Newsday: Francis Deal Part Of KG Strategy?
23rd February, 2006 - 12:35 am
Greg Logan/Newsday - Executives and personnel experts around the league questioned the odd coupling of Stephon Marubry and Steve Francis, and said Larry Brown was not in favor and suggested yesterday's deal was part of a risky long-term strategy by Isiah Thomas to trade for superstar Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett this summer.

One NBA general manager said Thomas sold Knicks owner James Dolan on a strategy to stockpile as many marketable assets as possible to make a play for Garnett, who has grown increasingly restless with the Timberwolves, who now might be ready to consider trading him.

Brown is said to have favored trading Hardaway's contract to Portland for center Theo Ratliff and small forward Darius Miles to fill the Knicks' need for more defense, rebounding and shot-blocking. But Thomas gambled on Francis, a strategy that could blow up in his face if Minnesota refuses to trade Garnett.

"Isiah has put a lot of talented players on their roster, but it remains to be seen if they fit together," the NBA GM said. "Chemistry is important. The Knicks have a lot of firepower, but Larry likes to play defense. Francis doesn't seem like his type. Larry wants hard-nosed players."

Isiah Thomas will lead us back to the playoffs in 2006 !!!

It sounds like media nonsense. If the T-Wolves want to get rid of KG and rebuild, they're not gonna do it with Francis. They'll want an expiring contract and cheap, underpaid, good young players, and draft picks.

Losing KG for expiring contracts does not give them anyting but the ability TRY to get free agents.

They need Frye, picks, and salary. They need somthing to sell to the fans. Francis can be part of a three way.

This keeps fans here intrested and he keeps his job.

Who the hell knows anything anymore.

Maybe Wolves and knicks are working on this and it either gets done now or in June.

Pipe dream. Garnett will never be traded to NY. And if he is, he will be out of his prime in 3 years. Very risky.

Garnett to the Bulls for Deng, Gordon and the Knicks number one with some fillers like Sweetney makes a lot more sense than anything we can give them

the only way KG's going to be traded is if KG asks to be traded... the whole premise behind the gamble is that KG will want to be traded to NY to be reunited w/Marbs & play in a big market... the Bulls have no chance of getting KG imho... why would he want to go there? to play alongside who? Luol Deng? Kirk Hinrich? no way.

Garnett can force a trade but I doubt he can pickt he precise team he's traded to. Mchale would have to be the dumbest person alive to give that much power to a player he was *planning to trade.*

what are u talking about? KG's shown loyalty to the owner of the TWolves & they share a great relationship, & it's the OWNER of the franchise that will make the decision on whether or not to trade KG, not Kevin McHale... if KG asks to be traded, i'm sure he'll have a select few teams that he'll name, & my guess is the Knicks will probably be 1 of them... the Lakers likely being the other.

Actually, isn't Garnett from South Carolina? I think he just transfered to that school in Chicago for more exposure.

A select few is another story. But I don't think Francis helps us to beat out those other select few. Not when he's owed $48 mil. I'd rather keep an unhappy Garnett for $60 mil than have Francis for $48 mil. I'd actually rather have Rose's expiring contract as part of a package that included picks and young players than have that same package with Francis instead of Rose if I were rebuilding the Wolves.

but minny would most likely want to unload all longterm contracts(hassel, hudson, jaric, blount). a deal of francis-moT-jalen+draft picks+young player could do that. i dont know how thrilled i'd be to make that kind of deal. we would be giving up a lot of assets for 1 guy and a ton of bad contracts.
