GIF format is designed for flat/less complex color graphics like logos and drawings/cartoons. GIF has a maximum of 256 colors available so it isn't the best choice for photographs. If you look at D'Antoni's face for instance, you'll see what we call "banding" or blocking.
JPEG is optimized for continuous-tone images like photographs, and offers better file-size to quality ratio as well.

Of course this is affected by your compression/quality settings. You'll find an 80% quality jpeg exported from photoshop of the banner will look great.
The 3rd web image format that handles both types of images well is PNG. It has a higher file size, but a 24 bit PNG will give you pristine quality images. If you export the banner is a 24 bit PNG it will look perfect. File size/download time should be fine.

Damn oohah, couldn't you find a better picture of Denzel for the GIF example. It looks like he was giving a press conference after picking up his morning paper. Of course that picture is going to look worse than the JPEG no matter what.

I'll make whatever banner updates people want. Thanks for the tip, oohah. I'll make it a JPEG next time. I'm down to remove Marbury and Curry. Do we want replacements? Duhon and Nate? Chandler and Gallinari??
