I DON'T like what I'm seeing from this team. The hitting and starting pitching looks mediocre. I do think the hitting will pick up but not enough to make the Yankees a strong playoff team. I'll say 85 wins. I still think they'll regret passing on Johan.

91-95. Dude it's early in the season and some players that never get injured have had a few bumps and bruises. The Yankees always straighten out. Chill.

I've posted about concerns with the team before the season started. I'm not just responding to these first nine games. (Yesterday's game was 0-0, also, when I posted the thread and the team was 4-4.)

91 to 95 is pretty bad for a team whose goal is to win the world series and that has the highest payroll in baseball. That would likely mean not even making the playoffs actually.

When was the last time the Yankees got off to a good start? Even when they won 114 games in '98 they had a bit of a rough start to the year. It's a long season- i still think they'll win 95-100.

I guess this team's roster isn't very different from last year's--just a bit older. 90 might be a better prediction than 85. (That's still pretty bad given this team's payroll and goals though.)

I wish I had your optimism about the Yankees! You actually think they're better this year than last year?

Three people voted 70 to 75? They must have been joking.

i believe in this lineup & if Joba remains in the setup role for the entire season, i can easily see them bettering last season's totals... it was his promotion to the big leagues last year that vaulted this team straight to the playoffs last season... Joba & Mo is as devastating a 1-2 punch as i've ever seen in the majors, even compared to '96.

Joba is the biggest plus but there are MANY old players on this team who could easily be worse than last year (Pettitte, Mussina, Mariano, Posada, Damon, Abreu). As for the hitting, I don't like the fact that they're not even drawing walks right now. That should be something they do even when the bats are cold. Drawing walks makes the pitcher work harder and have to throw more hittable strikes.

i hear the stuff about age every year & yet every year guys like Jorge & Mo continue to put up numbers... right now Mo is looking more dominant than he's ever looked & Abreu has gotten off to a terrific start at the plate in his contract year... both Andy & Moose have had great outings their last time's out also... Jorge's been slowed by a strain in his throwing arm & Damon is Damon, nothing new there... drawing walks is getting very nitpicky this early in the season... these guys are vets & the season hasn't even gotten fully underway yet... the walks will come... Giambi's been drawing plenty of walks to get on base, which is a good thing cuz his BA stinks... Cano's never been a guy to draw many walks... Jeter's been injured the past couple games... ARod's gonna mash like he always does, & so will Matsui... both of them have gotten off to solid starts... Melky's even showing some pop in his bat, that HR last night to deep left center was very impressive to say the least & i believe he hit it from his weaker hitting side to boot.. he usually only gets his HR's from the left side on balls he pulls, but not this one... his RBI totals have gone up each year he's been in the majors & i believe this season he has a legit shot to drive in at least 85 runs if he stays healthy... not bad for a #9 hitter.

what was the Yankees' record last year at this date? anyone know?

anyone know what the Mets' record was last year at this time?

a lot of things can change in the span of a 4 months... this is not to say things will, but what's the point in even reviving this thread before we're even at the Allstar break? an 8-10 game winning streak at the right time can put this team right back in the Pennant hunt... we just got back our main guns & Joba has still not been given a chance to make an impact in the starting rotation... what's the point in having these discussions right now when the team is still transitioning & have another 100 games left to play?
