotting him, and I hated Larry with a passion last year btw! He's my man at the 3 spot and if we don't act quickly he'll get scooped up by another team. They gotta show him some love and at least start some dialogue with him and see exactly what he wants and where it goes. Jackie's a restricted FA, this kid's not.

I think I have to actually agree with you on this. $10 million might be a bit much, but Yeah, proabably can get much more than 1 million. He's big and managed to put up some decent numbers.
I have to think LB was playing this kid more because of his relationship with his agent.

The trick would be to try get Butler to resign low, with the idea that we can then get his bird rights and then make up for it on the next deal.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

who's minutes were Butler stealing? JJ's? I thought Butler earned his own minutes. He played and played well. Did he play and suck and we all notieced? Don't remember anyone mentioning this until the agent thing popped up in the articles.

This is ridiculous. Jackie earned his minutes and you could argue that he was the best 5man the Knicks had last year when you take into consideration ALL apects of the game. Isiah needs to resign Jackie becuase the Knicks have NO other backup Centers, JJ doesn't count since he SUCKS.

NYK and Martin

I can think of MANY games were Curry was playing well, picked up a couple of fouls and never returned to the game. I can think of MANY other games were for whatever reason, CURRY was miysteriously missing from the lineup. Sometimes in the 4th quarter of games he playe well in. I can't say JB got all of those minutes, but I saw more than enough suspicious benchings of Curry last year.

If you guys can't remember that I don't know what planet you are living on.

Whether or not JJ sucks, he's going to get some minutes, at least to start the season, because of the huge contract Isiah gave him. Expect to see JJ get another shot.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the summerleague roster. Isiah is already looking for a Jackie Butler replacement.
