Nelson, Ellis trade words after practice

(11-13) 04:00 PST New York --

Warriors coach Don Nelson and Monta Ellis had a public spat after Thursday's practice, an episode that acts as a microcosm of the dysfunctional team and may represent a bigger problem with the franchise and its best player.

Most Warriors players started the season by parroting the message of "getting on the same page." The rosterwide line now appears to be "things can't any get worse," but they're testing that sentiment.

Already, Stephen Jackson is making it increasingly clear that he wants out of Oakland. Anthony Randolph is questioning his playing time, and Ellis and rookie Stephen Curry are struggling to find much cohesion.

Now this:

As the players cooled down from a practice at the Reebok Sports Club and prepared for the bus ride to the hotel, Ellis called Nelson over to the bench, where he sat alongside Jackson and Acie Law.

"Coach, why do I get blamed for everything?" Ellis asked.

Then, the coach and player had this heated dialogue:

Nelson: "What have I ever blamed you for?"

Ellis: "For everything. Everything. People not knowing their plays. I didn't do this. I didn't do that."

Nelson directed a two-handed wave off at Ellis and left the facility. The guard yelled, "That's why I won't do it. I just won't do it."

It remains unclear exactly what Ellis won't do, but he's made it obvious that he doesn't want to be blamed for the Warriors' losing ways.

Any time he's had a chance - from media day 2 1/2 months ago to current postgame interviews - Ellis says each player has to be accountable. At the same time, the Warriors' brass says the guard has to be a leader and a game-changer.

The sides can't even decide whether he's a point guard or a shooting guard. Surely, however, they agree that Ellis should show up to practice on time.

Apparently, that's how the latest squabble started. Ellis had his ankles taped at the practice facility instead of the hotel, causing the team to start shooting before he was ready to take the court.

Ellis refused to talk to media after the argument. He even brushed off friend and teammate Corey Maggette, who tried to calm the situation.

According to a Warriors player, Nelson reprimanded Ellis in front of his teammates. The player said Ellis wasn't the only one who wasn't quite ready when practice was scheduled to begin at noon, but the guard still took the brunt of Nelson's anger.

A Warriors source said no players missed the 11:45 a.m. bus to practice and no fines are expected. Ellis worked exclusively with the starting unit a day before the Warriors play at New York, so it would appear that he won't be punished by lessened minutes, either.

Briefly: Maggette sat out practice with a sore hamstring, but he laughed as Curry, Randolph and Anthony Morrow were hazed into dancing and signing "Happy Birthday" to the 30-year-old. ... Ronny Turiaf (knee) is still not practicing, so the Warriors had to use assistant coach Rico Hines just to field a 5-on-5 scrimmage.

Meh...I pass on that mess. much as I hear complaints about guard needs what stands out for me is there is no real deterrent in the paint. At crunch time that's where I go and just like last game buckets and ones are a killer.

Curry and Gallo for Ellis and George... sign me up baby. Doesn't effect the cap this year, actually helps a little.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

you really want to bring in a guy that wrecks his ankle, lies about it, disses the new lottery pick and says he won’t play with him, complains to the press and his coach ad nauseum? what does he have a long inseam or something?

Curry + Jefferies for SJax + Ellis doesn't hurt the 2010 salary cap plan. It also favors the Knicks greatly talent wise. Meanwhile the Warriors unload contract obligations beyond 2011.

Am I missing something? Both Ellis and Jackson have really bad contracts.

Just say "NO" to knuckleheads with bad contracts.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

While all you guys are pining after Jennings and whomever...I'm watching Dwight Howard and salivating. No way to make it happen though. I wanna 7 footer with a big butt and some post moves and defense. Sheesh can't you guys see where the REAL need is? Right now nothing can help this team as much as a presence in the paint.

I think Ellis can ball. He's going for 18/5.5/5.5. Shooting 42.5 % this year, but in his career he's for 48.5

Might be a knucklehead, but I actually think he's signed to a good contract. $11 mil a season for 5 over his prime isn't bad. I think he'll get better.

I'm not keen on Jackson. Nor am I keen in cutting into the cap space. But maybe then Harrington/Lee could be packaged with Jeffries/Curry. I still don't know.

If you replace Duhon's lack of production with Ellis's production and Chandler's in-consistency with Jackson's consistency AND unload a couple of bad contract/scrubs of our own....what have we really given up?...and it will give our team a better chance to be consistent and notch a few more in the win column. I don't think Jackson and Ellis have bad contracts. Curry and Jeffries, now those are bad contracts. If we could trade two bad contracts for two good players who can contribute...I say Donnie, answer the damn phone!
