I have come to a conclusion that he is not right for NY. I know he did not coach under the best circumstances but still has done a very poor job and I dont see a hint of a change

Dude it's not really about the coach. Guys like Gallo and Felton etc. have to hold up their end of the bargain. From everything i've read MDA is coaching them to do the right things, but they still have to execute on the court. That is evident in the way things go when guys actually play the way he's telling them to play. Anytime you see guys actually execute the PnR properly or the defensive rotations properly the team looks good. So it's not about the coach at that point. It's all on the players on the court and what they do.

Gallo or Felton's shots aren't falling, then what should they do? Well it's clear they should look to drive and make sure to do other things, like defend, rebound etc. When the player doesn't do these things even tho the coach is telling them that's what they need to do, it's not the coaches fault. It's the players.

I've seen how good this team can look when they actually execute what Mike is coaching. It hasn't been nearly consistent enough to be satisfactory. I think also that we already knew that this could take 20 games before the team really gets into a groove, so let's not have these panic attacks. All over the internet people are overreacting to how the team looks in preseason. Let's wait until it actually counts to start the real critique of the team.

OH and I hate the poll questions.

I prefer a strict, no smiling, no joking, disciplinarian who's system is based on defense and rebounding. That's all I'll say for now.

He is right coach for me. Want to see some action.
Had enough of old style Larry.
I think coaches like Zen-master, Pop, or Sloan will be better that Mike.
But they are no idiots to work in NYC for Jimmy so I will take Mike.

Also need to take all opportunities to get into elite NBA coaches group.
He is not in yet but can make it if he will succed in NYC. I like motivated people.

He was the wrong coach for the two-year teardown. But he was available, and so we hired him only to not really need the guy or have a roster suited for his system. We haven't seen SSOL yet. Don't you wanna see that first before making judgements? Now that we drafted Fields and Mozgov who fit SSOL, along with Amare, and more speed at the PG.. we will be seeing the system take form soon. Too soon to make a judgement, but this years roster is more geared for D'antoni's system.

D'antoni doesn't want a lot of fouls. So yeah, you won't get a lot of Oakley style enforcer fouls in the paint. That's an adjustment for Knick fans.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I dont get it.. last I checked the Knicks are playing very good defense this preseason. The defense has been good and the ball movement is improving game by game. Right now our outside shooting is not good and we are getting beat on the boards, BUT even the rebounding thing has improved CLEARLY since that 20 board differential game. Seemed to me that everything the Knicks do poorly is clearly emphasized during the next game. Gallo had 5 boards in the first 10 minutes. Granted he wasnt great after that but the point I am trying to make is clearly his MO after tip off was to attack the glass.

D'Antoni is not the coach for a young rebuilding team. He needs a few all star quality veterans to be successful.

On the other end of the scale you have guys like Skiles who fit a young rebuilding team but co-exist with a team with a few all stars.

If we plan on getting Carmelo I would prefer to keep D'Antoni unless someone like Rick Adelman becomes available.

I think Mayo could some damage with Amare, Carmelo, Gallo(Bench), OJ Mayo()

Seems like we had the right coach with the wrong team.........Larry

For the last two seasons we have had an patchwork roster with a coach who did not do a good job with it.

Can't say if any really could do much better.

Team is gutted. I think after three preseason games I can honestly say I have no freaking idea.

2/3rds of the team has been changed with 10 new players. I can't say Briggy is wrong based on his previous two years but no excuses only reasons. That roster sucked and he did not help.

He gets two year in my book to make this team come together.

Problem is if he underperforms and we bring in an old school guy then was have to tear it apart again.

IN the meant time, run baby run!!!!

You're right. Just look at the assists this team had last game. 24 is a great number and this team is far from clicking on all cylinders. We want perfect right now and that may be unrealistic given the youth and newness of the team. So many new pieces and pieces that aren't finished products. This is a tough task for any coach, but I believe Mike is getting some results.

I said before preseason that I thought the biggest improvement would be on defense and so far it has been.

skiles and Adelman are great at getting a lot out of young teams and not necessarily star studded. Still it's not true that Mike has to have a team full of vets to win. His most successful season was when he had a young Suns team and won 62 games. You had a young Amare, Joe Johnson, Barbosa, Hunter, Casey Jacobsen etc. Even vets like Marion & Quentin were in their 5 & 4th year respectively. It was a young team.

EVERY coach needs that to be successful! DUH!

Who is this coach you guys are dreaming of? I cant WAIT to see how terrible the Nets are this year with Avery "defense comes first" Johnson.

Knick defense has been very good so far. Its the rebounding thats poor. Funny thing.. we dont have good rebounders. Weird how that happens! Its an area of concern pretty much everyone saw. Last game was better. We saw guys who dont usually put more effort on the glass. Its going to be a season long endeavor

If you already have Amare, you stick with the coach that has helped him become what he is. Otherwise, find someone who was under (i.e. what phoenix did). If you want to change system, I don't see why we should keep Amare as other system may not even be a fit for Amare.

In addition, is the pre-season over yet. I wish the season started already so we can really access the players and coaching.

The last 2 years was an obvious waist, yesterday we won the game by playing unselfish almost to a fualt on a few possesions.

When you play that way you give yourself a shot eveytime.
The one thing Mda has to do is define roles so guys have a understanding when there going to play..that's been an issue with him from day one and he still struggles with that.. I know this is preseason, and your talent is pretty unproven, but it comes a time when yor just got to say...these are the 9/10 guys. I'm rolling with..

His biggest dilema at this point is gallo, AR, feilds, chandler and walker all rotational guys that don't know there role..

I guess it's hard for me to pin that type of thing on a coach when he in fact is also trying to see how those guys fit into the system, especially AR, Fields, Walker.

They are fighting for minutes during this offseason, right? Same with Mason.

Lots of combos and player minutes going up and down right now even when not performing well. I suspect things will calm down soon.

Nonsense On Coaches

The Answer Man has come to a conclusion that no one here has never set foot in an NBA locker room while players were being instructed by an assistant coach, let alone the head man. Phil Jackson was heading the Albany Patroons in the CBA until the basketball gods blessed him with Michael Jeffrey Jordan.

If Pat Riley had the Clippers roster, how many rings would he have won?

If iSergio's preference for a "strict, no smiling, no joking, disciplinarian who's system is based on defense and rebounding" had demanded that Clyde participate in the pre game shoot around instead of resting on the bench, would Clyde have been a better basketball player?

Has anybody seen Danny Whelan's orange warm up jacket?

sheesh

Rick Adelman is the right coach for this team. Or Jerry Sloan. If he is an ass, he earned that right big time. To me those are the two top coaches in the game.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

You Cannot Be Serious If You Think The Answer Man Is Kidding

oohah - Mark Jackson was a perfect fit because he would have found his voice leading the pervious roster of temps, refined his voice while negotiating the media attention and then (here is the best part) would have given an authentic voice to the Knicks brand as he welcomed the latest recruits.

Jax is Old school enough to relate to the glory years and New School enough to communicate with guys under 28 years old.

Mark Jackson was a missed opportunity.

and that is almost serious as a heart attack

Rick Adelman?

Huh?

It is one thing to cite a criteria but waiting on Jerry Sloan or Pop is like waiting on The Great Pumpkin.
