Where do you stand on acquiring a "need" and a "talent"?

I'm bringing this up since I see so much talk about who we should draft this season: Rose, Beasley, etc. and of course the trade deadline passing. By "need", I mean plugging holes that a team has: Us drafting Balkman for defense, Phoenix trading for Shaq for rebounding and low-post help for Amare, Spurs trading for Kooky Kurt for low-post help for RoboTim. And, of course, talent means getting the best player available regardless: Hornets drafting Paul, Lakers trading for Pau (though that was also a "need" trade). Personally I'd like to say "draft for talent, trade for need" since that seems to be the Spurs model and they've won 4 of the last 9 titles. Say we here had a fresh clean slate to build a team, what do you think is most important to creating a perennial contender?

This team NEEDS everything. You draft and trade for the best talent.

Depends on your situation. Good teams draft need, bad teams draft talent. If two players are similar in talent, then you go with the need. Knicks should be going best player available/highest upside. If they rank Beasley and one of the PG's equally then they must draft the PG

Then when that player is on the team they MUST PLAY THEM.

No More Trades!

Draft Talent- this is how most teams get their 'franchise' player.

Take the best available player. We have had enough of diamonds in the rough, may be we need some diamonds that have been cut and polished.

Draft for youth and athleticism. If two players are similar in athleticism, go with youth. If two players are similar in age, go with the more athletic player. If the pick is top 3, trade it.
Sh-t in the popcorn to go with sh-t on the court. Its a theme show like Medieval times.

Hmm....

I think we should trade for talent and need, and draft for need and talent. I think we need to trade, and we need to draft for talent.

We won't get talent if we don't trade or draft for talent. On the other hand, we cant expect to fill needs if we don't either draft for need or trade for need.

I would say, definitely, need for talent, trade for draft.

In our situation, we need players who have the best chance of being absolute studs, thus draft for talent. That being said, you obviously can't have more than two very talented players playing the same position, so you absolutely must trade for need.

The one exception with drafting for talent is if you will need to make a trade later based on drafting this player, and you think you're not going to get full value in any trade to balance the roster. In this case, taking slightly less talent that fills a bigger need may be quite justified.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
