well, if he plays like he is and he brings a Denver pick it should help the team. what else can they do? Jalen has been playing much much better-near all star level his last 9-10 games and if we add in a pick we will improve. Its not the defensive type of improvement youd like to see--what we ned, but a true 3 with length and his vet ways will help this club as marbury and avis come back IF it actually happens.

I'd do it. The Denver pick can be packaged with the SA pick to move up in the draft. We maybe able to grab someone like Shelden Williams. He'd be a great addition that fills a need for a defensive/rebounding PF. Rose, if he can continue to play at his current level, would be a valuable addition.

I had higher hopes for the expiring contracts but this is by no means bad since we get the better player and get a potential lottery pick.

Unlikely Babcock isn't giving up the Denver pick. Isiah may get a 2nd rounder.

This move would put them about ten mil under instead of 6 mil over the salary cap. They must realize that they can turn their team around better with a near max contract FA than with a pick from Denver at around 16 to 22.

January 22, 2006 -- HOOP DU JOUR
TRADE WINDS SWIRL ABOUT ROSE, ARTEST
COULD the Knicks really be (finally!) virtually ze roed in on acquiring Jalen Rose? Despite long-term contention over Isiah Thomas' demand for a No. 1 pick (Denver's) from Toronto in a proposed deal involving Penny Hardaway, that's what I'm hearing from a reliable source.
It's unclear which team is willing to compromise, probably both, meaning the pick figures to be lottery-protected, maybe through as low as eight, something along those coordinates.

Oddly enough, the apparent Rose ($15.6M and $16.9M) breakthrough coincides with a turnaround in trade talk with the Blazers. Sources on both coasts reveal Portland, in the midst of a four-game win streak, abruptly reversed its position to cling to Theo Ratliff because Joel Przybilla is a rising free agent, and offered Larry Brown the defensive inside presence he's been seeking since the season began.

Adding irony to irony, New York declined Ratliff ($11.67M with two more at the same number) and Ruben Patterson ($6.35M and $6.8M) for Penny ($15.7M).

Who says money ain't a thing to Camp Cablevision?

Penny hasn't been this unpopular since Tara Banks dumped him in a shoe commercial. The demand for him not to be part of any team is reaching epic proportion.

I think Denver is likely to make the playoffs and this pick will be around 19. I'd still do the deal. We'd have Jalen's expiring contract next year (which should yield a better player than our current exp. contracts b/c Jalen's a better player than they are) and we would have two 1st rd picks to try to get players to build with. I wouldn't plan to keep Jalen long-term unless he changes his game under Larry, though.

When has Toronto been a desired FA destination. Who wants to play for Sam Mitchell?

Toronto's best bet is to use the draft.

Rose actually played very well last year (albeit on a bad team). I don't know what happened in Nov and Dec but he looks like he's returned to form, averaging 18 PPG, 3 APG this month. His last 4 games are 24.5 PPG and 4.5 APG. Obviously he won't keep those #s up, but he is light years ahead of any SF we have now

Well Toronto hasn't had cap space in a long time; so it's hard to answer that question. In baseball, they got a lot of good players this offseason, though. At least in baseball, players aren't running away from the city. Maybe a young guard would find appealing the idea of playing with Bosh (and CV).

I'll believe it that Rose is going to be a Knick when I see it. There have been Rose to the Knicks trade rumors every trading deadline and offseason for the last 3 years.

Seriously, if we traded for the draft pick, it would be an admission that this draft was/is good and that IT made a DUMB move to give up the (lotto) pick for this year. And the move would take away David Lee's playing time and development and suck @$$ for David Lee, Trevor Ariza AND Q2. Furthermore, payroll will continue to increase out of control.

Additionally, Jalen's defense SUCKS, and perimeter defense is what we most need to improve. Unless we are trading Marbury for Jalen + 2 first rounders (Denver's this year and Tor's unprotected next year) in a salary dump / rebuild, leave this deal alone.

Don't understand what your saying about the draft. The draft at the top this year isnt that strong BUT there are some pretty good role players that are going to be picked in the 23-30 range that could help the Knicks out. The Nuggets pick is not going to be a high lotto pick so I don't know where your thinking is coming from.

caseloads: Since these guys can't play defense at least we can get a guy who has a killer mentality. rose on offense has that mentality to bury opponents. Forget getting a defensive wing, there is none out there available, Artest? forget it! But getting the pick does not mean that IT feels he made a mistake, he still feels that it was not worth passing on the deal to get curry to keep a lottery pick, I agree, how can you compare the two situations? anyway getting the pick just gives him some pieces to work with to package for another player or move up, but hey that means we can have our cake and eat it too, we get curry and a chance to move up still, how is that bad?
Anyone who sits around and waits for the lottery to better themselves, either in real life or in sports, Is a Loser............... TKF

The draft is not that strong, but I'm confident that Zeke will make good of the picks if he does acquire the Nuggets pick from Toronto. That's his strongest point his whole GM career is the draft.

It's never bad to add picks, but seriously, i don't think he had to give up this year plus next year's draft picks - or unprotect them. At lease protect them if you get the #1 pick in the draft. Anyway... seriously, the biggest problem is burying David Lee, Q2, etc. But I guess Penny is giving the Knicks nothing, and Jalen is something, but it means sending someone to the bench. I'd like to see:

PG - marbury
SG - Jalen
SF - Lee
PF - Davis
C - Curry

If we get a first round pick, this trade is a no brainer.

This team needs some veteran leadership and Jalen is a decent option. I think his personality is a good fit for Marbury. He's not gonna help much on D, but he will help on offense and he will help settle down some of the kids. I'm tired of watching Qyntel Woods.
