Family troubles are keeping Davis in Chicago

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Antonio Davis, the 37-year-old power forward acquired by the Knicks in the Eddy Curry trade, remained in Chicago yesterday to be with his wife while her mother underwent surgery.

Although Davis previously played for Knicks coach Larry Brown and has a good relationship with him, he is reluctant to uproot his family and switch teams.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas on Friday said he is sensitive to Davis' immediate family issues, but he expects him to report to training camp in the next day or two.

Davis is in the final year of a contract worth $13.9 million, and Thomas doesn't sound inclined to release him and pay off the deal at full value. Davis has suggested he might retire, but it would be difficult to walk away from so much money.

"We hope he changes his mind [about playing for the Knicks], but we are sensitive to the way he feels," Thomas said. "We understand the moving process and will give him all the time he needs.

But at the end of the day, he's a New York Knick, and we will try and welcome him as an integral part of the team."

Curry not quite in shape

Curry missed the first hour of practice yesterday while an NBA cardiologist reviewed the Knicks' medical findings. When clearance came, he jumped into the middle of a full-speed scrimmage, and it was obvious he's not in great shape just yet. On the other hand, the Knicks will be dunking a lot more when the 6-11 low-post player is on the floor. "I'm thrilled he's with us," Brown said. "We're very fortunate to have a player like him with his upside. He's not in the shape he's going to be, but he's as gifted as any big kid I've seen."Curry will wear No. 32



Injury report

Forward Maurice Taylor (strained right Achilles) did not practice along with Stephon Marbury, Quentin Richardson and Jerome James, all of whom have strained left hamstrings.

I wonder if Curry's gonna play in the preseason game in 7 days.

He's gonna wear Jerry Lucas's number!

James - I thought he was 32, not Curry

It's cool that 32 is also just one away from 33.

I didn't think left hamstring pulls were contagious, but it must be!
