NATE ROBINSON - WE KNEW EARLY > David Locke, Seattle PI, KJRAM Host

This is an article that I wrote for the Seattle P-I in December of 2002. I thought it was interesting to read it as the Huskies head to the NCAA tournament. It makes you wonder if Robinson had played football if he would have made a difference.

The Huskies cheated. No, don’t worry, not cheating like that. They just cheated by not waiting until Christmas Eve or Christmas morning to open their present. Instead, they unwrapped it this fall. And when they did, out came a fearless, 5’7” (program listing of 5’9”) ball of fire named Nate Robinson. A present who is in the process of saving two sports programs...

The article...

Nice article.

What is Nate's actual height in sneakers? 5'8"? 5'7"? Is he closer to Boykins or Damon Stoudamire in height? I'm so excited about his potential. I'm glad Zeke got three winners who play hard. This team is going to have a different energy next year.

He's closer to Stoudamire. Stoudamire doesn't have 1/10 of his athletic ability.

people think he's a short guy that can shoot. He's a world class athlete. I think this Yahoo article puts it best:

LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Robinson could go anywhere from 25, where Seattle knows his game very well, to 35, where Portland also has a firm grip on his skills.

COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: No one like him.

COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: No one like him.

ROLE PROJECTION: A small, strong scoring point guard.

POSITIVES: Robinson is the most unique athlete this size you will ever see play basketball. While he is short, he is a rolling ball of thunder going to the basket, where his amazing leaping ability propels him to the rim. He has decent point guard instincts, but his real mentality is as a scorer. He played defensive back at Washington as a freshman and brings that football mentality to the basketball court.

Hey, hook this kid up with Charlie Ward. Let the Knicks play in Jets stadium as an expansion team. Freddy Weiss and Mirsad Turkcan can be the kickers.

i just so happen to love the way the draft turned out. frye is a solid player, despite the contraversy. nate is a world class athlete and changes the game in many ways. as much as i would like to compare him to webb, this kid has more game, is more of a vocal leader, and has a much better jumper. [i believe he's 5'9 in shoes]
last but not least, lee is a baller in every way.
honestly i was piiiiiizzed off when i heard the suns picked up nate. then i heard he was part of the trade a minute later and completely flipped out! AND we got Q. sweet. now let's see what we do w/our mle. thanks zeke.

Or this Isiah Thomas quote, dunking with left or right hand and backwards!!!
Nate, if he was 6-2, he probably would have been the second, or even the first, pick in this draft,Ó said Thomas. ÒHe was the one kid we worked out who every scout just stood up and watched -- he is that exciting. He dunked with his left hand, his right hand, backwards, at 5-9. He was unbelievable. I may be a bit partial to small players. I remember the tough times we had playing against Spud Webb. Nate will be a tempo changer, heÕll give us a different look. The Garden is going to love him.
