Do the Knicks need to make some trades to get better?

Do the Knicks have the personnel necessary to become a contender? I'll define a contender as not necessarily a truly dominant team-- I'm looking for a middle-of the road playoff team. (ie 4, 5, 6 in the conference standings, vs 7, 8, and worse) In the eastern conference, a .500 record gets you in the middle of the pack, while a .400 winning percentage gets you on the fringe of a playoff spot nowadays. My opinion is a little bit of 2 and 3. I believe the Knicks have enough talent with our current injury/suspension riddled lineup to win games. I think having only 8 active players is close to ideal-- though I think the Knicks could use a healthy Q-Rich to our current mix. Many of the issues we've had this season are because we're too deep at certain position (guards are a big issue). We have a bunch of starting quality players who end up getting platoon-type playing time. And that's just no good for anyone. I think for the Knicks to be more success, we need to settle on a shorter rotation, and perhaps trade away some of our extra talent for draft picks. I think we have very good players at every position, so it's difficult to target a specific position that could use an upgrade. On paper, you can't get too much better than a Frye/Curry/Lee rotation at the big man positions-- I'm satisfied sticking to them and watching them develop; we can move Lee to SF for stretches to keep all 3 on the floor if necessary. Jeffries is solid utility guy-- he's the perfect mop up guy who can soak up minutes in the front or backcourt-- Balkman is also a great utility guy who provides the same sort of thing with a different skill set. I think the hodge-podge of guards is where we can do the most weeding. If we can package 2 or 3 players to get a power wing player (think something like a Paul Pierce/Caron Butler), that'd give us an element that we're missing. With Marbury/Nate/Francis/Crawford, there's an awful lot of duplication of skills. Alternatively, if we can get a pass-first PG for one of those guys (think Andre Miller), it might free up our offense. It's not necessarily about upgrading talent, though--- it's about finding talent that fits better in our mix.

Yes, we need to upgrade the [insert position]!

Yes, we have too much talent so we need to thin it out for chemistry purposes.

No, we have all the tools we need; we just need more patience.

I think we either need to play Q at the 2, or get a shooter at the SG position.
I don't think any of Francis, Nate, or Craw are starting SG in this league.

We need a pg that can defend and distribute

Maybe certain trades might help, but I also think theres a value to keeping the same guys together. It seems like there's been some big trade or other every year for the past six years or so. Sometimes it may be necessary, but I think it is disruptive to the team.

the only time this team wins games is when kids are out or suspensions. You have to thin out the guards or play 9 people minutes. Frye, Lee, Robinson, or Balkman need to be traded to get rid of another contract and balance the team out.

i think we need a franchise player to win a championship.

but if your aim is just to get better, then just need to develop the guys we have & be patient... i would prefer to cut the fat by getting rid of Marbury, Francis & Big Turd, & allow the young guys to take over this team... possibly trade Nate &/or Frye if i can get a stud shotblocker.

Francis or Crawford should be traded. Frye if he brought something back.
We could be the Dallas Mavs of the East.

This team got bown out in the first quarter of these last two games, why does anybody think "shorting the lineup" is the key to these last two wins???? This team needs everybody on it, because we won't always have teams missing wideopen shots like our last two teams. I would always make a trade to get better, but I would get rid of Nate or anybody because of these last two wins.

Francis still needs to go though.

We need upgrades at (in order) SG, PG, SF.

perhaps. if so than its at the guards primarily. but i think this team can be a playoff team if marbury is aggressive every game. thats why I wouldnt mind putting him at the SG spot, but apperently no coach agrees with that.

we don't have too much talent- that is for sure. What we do have is a lot of decently talented guys who, if combined in a trade to bring back a superior talent, would probably help balance the team out.

we need a prototypical SG who can defend. I dont know if Q can handle the SG anymore.

a starting SG and a passing/defensive PG and we'd be in much better shape. the front court is set.

Yes. Need to think the herd a bit and up the talent level, however if I was them I would be more interested in making moves based soley on the future(getting a PG stud we can develop, maybe a post presence not as enigmatic as Curry, A young true SG would help but I think when Q and Jefferies should start at the 2 and 3 repectively, short term.).

I think we need to play a little addition by subtraction. Thought we could use a decent outside shooter.

In the long-run we need PF/Cs who play tough defense, block and alter shots, and rotate on defense. We need a PG who runs the offense and an SG who's a good shooter. (all in that order) Right now we have a 29 to 35 win team.

marbury has been playing exceptional defense on bigger PGs and SG...however its the small speedy ones that giv ehima problem

i say we need a power foward who defends...although frye has been playing better defensively

None of our pgs play exceptional defense. Our perimeter defense is horrible.

My feeling is that our perimeter defenders will get better when our big men get healthy/non-suspended. Jeffries will help out a lot subliminally. In theory, would-be slashers will hesitate slightly when they see our 7 footers standing behind our guards.

He's played terrible help defense, O.K. man defense at times and terrible switching D. People watch him lock up Adam Morrison for a few positions and get a couple strips in the lane on a few players and all of a sudden he's All-NBA First Team Defensebury
