Confirmed reports from Star Ledger and Newsday has mentioned that Layden and Doleac's agent could possibly hammer out a deal within next few days. I personally like this deal because knicks don't necessarily have to use the whole 4.7m exception on him. He comes cheap and i'm one that just not too fond on Keon Clark whose really a forward. Clark has been known for leaving practices early and sometimes doesn't give 100% effort during games. Doleac is a 6'11 262pds lethal 15 foot jump shooter who definitely will force his opponents outside. He's a fundatmentally sound ballplayer that puts in the extra effort on the floor day in, day out. I think he'll be a great addition for the knicks considering whats out there on the mkt. The only legit center out there is Olowakandi who the clippers would never in their mind do a sign-n-trade with the knicks. Currently, layden has learn his lesson giving balloon contracts to mediocre players. Signing Doleac for half the exception would be a smart move on Layden's part. With this move, Layden patiently will seek probably another big body through a trade. All knicks fans need to do is wait and see. When th right time comes, thats when he'll take advantage of it. Discuss please!!

I totally agree. Getting Doleac makes KT obsolete. They have similar games. You can see Kurt packaged with Spree in a trade.

Kurt has to stay with this team. If you take him away who comes off of the bench up front?

I would actually think that the Knicks would keep KT, start him and have Doleac come off the bench....unless the team goes no where during the first part of the season....and then it's trade city.

If Kurt is traded we still have Othella and Spoon off the bench. Not great, but not too bad.

Apparently Layden doesn't see Keon Clark being able to start over KT, so Doleac is actually a better player to sign being able to accept a reserve role, being a good fundamental center, having good center size, and being able to improve the team's chemistry. That doesn't count the fact that Doleac will cost only half what Clark will. I'm glad Layden has thought this one out because it might turn out to benefit us. Maybe Doleac will even become this year's Todd MacCulloch.

I hope this doesn't happen Doleac is a terrible player who only average 4.6 point and 4 rebounds in 16 per game. He was on Cleveland folks, he couldn't get good numbers there what makes you think he will get good numbers in NY. This guy is a super scrub and isn't the answer to the Knicks need. He isn't even a shot blocker.

He is the samething as Knight why not just start Knight instead of wasting money and make a move just to make a move. Instead of signing a good decent big man they have been sign sorry player from cleveland, the last one was a bust Spoon and the Knicks are stuck with him because nobody wants to take on a washed up undersized PF who makes 4+ million. Say no to Doleac.

Doleac does play a similar game to Knight, but is many times better at every aspect of their games. Doleac is good fundamentally and a smart player. He has a high bball IQ and part of the reason i think he isn't a great shot-blocker is because he doesn't gamble much on defense and instead plays good token D where he doesn't let his man get by him and he makes him take hard shots and boxes him out well, instead of trying to block everything and trying to grab the board instead of boxing out. There are few players like this around anymore. No he's not an incredably gifted athlete, but a player like him can do wonders for your team chemisty. I say we nab him before anyone else gets the same idea.

Does anyone have a feel for what type of low post defender Doleac is?

I don't understand you might as well start KT if the center isn't going to shot block. The Knicks need intimidating height to keep opponents out of the lane. Doleac won't provide that. The Knicks would be better to take Keon atleast he will alter the thinking by opponents to go to the basket. Thats where half the battle is in the NBA to keep people out of the lane. Nobody wants to challenge Shaq, and before Shaq no one wanted to challenge Robinson and Duncan, Hakeem, Ewing, Mutombo. These guy blocked shot and altered shot just by their presence. We have an idea of how the Knicks should look and believe it or not a shot blocking center is the ideal player for the Knicks. Its the perfect compliment to the big three H20, Spree and Dice. James would have been perfect for them. Now that he is gone back to seattle I have to say that Clark fits better for the Knicks then Doleac. Keon averaged 1.9 blocks last season in limited playing time, if he start he may average anywhere from 2.5 to 3 blocks a game and if he does that his presence will alter shots too.

From what i hear he is a very good post defender because of his size and strength. He's not a freak athlete, but he moves well in the paint and can guard players his size with ease. Hopefully he can be a Weatherspoon-like defender with more size.

I’m on the fence about Doleac. I’ve liked him since college but his main strength (his 15 foot J) is also his main weakness. Because his offense takes place so far away from the basket he’s never in a position to get offensive rebounds (ala Kurt Thomas). The comparisons to Knight are absurd. He’s much, much, better than Knight. I’m also not worried about his lack of shot blocking. Shot blocking is overrated. The best shot blockers only block 2-3 per game. Ewing, Shaq, Dream, Duncan, D-Rob, they make opponents think twice about coming into the lane, because they set up shop there, and stay there. Doleac roams too much to help us in that area. Whoever we get has to be an improvement over last year. Simple put, he has to give us significantly more production that Kurt Thomas. Period. We need a rebounder more than a shot blocker. Also Kurt Thomas can not start at Center again. If we get Doleac, he needs to start. Dice, Spree, and AH need a traditional center. Enough of this PF crap.

I would consider Thomas as much a center as Ben Wallace, Antonio Davis, etc...He can play the position because he has good strength, makes good decisions, and is a good post defender. As long as we have a true center backing him up that will allow him to switch to PF every once in awhile, he will be just fine. Doleac is just the type of player we need coming off the bench for KT.

FYI Kurt is is terrible defender. He still hasn't learned to defend without fouling. He's OK againt the guys you mentioned but he gets killed by traditional centers. If we have a true center, why wouldn't he start? We need to get two centers. I think that's why layden didn't go after James. We need to split our money between two centers. No one has every one an NBA campionship with a PF at center. and isn't that what's it's all about? Going all the way?

You have you put a championship team together piece by piece. This year we did a lot to improve. Next year hopefully Layden will add more. I think he's now starting to realize what he needs to do to get the job done. He can't sign Anderson, Eisley, and Spoon to huge deals and expect them to make their money. He needs to sign role players to support Dyess, Spree, and Houston for cheap and let them gel into the system. Next year he could add that center to replace KT, but for now we can't be disappointed with the offseason aquisitions of McDyess, Williams, and hopefully Doleac for Camby, Jackson, and our pick.

Terrible defender? You gotta catch any of the games in the second half of the season. Kurt did foul a lot during the first half of the season, but the guy did hold his own against centers in the second half.

And what do you mean by traditional centers? Who are they? Shaq, Robinson, Candi? Anyone else?

Thomas is a good post defender.

Tthey are not the same. What at are you talking about??? Very poor analysis!! Knight weighs like 220 but Doleac is 262pds. Knight can't even execute a pick -n-roll but doleac has been doing it since the days at University of utah. At least Doleac makes consistent jump shots. Knight only gets himself in foul woes. He tends to get 4 fouls within minutes. I prefer Doleac over Knight any day based on his fundamentals.

My point is that the Knicks are stuck with a player that make 4 mill a year why add a player like Doleac he is just a 4 point 4 rebounds player that plays on the perimeter. I'm not going to go crazy. Besides there aren't any good centers out there in the NBA that are available they want Doleac then take him he isn't any better than what is out there anyway.

I do think the Knicks should concentrate on getting a high quality PG. That can lead the team not rely on old Charlie and backup Eisley and Rookie Williams. I would love for the Knicks just get a filler player at center and get NVE. That would give the Knicks four scoring options on the floor. NVE is good for 8 assists a game too. The KNicks need to get busy more with the point than with the center position because you can pretty much put any 6'11-7' space eater all he has to do is take up space, rebound and set picks and try to play decent defense.

Bottom line is the Knicks need size. Doleac will help in this category as would Mark Blount and Chris Gatling. I would love to get two of the three.

For some reason I thought Doleac was skinny and older...but hes a big guy and hes only 25! If we can get him cheap then we should definitely go for it.

I agree that the knicks should be concentrating on a legit PG but who?? If the knicks wanna do it then it's on the table for them regarding Nick V. exel. Just know giving up ward and kurt t. is dangerous for the knicks cause they'll be even smaller. If they want to do that trade, they first must acquire two big guys where Kurt t. is expendable. FOr now, Layden is waiting for the opportunity to present itself.
