Doubt Knicks lose any base with a Net chip but neutral group that starts to watch and then root will talk hold. Chips do that to people.
Anyone who under the age of 28 remembers or cares about the 1999 run?
There is a generation of fans who are more about the stars then the team. My son in law is a Lebron fan. He is 29. He does not know of knicks being good. Lebrons been playing sinc he was 11. There are Durant fans out there and they are basically a national type of fan.
(Sorry Jrod)......
I was an ABA Net fan back in the day. First pro game I ever saw was 1971 with Rick Barry playing for the Nets. Back then you could be fan of both. Knicks were of course tops. In 1973 we used to go to new Coliseum and it was great fun. They used to let kids like us take a few baskets very early in the warm ups. We’d sneak down and sit at the press table for the last bit.
WE’d go see Dr J on the Virginia squires who was with a young George Gervin then, Pogo Joe Caldwell on he Cougars, etc.
When DR J came t Nets in 74’ it was great fun. KNicks fresh off their second chip and Nets got their first.
Went to game 7 of ABA final vs. Larry Brown coaching the Nuggets with David Thompson. Nets down by 23 rocked the house with a comeback win. Never been to a game seven of any chip, at home since so it was as a young teen a great time! The place was electric. Thing is it was a different experience. Nets Sold DR and then moved to Piscataway. It was over rather fast.
Will the Nets own NY if they win a chip? Not one, but win two or three over 5 years might do the trick. I don’t see a GSW type run in the future but then who ever does?
GSW had Steph, Klay and Dray as a core. Nets had a respectable core of non famous players. Dinwiddie, Lavert, Harris, and Allan are not anything close to stars. I respect the hell out of what they have done and they did it. Nets to me are the same as any other team anywhere else. Being from Brooklyn and a former net fan I thought they might tug at the heart a little bit but really not much. I like MDA, a fan of Nash, and I suppose if the play the Lakers I’ll be neutral. I also like Lebron. I root for greatness and like to see it happen. Really in any sport. Not so much with Brady mind you but for the most part Lebron has grown on me as a player and his intentions off the court. More respect than Fandom. Respect of his career.
Thus I think Nets will gain some fans in NYC and around the country but really Knicks have to get it done to earn any fan base. They are a legacy type. MY son will root for them because he grew up on them. But at some point you gotta just get it done for goodness sake!!!!
Supreme, can you really go full out and starphuch to the Net nation? I can see rooting for them but does that really change your stripes? Nets vs. Clippers? I’m rooting for Nets, but I’m not doing the parade thing.
