Knicks mgmt is saying its easier to fire Larry then overturn a portion of the roster to suit the coach's needs

is the problem really overturning it or is it the philosophy and asking price Isiah has set?

I look at Dallas and how they were able to shift gears as the coaching philosophy changed. They got rid of some big names through trade, not resigning and the Amnesty rule. The Nellie Nash-Finley-Dirk teams went as far as they could. Moving on into the future meant letting go and entrusting the organization to the new coach's vision. And as much as Cuban loves Dirk, he still got the order to STFU and play ball.

Nellie's roster (03-04):

Dirk Nowitzki
Michael Finley
Antawn Jamison
Steve Nash
Antoine Walker
Josh Howard
Marquis Daniels
Tony Delk
Danny Fortson
Shawn Bradley
Eduardo Najera
Scott Williams
Travis Best

Nellie/Avery's roster (04-05:

Dirk Nowitzki
Michael Finley
Jerry Stackhouse
Josh Howard
Jason Terry
Keith Van Horn
Erick Dampier (requested and fully endorsed by Avery)
Marquis Daniels
Devin Harris
Alan Henderson
Shawn Bradley
Darrell Armstrong
Didier Ilunga-Mbenga
Pavel Podkolzin

From 03-04 to 04-05 only 4 players returned. The Damp trade was one Avery wanted the organization to make. Jamison a 22 & 8 player and 6th man of the year that year was traded for rookie pg Devin Harris. Walker for Terry +. The team made moves to go to a more traditional approach because that was the style Avery was most comfortable coaching.

big contrast in philosophy when it comes to the Knicks:

Isiah has no wish to let contracts expire.

however the evolution of the rosterrequires such processes. AD and Penny would've freed up 2 roster spots. Suppose in camp there is a Marquis Daniels and a DJ Mbenga aka young harvestable talent. You let the cycle go as it should, such players are signable, instead NY enters the off-season with 11 players already under contract and will likely want to re-sign Butler and Woods.

Isiah doesn't want to come out seemingly on the bottom in the talent evaluation of the trade.

so we keep adding players who mirror each other. what sense did adding Taylor at the trade deadline make when Mike and Kurt were already here and Rose was traded for. How many pf's did we need at that time. Plus we gave up a pick. Last 4 years guys who can play have doppd into the 2nd round.

then there is Reezy and Penny for Steve. Talent wise NY wins in a landslide. However the other shoe failed to drop. What was the point in bringing in Steve if Steph wasnt being moved out? How many balls are there to play with. Francis wants the ball, Steph wants the ball, Crawford wants the ball, Jalen wouldn't mind the ball.

Again Wasteful thinking especially when team needs are looked at in depth. If there really was a need to make a trade, Ratliff would've been more logical. The cap is ****ed through the end of the decade so the argument about his 11 mill over the next 2 years is pointless. Ratliff provides a defensive presence in the lane. Ratliff is a good citizen. Perhaps an extranneous "talent" could've been dumped, especially if Isiah just asks for Ratliff instead of Ratliff and DMiles - as if yet one more selfish player who wants the ball was what the team needs.

the counter is a good coach adapts to the talent.

however when you look at the playoffs, of the teams remaining with coaches that have been there more than a year - Dallas SA Phx LAC - those rosters have all been remade to fit the coach.

Dallas and Phoenix transition happened virtually overnight. Dal and Phx had players in Dirk and Amare readily made to build around. While I don't see Frye as some superstar he does have an offensive skillset that you can weave with.

for starters...I would've stayed with a true post center who can face up or back someone down on O, and actually uses his body on D like Mike was instead of reaching for Ed who is really just a good finisher. Frye is 6' 11 as a help defender he can help make-up for Sweets lack of height until a taller player in that mold was available.

the stop underrating David Lee movement 1. FIRE MIKE 2. HIRE MULLIN 3. PAY AVERY 4. FREE NATE!!!

Good post. I think the Knicks are willing to make changes for Brown, and IMO and other accounts they have done so this season. The problem is that Brown wants total immediate changes. I understand he is 65 yrs old and doesn't have the mindset that complete changes may take more than one season. I think that's Dolan issue, it has to be give and take. You can't keep walking in to the offices of the GM and owner and making ultimatiums. I can only compare it to Riley, who knew his roster was flawed the first year (hated Mark Jackson) but capitalized on Jackson's strengths. Was able to make some of his changes the next season. And continued to do it.

great post. And lets not forget:
The Post reported Monday that Dolan's wishes to part ways with Brown stemmed from the owner's belief it would be more expensive to add to the player payroll, in an effort to satisfy Brown's trade demands, than buying out Brown's contract.

A source said yesterday that Thomas' and Dolan's belief in Stephon Marbury was also a major factor.

yup yup yup.

d'antoni, within 2 months on the job had steph + penny shipped out b/c they didn't fit his system. d'antoni was a rookie nba coach. yet the gm believed in him and gave him what he wanted. here? lb is senile and all he wants are old bastards. unreal.

IT would appear that Francis and Jailen were added long after any problems.

Larry asked for those two gone, along with Marbury, Mo. T and Jerome.

Why would larry ask for Francis and Rose and then weeks later ask them to be gone? WOuld appear they were not his requests.

So other than that, the flaws would have been just Marbs, Mo t, and jerome. Jerome was a disaster, Marbs was caustic, and Mo t is expriring malcontant anyway.

The rest of the team would be fine.

Isiah is the one scrambling to restore any cred. And this is the guy we keeping? Dolan is a true idiot!

getting someone who can run point 25 minutes a night never happened.

Both Lenny who used Frank a ton with Steph and Larry went into their first full seasons as coach without a point "they trusted" on the roster

I counted 6 players returning and they were all pretty much starters, brown wants our starters gone...doesn't really match up, but good post nonetheless.

also, didn't we turn the roster around the year before...if I'm not mistaken, only 1 starter returned to the roster that LB inheritted...It appears as though the knicks did hte exact same thing that the mavericks did, only the mavericks were a western conference finals team and the knicks were a lotto team.

Still not really seeing hte parallels, but again, good article...can you drum up something that involves a lottery team and new coach scenario?

what are you talking about, most of the moves were done prior to LB's hire. Isiah has been pursuing Curry forever.

Isiah hasalready publically stated most of these guys LB wouldn't have chose.

and to answer your narrow question Phoenix went from lottery to WCF's in 1 season. we don't have to be Phoenix, we can keep building like the Clippers

out: guys like Miles Q Odom Wilcox Dooling - all high picks, all high maintenance while Clippers
in : guys like Mobley Sam Ross Radmanovic Ewing Singleton Livingston - coachable medium to low maintenance players

I agree it's easy to turn over the roster, but the particular PLAYER Browns wants to move - namely Marbury - is next to impossible to move for anything resembling value. You'd be lucky to get an expiring deal for him.

Roster turnover is a stupid excuse - Brown was locked in a power struggle for roster CONTROL, disparaging players along the way and that's why he's going. Remember Dolan fired freaking Marv "voice of the Knicks" Albert for far less. I hate Dolan, but I'm not shedding any tears for Brown. He does this act everywhere he goes. AGAIN, ask a Detroit fan about Brown. Ask a Pacers fan about Brown. He did the same damn thing.

Nalod man, I don't know what to say. Brown told Marbury he final say on player personnel decisions, the hard juice card remember. Brown didn't deny it. Brown said he wanted Francis. Thomas agreed with him. Brown said he wanted Q Woods, Thomas said he didn't but he promised Brown to get the players he asked, so Q Woods was a KNick. Thomas loved Ariza, Brown didn't, he was thrown in a deal for no reason. Ariza said the trade was all Brown. Thomas threw TT in the Curry trade to get back AD, you really think that Thomas said that AD was a must. Thomas couldn't stand AD. IMO if Brown came up to you and said 'yeah it was me.' YOu still deny it and say no its not you its Isiah. BTW, Brown asking for players and then wanting to trade them is nothing new for Brown. He did it Detroit and Philly. King and Croce both called Brown a liar about his statement of not having a role in trades and player acquisition. King noted the only time he didn't get his way was with Iverson getting traded and when King vetoed re-signing Derrick Coleman.

But Brown has given Thomas and Knicks managment one off season to make his changes. I think he wasn't thinking right or taking his meds but that meeting is what is sticking in Dolan's mind too. His coach told him that he has to make those changes this off season or he may not come back.

Actually, Brown is NOTORIOUS for having love/hate relationships with players, coveting them when they are on other teams, hating them when they are up close and personal. Brown was psyched when Jalen showed up and dished out 11 assists in the Houston game. Brown seemed to be for adding Francis, I don't think they were expecting Francis to show up looking like a zombie (probably should've been). But Brown ALWAYS does. He went from loving to hating to trying to trade to loving Iverson and back again like thirty times in Philly. He also traded Mark Jackson away in Indy and then went out and begged Donnie Walsh to bring him back 6 months later.

Brown likened getting rid of a certain player to what Philly did with TO. If you can't trade him cut him.

IT's history here as GM alone says he totally balked at that notion.

Everything else likely fell apart from there

TO's contract was not guaranteed. Not only is Marbury's deal guaranteed, but we owe $80 million on it plus $80 million in luxury tax. Marbury's jersey is top ten in the league in sales, he was number three the previous two seasons. Isiah and Dolan have faith in Marbury, so they chose to buy out Brown at $40 million rather than Marbury at $160 million. You know Marbury will be here for 4 more years. Brown would be here two at best. We'll see if it was the right call, but I think a coach willing to adapt to today's game can do some interesting things with our roster.
