In honor of 2006, who do you consider the top 6 centers of all time?

Mine...

Olajuwon
Duncan
Shaq
Chamberlin
Russell
Ewing

Robinson was a little soft for my liking, always seemed like a better complimentry player than centerpiece to me, even with his MVP and all-star appearences, I don't know why.

Shaq and Chamberlin would be lower if this was based on sheer talent because alot of their dominance is based on sheer size, IMO.

Russell could've been alot higher if he didn't play on a team with so many scorers. Other than Ewing and Mourning, Russell is one of my favorite centers.

Jabbar is probably seven because so much of his success was based on he sky hook. I don't know how versatile he was offensively, because I didn't see him play, but one move on the offensive end (if that is what he had-you guys who saw him play, spread the wealth of knowledge) is limiting.

Just my opinion, fire away.

From late '80s on,
Olajuwon
Shaq
Robinson
Duncan (barely ahead of Ewing)
Ewing
Mourning
Ben Wallace

Jabbar def. ahead of Ewing. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. Learn some history before posting nonsense.
fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

Before you take a friendly opinion thread and turn it to crap learn some manners...and perhaps the meaning of opinion.

Hakeem is the best center ever. That's my opinion.

After that I got Moses, shaq and ewing....like joe said this is because I never seen the other guys play.

Ben is not a center, Duncan is not a center.

Russell and chamberland are way before my time but their numbers tell it all.

I got to see a old jabbar play. I think when magic came aboard that's when he started breaking down. So I can't give jabbar his props but his numbers don't lie either.

All you old guys have seen a ton of great centers. Lanier, reed, I can't really think right now but there have been some great ones.

I wanna see what the old guys gotta say about this.

Duncan is so far ahead of Ewing it's not even funny, but Duncan is a PF.

Shaq / Hakeem could go either way, but definitely 1/2 in my book.

Moses # 3 (but I didn't see Jabbar in his prime).

I think Wilt was a great bully, but cowered at every big moment (that's more from what I've read that what I've seen, but I have read quite a bit on the subject).

This is an old debate here that I should probably just leave alone, but I can't resist. Give Ewing two olympian/all-star level teammates and remove Jordan. I bet he'd win a few rings like Duncan too.

For those of you who may never have seen Wilt play-there was naothing he could not do on a basketball court except shoot fould shots. Could average about 4-5 assists per game, 23 rebounds and 30 point a games -for his career (They did not keep stats on blocks) An incredible athlete who, legend says, set a record for the decathalon while a sophomore in college and he was not a track and field athlete but was challenged by the track coach). Was unstoppable. And for those who think it was pure size, he faced a few HOFers like Russell, Reed, Petit, Unseld, Lucas and Thurmond. Russell was great but was a piece of the puzzle-great defense, boards, good passer.

BTW-played 45+ minutes a game

Thing is, when he faced a lot of those HOFers he didn't always come out ahead. Not in the wins department.

good post. he led the f'g league in assists when he got to the lakers!

also led the leaguae in womens!

and could hit the foul shots when he needed them to reach 100!

but you're wrong about russell. he was a better basketball player than wilt. he was every bit the athlete wilt was - he was a major track star himself. and he was the hub of the celtic offense. everything ran through him in the high post. their friggin half-court offense looked like the globetrotters with russell playing meadowlark lemon. they'd go into him and everyone would run curls and he'd find the open man. russell was the ultimate clutch player - even more than mj. he always came up with the play that was needed for a win at the end of a big game. he was a total leader on the court and in the locker room. was a coach of an nba chanpionshiop team too. wilt on the other hand was a legendary knucklehead. dominated for 3 and 1/2 quarters and then almost always fell apart in the clutch. he lacked what it took to come up big when required. still my 2nd best all-time center, but sorry it's true.

To each there own, but I'd take Hakeem over Duncan every time. Over Shaq too.

Hakeem was a superb passer from the post, had unstoppable moves inside and out, was a great shot blocker and was a better defender than both of them. If you're judging Dream on his later years you're missing the incredible peak he had in his prime. He was so outstanding in his championship years.

I don't place a whole lot of significance on statistics but I will reference against my intuition from time to time and I just did so here. For a quick snapshot of production I chose to compare their Efficiency ratings over their careers. Here they are plotted out on a graph. Duncan is in lavender, Shaq red, Dream blue.

Neither of them matched Hakeem's peak and they both fell below him over the aggregates of their careers.

shaq is not better than hakeem and he will admit that.
