Without a guy(GM) who determines what type of players fits a coaches style , you get the Larry Browwn Isiah Thomas fiasco.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

I think both positions are equally important and they need to be on the same page. With that said I think the GM has to have a say in picking the coach. Right now Donnie Walsh is the team president. He said he would hire a gm......well ok.....if he hires a coach first......the gm he hires would have to like the coach already here. His philosophy would have to be on par with the coach so he/she can get the coach what he needs to win.

Just look at steve kerr in pheonix. Kerr has a beef with D'antone. Kerr just got there, but yo....if the gm doesn't like the coach guess who's getting fired?

It also can work the other way like with jvg and grunfeld, and billy king and cheeks. In those cases, the coach seemed to have trouble with the players the gm picked up, only for the players to step up and begin to turn it around after the gm was fired.

I just think Donnie needs to have a gm in place before he get his coach.....maybe he also is waiting till a certain date.....a guy like kiki is still under contract until june I believe.....maybe he wants kiki or someone that already has a job. At least in this case jackson is familiar with KiKi and they should be able to work together....that's if Jax is named coach.

Eny in that case Ewing gave Vandummy that kind of power, jeff in himself was a push over on his own.

It depends on the team. On the Knicks, it will be the coach, because Donnie will make all of the important personnel decisions. The gm will handle the details so Donnie doesn't have to bother with them.

They all have a job to do and are equally important. Im sure avery nor mike D wanted those trades. as it essentially took them back a step. Im sure IT didn't want francis, and I no for a fact JVG didn't approve of that Ewing trade especially with Glenn Rice involve. It's a tough call as to who is more important, we just know they all best to be on the same page.

GMs get the players, coaches maximize them. GMs establish a team's ceiling, coaches try get players to consistently reach that ceiling.

Different functions, different but important.

We gotta get the right mix on all fronts.......Donnie and Jax have history. Maybe another guy from the Pacer family might jump in to be GM.....Chuck Person came out of his grave as a coaching option.....maybe Travis Best or Rik Smits might also resurrect from their tombs to GM........guys in power tend to bring in their people......like Mark Aguirre for Isiah.....who knows.

I just can't wait till the lottery so we can focus on the draft. I expect Donnie to have his team intact for that war room.

at this point the GM is far more important for us. though, i agree with those who say the fact that Walsh and Jax will be on the same page is huge.

GM is more important but right now Walsh is making all the decisions for us so coach is more of a priority than a GM.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

A GM who isn't a puppet and actually does have the autonomy to do what's best for the team.

I voted coach because a very good one has as much credentials to run a franchise as a GM as far as putting a team together.

Yeah, just like Isiah did the last 2 years.

You'll be happy to know that he's still here. With as much input as he's always had.
