A.Would you rather have Jordan Hill Hassan Whiteside[1mm cap hit at 25] Jerome Jordan Jared Jeffries all of our picks in tact David Lee signed to a 6 year 66mm contract that starts at 9mm with roughly 15mm+ in cap space--again --I think a max slot is 16.6 so we couldve got 1 max FA if it was right for us

OR

B.34mm in cap and just Jerome Jordan

I would take the 34 million cap space and the unknown. My only problem with the Walsh and D'Antoni decisions was we threw two seasons, why didn't the Knicks last year tank it out right their draft pick would have atleast yeilded a target of Curry. They knew the plan why did they win as many games as they did. Some of us have been screaming for a tank job and it would have been better had we done that since we were going to throw two seasons anyways. To me that made no sense.

if David Lee was signed, that'd be a lot more than $8.34M in cap space. And we have Jerome Jordan either way.

your argument should be $35M in cap space.

or Hill, Whiteside, Jeffries, DLee and $15M.

basically you are saying that you think Hill, Whiteside, Jeffries and Dlee are worth $20M

This can't be our only choices. There is no guarantee on Whiteside with the 25th pick or Jerome Jordan at 40 whatever. The picks are starting to grow on me. I see their upside. For better or worse, we are in the free agent crap shoot. I think I just talked my self into choice B.

That leaves you with $16.2mm in cap space so its a no go.

WHY WHY WHY would David Lee take that money?

So here is my well thought out answer.

I still do the trade, because those picks/players are worth Bosh, Dirk, Amare, Lebron or Wade. I would also trade those picks and players in order to resign Lee.

Briggs, you and I agree and understand Lee's value. 20/10/4 frontcourt players who can pass, handle and shoot like Lee and score at 55% arent something you go out and replace. He's not signing for $8.5mm.

I'm ok with the risk we took to get a star (or two) in here as well as keeping our own all star. I make the trade

Honestly at this point, id be tempted to jump all the way in and give it our best shot here. If that means attaching Gallo to Curry to find a taker for some non-premium future picks (obviously would have to be a team under the cap, and im sure we could find one) And position ourselves to offer 3 maxes this offseason, id consider it. It would be a game changer. We've come this far, why stop. Go ahead and answer Miami's recent moves

With the current FA class, Walsh did what he had to do. It ain't over until the fat GM sings. That's in a few days. Even if we strike out, it was necessary to at least be in the game. The team will move forward and be better than the past decade.

i'd rather have ownership of our next 2 first round picks & Jordan Hill to use as assets in possible trade scenarios this summer & used David Lee to dump Fishlips' or Curry's contract last season when we still owned his rights.

you could have locked Lee up last year, given him 6 years and structered his cap hold to a min this year.

its less about the exact numbers, amd more about the strategy.

I think we will look back on this 2010 all in gambit as little different than Isiah's insta rebuild starphuch approach.

It's tough to go back over every move and say you wish we would've done it different, since as it is, we are in the mix for the top players. I think DW wanted to see what Lee was gonna do before he committed to him. I can respect that. He didn't want to lock up any cap on any player with the 2010 FA class in site and 2011 right behind it. There was no reason to do it. Not with better players available. He still has the option of a Sign N Trade with a Trade Exception thrown in instead of picks.

I still contend that Picks with potential don't trump Known quantity FA's. having a bunch of nice prospects doesn't guarantee you anything. You need an outright stud. That rare player that comes along once in a while. Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Melo, Durant, CP3 types. Just having an abundance of nice prospects doesn't put you in line for titles. That's why DW took this route. It was the best way to get one of those rare studs. Jennings isn't one of those guys IMO. So I could care less about missing out on him. Yeah it could be considered a mistake, but how bad can it be when he's not a title making player? This is about that top tier of guys that can put you close to a title or at least a bunch of really good players a la Detroit. Those are the only to formulas that win.

We've had no chance to draft one of those guys in the last 2 years. Last year I don't believe there was a Superstar at the top of the draft that could change a teams fortunes. This year we didn't have our pick. So I can't fault DW for his decision to go this route. In a FA class with talent of this level available you have to be a major player. Screw the iffy prospects. What are we really talking about here. Jennings, Hill, Whiteside? Is not having those guys the difference between us winning or not winning a title?

I would rather have Hill, and the picks and shoot for one free agent. I didn't expect other teams to be able to create the cap space that Chicago, NJ, and Miami did with such ease but I think the Walsh had to factor in that other teams might follow his lead and knew it was a possibility. I still think someone pushed Walsh to make the McGrady trade. I don't think Walsh gives up that much unless he is told he has to.

all it took for Chicago to dump Kirk Hinrich's $17M dollar contract was a #17 draft pick & that's just a week before free agency is slated to begin

meanwhile Donnie Walsh gave away a #8 lottery selected rook & the rights to 2 future 1st round picks to dump Fishlips' $7M months before the draft

& some people question why we've argued this was a complete panic move on the part of the Knicks.

Why couldnt we? There were many picks available to 33. 25 was bought for just 3mm in cash==we couldve trumped it with pick 39 and 3mm 31 ws in cash for 2mm we couldve trumped it for 3mm we had pick 38 and 39 to leverage yet we by passed jordan on those picks? And I think Jordan could be a serviceable guy but we wouldve made a statement with Whiteside. The draft we had--the perception of it to FA was as poor as it gets on the night that it occurred.

if we get carlos boozer and Joe Johnson or whoever well still win 30 games

Briggs, there is luck involved here. No one can know whether we will or wont get one of the top three, but we gave ourselves the chance to do so. This same thing has been discussed to death, Walsh did the right thing to give himself and additional bargaining chip of a second max FA to lure Lebron. If he hadn't we didn't stand a shadow of a chance with Whiteside, Hill and Lee to get Lebron. The idea is to lock him up not have enough space for a max FA. Do you really think Lebron or Wade would "elect" to play with those three if they wont sign to play with Bosh/Amare over here?
