Dolan: Hiring Brown was a mistake
BY GREG LOGAN
Newsday Staff Writer

June 26, 2006, 5:55 PM EDT

The way Knicks owner James Dolan sees it, Larry Brown's New York homecoming was nothing more than a get-rich-quick scheme.

Desperate to restore the credibility of his franchise, Dolan signed Brown to a five-year contract worth a record $50 million for a coach, but by the end of a 23-59 season, Dolan was convinced Brown planned to take the money and run.

"It's my contention Larry never intended to coach this team beyond this season," Dolan said Monday in a meeting with six Knicks beat writers and The Associated Press. Holding one hand about 18 inches above a conference table, Dolan added, "If there's any doubt about that, there's a stack of evidence that high."

Reviewing the decision he made to hire Brown at the behest of team president Isiah Thomas and Madison Square Garden sports operation head Steve Mills, Dolan admitted, "We made a mistake."

If anyone pays, it will be Thomas, who was ordered by Dolan to succeed Brown as coach and given an ultimatum to right the ship in one season or follow Brown out the door. "This is his team; he made this bed," Dolan said of Thomas, who is responsible for bringing in every player on the 15-man roster. "There's no one better than him to make this go forward. If I can say there has been significant progress after one year, he'll be here. If we can't say that, he will not be here."

Thomas and Mills both attended the meeting and spoke with reporters.

Dolan has refused to pay the remaining $40 million owed on Brown's contract. According to a clause in the deal, any dispute goes to arbitration by NBA commissioner David Stern, whose word is final, without other legal recourse. Dolan said Stern knew about the clause when the deal was signed last July.

Seems to me that Dolan is holding Isiah accountable. Isn't that a good thing?

can we assume that 20 & 29 will either be packed with a Francis type in a large trade, used and DNP-CD'ed, or used on players that will be abroad for a year or so?

i don't get what you guys want here... all the Isiah doubters have wanted him out for the longest time... what better way than to have him coach this team next season & either put up or shut up now that Dolan's given him this ultimatum? it seems if Isiah fails & is fired, some of you will still be complaining about the 1st rounder next season going to CHI... so what would you rather have happen?

A - Isiah fails & is fired after a horrible season as Knicks' head coach while CHI ends up w/another top lottery pick from NY

B - Isiah "suceeds" (gets this team into the playoffs) & Dolan feels vindicated for his decision to go w/Isiah, leading to the extension of Isiah's contract

Tick tick tick ...
Knicks owner gives Isiah one year to show progress

NEW YORK (AP) -- Isiah Thomas has one year to turn around the Knicks -- something Larry Brown couldn't do. And if Thomas doesn't, he'll be gone, too.

"I'm saying this right with Isiah here. This is his team," Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan said Monday. "He made this bed. There's nobody better than him to make this thing go forward.

"But he has to do that and he has one year, one season to do that," he said. "At this time next year Isiah will be with us if we can all sit here and say that this team has made significant progress towards its goal of eventually becoming an NBA championship team. If we can't say that, then Isiah will not be here."

The remarks by Dolan were his first since firing Brown last Thursday and replacing him with Thomas, the team president and general manager.

He acknowledged that the team "made a mistake" hiring Brown.

Thomas assembled the roster that went 23-59 to tie the franchise record for losses in a season. And though Dolan said the Knicks are still rebuilding, he wants to see results next season.

Right on! I think it's absolutely incredible that Isiah is being held accountable (as he should be). I backed his younger, more athletic vision but we've gotten mixed signals the way certian things have been handled.

Over the course of any multi-year tenure, I'm sure every GM makes a few bad moves to go with the good. But enough is enough, see your plan through and let it be successful or you're out! Bottom line

In all fairness, Isiah will have had what 3 years to make something happen? If we can't do anything but fire coaches, regress as a unit and add payroll then he's got to go.

I had a feeling Dolan's patience would eventually wear thin, but I didn't expect that kind of talk before the season started.

all the dolan doubters can now stay behind a rock where they belong. the fact that jim is giving ample notice before camp, preseason and the start of next season leave no excuse for failure.

and to all the doubters that thought dolan didnt know what time it was.

let's not make it sound as if this guy's ever had a clue as to how to run this team... the guy's the dumbest owner of any NY/NJ area sports franchise (not business wise, i'm talking strictly sports related issues - maybe the Islanders owner will give him a run for the money)

just because he's making the only ultimatum he can make in the current sorry situation he's helped to bring about doesn't mean he has a clue as to how to run this team going forward.
