James. He's about ten years younger. If they were the same age, it would be beyond obvious that Mutombo would be the better choice, but it's been about five years since Mutombo had a stretch as good as James had a few months ago.

Mutombo makes sense with the Rockets, since they're in win-now mode. I don't think we'll realistically have a shot at the title within the next two years, so there's no point of pining for another Mutombo rental. We already had the guy and he was too old then to suit the team's future needs. The same is still true today.

Ditto for Dale Davis. James is obviously not an ideal signing, but he still probably has a lot more gas left in the tank than those other guys. We overpaid for James, but pretty much all centers are overpaid. In any case, we'll have a much better sense of how to evaluate James once we actually see how he fits into Larry Brown's system. Over the past few years Brown has had elite shot blockers to help anchor the team D-- Ratliff, Mutombo, and Wallace-- and James, while not in that very upper echelon of shotblockers, is a good one who should play an important role in the team defense.

Mutumbo is 53 years old. He can't play starters minutes.

James is 29, and if he can play more. IF, he stays out of foul trouble.

And, I wonder if he has the strenght and stamina to play 30 min a game?

Mutumbo is cool, and in a back up role is excellent. Like 10 min a game backing Yao.

24 mpg from James and 24 from Frye should be fine.

Ditto.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Yeah, but at least we wait it out for something BETTER to come along, like in next years draft or for a real good trade to occur. And if that happened, we'd have a #1 pick for sure which would be a GOOD thing. And Bruno and Butler would be getting time if we didn't have James. No matter how you look at it, James = BAAAAAAAAD signing. Mutombo was a nice precense in the playoffs, but he can barely run. And don't give me that "Oh he had a nice stretch of 5 games in the playoffs last year" arguement, b/c it was against a frontcourt just as bad as the Knicks.

Exactly... sometimes just waiting for better is the best. Since we are NOT in win now mode why make a bad signing when a cheaper stop gap player like Deke or Dale Davis would put us in better position in a year or two.

and to top it off, i still get the feeling that james is the stop gap anyway. do you guys think he's going to be the starting center on this team in 2 years or would you rather see frye out there starting?

I don't think anyone even knows b/c we don't really know who Larry Brown will really like. I think James will start the season off in the SL but how long that lasts is everyones guess. Who knows, maybe BUTLER is the starter (I doubt it) but who knows?

exactly and that is why we need James. We were one of those teams. Lets face it not every team has a duncan, shaq, or Garnett on the front line, but you need a serviceable big so average players like James, Pryzbilla and Gadzurich don't abuse you. Now the knicks can at least put out a big that will not let us get killed vs other average bigs simply because we didn't have anyone serviceable over 7'0.. and what I man by serviceable is someone who can play 25+ minutes. Mutombo is not serviceable for more than 10 min, DAle davis is not serviceable for more than 20 min, and the same goes for a lot of other guys, especially aging bigs. James is 29, so I can deal with it....

exactly. this is why IT took James. You can ALWAYS trade a 7'1" center making the MLE. Look at what happenned with Nazr. Two first round picks (plus rose, who is decent with a bad salary, but who cares what his salary is if we are not ever going under the cap anyway)?

James has never averaged close to 25+ minutes in his entire career. What makes you think he'll do it this year. He's hardly servicable, and what makes you wanna settle for serviceable in the first place? So we can be mediocre? In this league, the way to be is either you suck completely or you're a good team. This isn't a very good team THIS YEAR. 40-45 wins at most, which isn't anything to go hooray about.

larry brown got to the finals with AI and garbage. just AI. Yes, Shaq wasnt in the conference. The Pacers and Pistons were not around, but still, he got there with just AI. 5'11" AI playing at SG. Yes. Now who cares if Jerome James is the center? As long as James can play decently, we're good. Sonics got to the second round of the playoffs with James as the center. James is decent. James was not the reason they lost. I would like to think that our PF spot can be and will be better than the sonics's PF spot last season. Everyone is talking about our Center spot while our PF spot is still our weakest link despite having a lot of guys at that position.
