NYers Working To Help Hurricane Katrina Victims

(AP) NEW YORK New Yorkers are pitching in to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The National Basketball Players’ Association says it will announce Operation Rebound in Manhattan tomorrow. The operation will support the Katrina relief efforts. Ball players including Stephon Marbury and Allan Houston of the New York Knicks will mobilize an effort to deliver food, water and supplies to the victims.

Local elected officials are asking residents to help out.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz says he’d like to see every Brooklyn organization raising funds for the relief effort.

And Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi says he’s asking county residents and employees to donate to efforts to fix the Gulf Coast devastation.

Somewhere, one of them will have something negative to say about him and how he is motivated by selfishness to donate money. Or maybe not.

the knicks need to get steph a good pr person. they need to show a side of him that nobody sees. he's always jokin' around with teammates on the court before the game starts, he does ALOT of charitable stuff - show that and flood the market with it. all over nbatv - inside stuff, etc. everytime we see him it's like he's on trial.

Remember when steph said we could never win a championship with ward and Childs in the backcourt? He was a net!

Now some blindly follow him like some cartoon charactor and say what a bad rap he got?

Im sure Steph has matured quite a bit and if anything life has given him some humble pie.

He need just win a bit, and show more humility.

In time, he can be loved!

he (marbury) is talking a lot about how much he values his kids in this tragedy. He really wants to stress it is not about the money, it is all about saving families. Marbury might donate up to 1 millions dollars. No one better bash marbury for a while, he just cried his heart out for the families of new orleans.

Like many here, I've thought that he's the kind of player who's image wasn't reflecting the person that he truly is. His work to help victims in New Orleans should help him with this.

When your body is covered with tattoos or when you can't sport a nice hair due, you are a straight target to criticism. These people are not taken serious in this society. That is why we need to stress to our youth to learn to comply with society's demand. Braids and tattoos are not acceptable in our society. Carmelo, Sheed, AI, Marb and many others will always be scrutinized by the media….

WTF?

I wrote a few days ago that these guys, along with many top hip-hop get much publicity catering to the young urban kid whom will be fed much glamor coverage dipicting these guys as bling loving dudes lavishing themeslves with all kinds of luxury.

Fact is, they work their asses off to reach the top of their profession and that hard work does not make good television! Kobe reached his celeberty status by working very hard, not being accused of rape. AI was a hell of a basketball player before he ever was a tatood celeberty!

Its two fold also, while "WHITE" america has a hard time accepting the look, the "Black" america endorsements of these stars even furthering the image and glamorizing it without glamarizing the substance behind it.

Same thing in many other areasa of society so its not uncomon. THe Skater punk dudes look like their favorite rock and skater stars also.

In the 1980s, poser stock brokers just thought if they slick their hair back and act arrogant they can be Gorden Gekko!

But today we are talking about Didos comments. If Im gonna see nothing but dumb Crib shows about some young rap one hit wonder living with 5 of his posse and blowing his cash without showing the pressure of how he made it to the top, and how hard it is to stay their, then what are we to think? I turn on the BET and see videos some are very cool, and some are just blatent displays of gaudy behavior to mask the fact the artist has little talent.

As I said, this has been true for years. If the mainstream accepts braids and tats, then the alternative arena moves in another direction! Young people will always want to NOT LOOK MAINSTREAM!
