The New York Knicks won their last NBA championship under Holzman's tutelage in 1973, before I was even born. I have never witnessed a Knicks championship with my own eyes, although we have come close a few times.
We all know that Knicks fans have starved over generations waiting for a NBA championship banner to come to NYC. There was a glimmer of hope when Patrick Ewing arrived, when Latrell Sprewell arrived to the Knicks.
Phil Jackson has become the face of the NY Knicks over the last year, the single most important person in the organization. But..... unlike in Chicago and LA (big city markets), where he was able to coach players into a championship, his role is now completely different.
He sees Fisher as someone who can grow into a force to be reckoned with as a coach. Fisher had the fire as a player. His spirit has to be somewhat burdened with the losses this season.
Since we have generations upon generations of Knicks fans waiting for an NBA championship, there's several theoretical ways of achieving that. I say theoretical only because this is our best estimate, none of us are fortune tellers.
One way is what we are doing now, trade for a cornerstone perennial all star in the mix, see if his talent and attitude can incite other all stars or role players to join him. This experiment right now is 4 years long with 5 more years to go.
Another way, the portland and oklahoma city thunder way, suck really bad for a while, draft 2 perennial all stars and lets see if they can take you to the promised land. this experiment is yet to yield results in favor of OKC.
Third...Go the Philly Minny way, keep stockpiling draft picks through trades and continue to suck badly until Lebron James hits 35 (31 this December) at this time, switch to Method 2 and hope that with all the high drafting in the 2-3 years after that nets the right core for a veteran to guide to a championship.
Fourth... Go the Spurs way... draft a perennial all star and then continually draft internationally for players that fit your system/attitude/budget.
What best fits your plan?
