Blatche shot in apparent robbery attemptAssociated Press

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Andray Blatche, drafted by the Washington Wizards in June, was shot Sunday morning in Virginia during an apparent robbery.

Blatche, 19, of Syracuse, was shot once in the chest while riding in a car near his home in Alexandria, Va., his mother, Angela Oliver, told The Post-Standard of Syracuse. Alexandria police did not immediately identify Blatche, citing a policy of not releasing a victim's name while the assailants remained at large, said spokeswoman Amy Bersch.

He was listed in serious but stable condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va.. His mother said the bullet didn't hit any vital organs.

Police said the victim was shot about 6:30 a.m. after two men in masks approached from a van that had been following the car in which Blatche was a passenger.

Blatche attended Henninger High School in Syracuse. He signed a two-year contract with the Wizards last month after being drafted in the second round.

I hate to hear that, hope he is ok, I can see why sometimes these guys are flanked by a large posse most of the times, you have some real fools out there with the sole intention of doing harm. Sorry bastards!!

I liked him a lot. I know a few of you remember me being very high on him. I would have liked to sign him to a Lampe deal (3 years $2.4ish) and just had him play in the NBDL for a year or two and bring him up as a rookie in that 2nd or 3rd year.

I'm cool with Lee but I liked what I saw from Blatche

that was me who said "i'm glad we didn't draft him" - if I didnt say it, someone would have, and definitely others were thinking that.

let me stand by my comments. I hope that I am not what is wrong with America.
I hope that if I am what is wrong with America, I hope that a lot more "wrong" can happen in this country.

I didnt shoot the guy. Whoever did, that's what's wrong with America. The shooters. The gangs. The carjackers. To every story there are 3 sides. The victim. The agressor. The truth. We dont know what happenned. Maybe Andray did something that ticked the shooter off. We'll never know. All we know is he has a bullet in his chest. Good thing it's only one bullet. Supposedly the bullet didn't hit any "vital organs" - i'm assuming it his his lung. Which I thought our lung is a vital organ, but what do I know? I'm sure he's probably on a ventilator somewhere (and by somewhere, I mean an ICU - intensive care unit, since he is "stable, but critical" - and who knows exactly what that means - all i know is critical is not good... stable just means he's not getting worse).

So YES, i'm glad one of our draft picks didnt get shot. I hope no one gets shot.

I wish Andray the best. This could have happenned to anyone unfortunately. We've got to keep our wits about us.

I'm sorry he was driving around and got shot. I live near Alexandria VA (it's about 15 - 20 minutes away max). I've been out there. Seems like it should be decent and safe. Was this a targeted shooting? Was it accidental (i.e. did they know or not know who Andray B was)? Makes me happy I only drive a Camry and not some souped up whip. Was Andray dripping in Ice? He supposedly was the passenger. Was he in a whip sitting on 24s? If they saw a van tailing them, why pull over? I'd get on the Highway/ Beltway and speed as fast as I can and hope the cops show themselves (there are tons out here in DC area, especially looking to give tickets). Did anyone have a cell in the car? Why not call 911? Hmm.

Hope he recovers quickly and never ends up in the same situation ever again. Sorry if I offended anyone. that was not my intention.

Case,

I guess in that one line your statement came across wrong. I can see it, but I think most around here don't jump too quick as some of us have build up some cred and we don't jump to conclusions.

I too thought it weird they just pulled over after being followed, and then jumped by guys with masks? The story just makes no sense, and it just may be a coverup. Maybe they were doing somthing stupid and it just got way way out of hand? I hate the kid got shot, and nobody deserves it unless they got shot in self defense (they victomizing someone). This was a very quiet summer in terms of knuckle heads getting arrested compared to previous years. I hope prevention is prevailing and these guys realize not everybody loves them!

yeah man. thanks. i'm definitely a compassionate person. all i meant was that i'm glad our draft pick wasnt shot. our whole season and beyond could be tossed if Nate Rob or Frye got shot in the chest. And yeah, basketball becomes unimportant when someone's life is on the line. But seriously - we come here for hoops. We love the knicks. If I want to save a life, I throw on that white coat and start working with patients. In my down time, I root for the Knicks. And I'm happy our guys are OK. Kind of like when Steph was holding his kids and talking about the Katrina victims that were kids. I'm just saying i'm glad it wasnt one of our guys that got leaded up.

I hope Blatche pulls through, seriously. DC probably has some of the best ICUs in the country second to LA due to all the gang shootings out here.

Yeah, there's no way they just "pulled over" after being followed by a van. Blatche is from the hood. I'm assuming his boys are too. I'd assume they'd know better. We totally dont know what happenned. Of course no one deserves to be shot. It's insane out there. Makes you want to not go out and stay in all the time... Seriously, DC is rugged. Andray or his posse probably got into some BS at a club the night before - they were driving home at 6:30 AM on Sunday. I know from personal experience, you DO NOT mess around at clubs in DC.

I was thinking the same thing, Nalod. Oh yeah, that line goes:
"make me wanna holler, And throw up both my hands".

Definitely the Inner City Blues...

A lot of kids need to be in school a LOT longer than they presently are. Starting from age 6 they need to go to school 6 days a week 1/2 day on sat and 5 pm instead of 2:30 during the week. If kids stayed in school longer had mandatory 2 hour homework sessions -or you could play a sport/extracurricular activity and had to make the homework time up at home at night,it would benefit a lot of kids/families/communities. With a much higher emphasis on education and discipline, there will be more opportunities for kids to grow up and have much better life options. Someone has to step up and put much more money into education. The problem is they dont give a sht.

not just hours though. you gotta show kids that schoolwork actually leads to income, opportunities, prestige, etc. if you just extend hours it's like keeping kids in jail, they're gonna wanna split that much worse.

let them have on-the-job internships too, real early. give them exposure, hook them up with mentors. there's got to be a lot more integration of school with life success, control, pride, etc. all kids naturally have a more immediate gratification frame of mind.

Case, no offense to you. I can't judge you as a person. I'm the last person in the world to judge someone as a person.

I'm sure alot of posters were thinking the same. Basketball has to take a step down when you're laying in the hospital with a bullet in your chest.

i didn't think the story sounded right either. Who pulls over when they are being followed by masked men?

glad we didnt draft him!

That's probably one of those things that you shouldn't say, just because it doesn't need to be said.

But I read your later explanation and understand your point.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
