OK, Amare Stoudemire has missed the entire season. The Pheonix Suns have ten new players including their starting C KT who was run out of NY. They have also had several line ups and smaller injuries. What is their excuse for winning? They lost a player who is a first team all NBA player on the same level oR BETTER than ANY NBA player at the end of last year for EVERY game.
We lost Patrick Ewing for 50+ games in 1997 and had various other injuries to many players--why did we end up with a winning record? Are you saying that Marbury's boo boo for 20 games of which he has missed 5-6 is the direct cause of this season. Every year most teams have injuries.
okay, I'm going to bang my head against the wall one last time here: the Suns have the exact same system as last year, they still have the MVP running the show at PG, they still have on of the best forwards in the NBA in Shawn Marion. They were a 60 win team with Amare, probably a 50 win team without him, but I submit to you that that offense revolves around Nash and what he does at the point. Without Nash last season they went 0-7. If Nash missed the whole year that team might not make the playoffs.
Similarly, the offense in NY revolves around Marbury. We do not have a replacement. With him not playing we 0-8 and he played in 5 games at 50% and we went 1-4. This team, as constructed NEEDs him. The Suns do not have as many new players as the Knicks, sure they've done a good job of replacing QRich and JJohnson. But, again, the biggest difference between the two teams is: Suns have been running the same exact sets since at least the beginning of LAST season, meanwhile the Knicks have a new coach and a new system. Actually I'm not even sure if Brown has settled on a system yet. Has he? It took him for us to get in a 7-21 hole before he realized it might help if Marbury was allowed to score and run pick and rolls.
The situations are completely different. I'm not saying the Suns haven't done a hell of a job, but Nash is the most important player to that team's offense and they've had the same coach/philosophy/offensive sets for a long time now. The Knicks have none of those luxuries.
edit: I'm not saying overall talent-wise the Knicks are remotely in the same boat as the Suns. The Suns have 3 top 20 players and if they're all healthy for 82 games, their ceiling is 65wins. Our ceiling if everything is clicking is maybe 45 wins. But I do believe that ceiling can rise based on improvement in Frye, Lee, Curry, Jamal. I just don't think LB's system is helping them improve
