"I saw it as a great opportunity for Nate," Allen said. "The money he's going to make, it's hard to turn it down. I'm happy for Nate. But I'm sadder about Jerome (James) not playing with us anymore. He's one of the guys on the floor who I could help make better. If Jerome continues to play the way he did in the playoffs, he could be scratching the surface of making the All-Star Game."

Yeah And Spree and Houston were sayin that Shanderson would be hard to keep of the floor in the training camp of the year we traded for him.

Players are usually terrible at talent evaluation.

your bitterness is unreal...almost islesfan level...

difference in this case tho is that ray actually played with james for many years so he KNOWS him on a day to day, game to game basis.

and he just said that if he played at the level he did in the playoffs - something we've all been saying.

of course, not many of us are expecting it...

If JJ produced like he did in the playoffs that's extremely accurate. He and Allen were tremendous during the playoffs. I think the Sonics made a big mistake not resigning JJ. Swift is no where near ready and Petro appears to be light years away and is surely bound for the NBDL.

Ray is just stating the obvious. IMO anyone (with a mature, analytical and optimistic mindset) watching JJ in the Playoffs would come to the same conclusion. Hopefully, he'll continue to improve on that playoff performance here in NY this coming season.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Yeah but Ray's got some credibility in this department - remember how badly he dissed Gazy on his way out the door?

"If Jerome continues to play the way he did in the playoffs, he could be scratching the surface of making the All-Star Game."

And i think Ray's comment abouit Gazy was that the only thing he'd be scratching is his own dizzle!

Too funny, apparently evaluating a guy based on 6 games is more analytical then evaluating on the 82 games he played before them, of the 5 games he played after them.

I mean what could possibly be more analytical then picking the one little nugget of data that supports your argument and ignoring the rest.

Unreal. JJ is an allstar caue Ray Allen said so. Just amazing.

where are you getting this from?!?!?

ray said jj could be a fringe allstar IF he continues to play like he did in the playoffs.

why are taking it to such an extreme level like he said JJ IS an allstar already?

NOBODY on this board is saying he's an all star. and i didn't even want him here in the first place. BUT this is a nice remark and a glimmer of some sort of hope for him coming from a guy with some cred.

JJ being an allstar is just an overstatment for emphasis, but if you read Hardcore post for example, you'll see that apparenlty the correct way to analyze data is to pick one little part of it, and only use it to prove your agenda, meanwile ignoring the rest.

man, and ray couldn't have been more right. he said that after him and big dog left, it was tim's team and his time to shine. instead, he regressed and redd took over. and then milwaukee couldn't wait to get rid of that dud.

hopefully, we'll get 3 solid months out of him and then DUMP HIS A S S

he had one good playoff series against the team that traded him. Lets just flush the other 6 years of ineptitude and focus on the 5-6 games he played well.

I hope James plays well. I think he will help us as he fits a need. I also think he will hurt us because he and his contract will become a burden and wind up becoming trade fodder like Spoon's did. I hope I'm wrong... I'm only going on what I have seen

IMO anyone (with a mature, analytical and optimistic mindset) wouldn't base his or her assessment of a player on a week's worth of play & completely ignore the player's averages accumulated over his 5 year playing career...i don't know, maybe i'm being overly logical.

Guys - reread the quote:

"I saw it as a great opportunity for Nate," Allen said. "The money he's going to make, it's hard to turn it down. I'm happy for Nate. But I'm sadder about Jerome (James) not playing with us anymore. He's one of the guys on the floor who I could help make better. If Jerome continues to play the way he did in the playoffs, he could be scratching the surface of making the All-Star Game."

"If Jerome continues to play the way he did in the playoffs. . ."

IF

CONTINUES

WAY HE DID IN THE PLAYOFFS

". . . he could be scratching the surface of making the All-Star Game."

COULD BE

SCRATCHING THE SURFACE

could be a backhanded compliment, but, who cares, he's the 5th option, and will be replaced in the starting lineup by midseason with FRYE (hopefully)

For 5 million a year, that's a bench player if I ever heard one.

But, he knows how to play center and will give us good minutes in any role he plays for us.

Once again, good pick up zeke.

Hey... Jerome James is a good matchup guy... He'll be there to defend against the Iglauskas/Shaq types of the east... and he'll be there to be a pain in the neck for the much smaller Ben Wallace. Teams will have to respect his presence, otherwise we'll get a lot of easy baskets.

Against certain teams, you'll probably see James put up 15ppg/10rpg type numbers.

I don’t think anybody is trying to dismiss JJ’s numbers previous to the 2005 playoff series, those numbers are pretty much indefensible.

I haven’t seen him play much, but I did see the playoff series against the Kings, where, on the biggest stage of his career he was straight up dominant. Even tho his performance cooled against the Spurs, he was still a presence (ask Tony Parker), and a key reason why the Sonics gave the Spurs so much trouble.

Unlike Weatherspoon, Anderson, or another bad contract, JJ is not going to forget how to be 7 foot. Height doesn’t erode over time.

Its not unreasonable, or hopelessly optimistic, to conclude that he can build off of his playoff performance, especially considering the fact that he will be playing with an elite point guard --- not Aaron Carter Ridenhour. Or I could evoke the clichéd Ultimate Knicks prognostication: Mark Aquire will make him better!!

As long as he can block shots, catch and finish Marbury’s dimes, and overall stop teams from treating the paint like Motel 6, I’ll be happy. His contract is reasonable, and over time if he degrades, he can be a big man off the bench. We need size now, that’s non-negotiable. Better option than trading the farm for Kwame where his monthly temper tantrums will be met with reporters and fans questioning Zeke’s brain cells.
