I think the tone has already been set for this thread. If discussions about trading Steph result in personal attacks I would hate to see where this thread ends up if somebody take the bait.^

Naturally, the common people don't want war ... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

-Hermann Goering, Nazi Minister Of Propaganda and Hitler's Right Hand Man, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II

Watch what the Republicans are doing about Murtha speaking out. They get their practices from the Nazis. Its right there in the quote.

I would not vote on immediate withdrawl, because that could lead to chaos, possible civil war, and the Bathe party could eventually end up back in power, making the 250B+ and 2200 lives worth nothing. I was never in favor of this war, in fact, I really only know 2 people who actually were in favor of it and they arent today.

The way to do this is to have a phased pullout with the help of the uN, making sure that the Iraqui army is prepared to handle the ground mess, and thats what it is going to be for years and years.

But enough is enough for America. We float debt on this war EVERY SINGLE day at an amount of 50-100mm$--meaning China Japan Saudia Arabia are actually paying for it, but the AMERICAN people--especially the middle classwill end up PAYING for it. Did anyone listen to the mortgage interest deduction removal rumors from your taxes?
This has NOTHINg to do with very wealthy people--this hits at the core of the middle class--this is money that people who own homes and lengthy expensive mortgages can deduct that interst from their taxes each yea, giving mainly young families with kids--the true heartbeat of the USA, a nice financial spitback each year--proabably ranging from 5k to 15k. Now thats a LOT of money to some people, necessity money, and this war THREATENS that money, which in turn threatens a WHOLE lot of potential loan defaults which would be helter skeleter on the economy.

We have to phase out of this war and do it ASAP, balancing some stability with an Iraqui army in place in comnbination with OUR own economic SURVIVAL.

Ill go back and say this, if I didnt have that interest deduction from my home that I bought years ago that I still live in, and I worked a good job + I worked a seperate job on the weekend when I first bought it, I wouldve defaulted if I didnt get that deduction break. So I fully understand that consequence of this, they CANNOT take the debt of this war and pass it on to middle class americans.

Make a special war-time luxury tax for people who have assets over 10mm$ @ 5%.

Look, I have been against this war throughout. But I don't think an immediate pull out from Iraq is an option at this stage.

Before I go into that, let me say my piece.

People talk about the cost of the war to the US in terms of $$$ and # of American casualties. Yes, it’s awful and regrettable, and I pray for those who’ve suffered/are suffering from the war. But you need to remember that this war was started by the US, and pretty much the entire world was opposed to this war. Yeah, the governments of UK, Australia, Japan, Spain, etc, etc, supported Bush, but the majority of their peoples was against US invasion of Iraq. These governments had pretty much no choice but help the US despite domestic opposition because of their foreign policies that are heavily geared towards having strong ties with the US.

I just want you to look at this war from the perspective of the Iraqis and the rest of the world that was dragged into this mess.

Let me see, the US uses false (more like falsified) intelligence info to justify the invasion of Iraq. Remember how bullish the US was? "You're either with us or against us"... Bush sells the war and the US media eagerly & easily buys into it. Powell goes to the UN and makes his sales pitch. Then, boom...! Thousands of innocent people in Iraq are getting killed by both the insurgents and the US troops. And it's getting worse. Did the Iraqi people ask for this? Did they have a say in this war being fought on their land? I'd assume that majority of Iraqi Shiites would have been supportive of the US invasion because they've been the ones oppressed and tortured by the Sunni Saddam regime for decades. But I bet they thought that the mighty USA would not start a full scale invasion of an Arab/Islamic country without any real post-war nation-rebuilding strategies. Had they known that the outcome of the US invasion was a burning hell of anarchy in their neighborhood and throughout the country, they probably would've said – NO THANKS. The US, in the name of attacking evil, managed to create the breeding ground of evil. I don't think the Iraqi people and the world is too pleased with that. It's no joke. It's real. Democracy? Freedom? Come on, it's anarchy out there.

But why did this happen? Ooops... now we all know there was no valid reason for this irresponsible crazy invasion. Can this be allowed? We're in 21st century, guys. We talk so much of human rights. There is no humanity in what is going on in Iraq. If what Bush and his people did to Iraq is not a crime against humanity, I don't know what is. And it was the Americans who chose Bush as their leader.

Sorry, I got emotional here. I know a guy who came back from Iraq without both legs and a hand. He used to be a sunny & funny guy who also was an awesome soccer player. He’s in his late 20s, married with 2 kids. And there are thousands of these people, not just Americans, but mostly Iraqis and others from around the world.

So, when there’s a talk in America about the Americans getting the fu*k out of Iraq right away, I say, WHAT? Who’s responsible for this mess? It was an American gun-ho cowboys named Bush, Rumsfeld, Powell, etc that started this war. If the US wants to regain the respect of the world, it has to make sure that when they leave the country, they leave it in safe hands. I don’t know how that can be done without the help of the UN and massive involvement of other developed nations’ military forces on the ground. In other words, the US needs to admit its mistake and ask for help.

People in the US will have to pay for it one way or the other. Don’t worry, the world has been paying for it too, and will continue to do so.

Open Letter to George's Mama

...a message from Cindy Sheehan

Dear Barbara,

On April 04, 2004, your oldest child killed my oldest child, Casey Austin Sheehan.

Unlike your oldest child, my son was a marvelous person who joined the military to serve his country and to try and make the world a better place. Casey didn't want to go to Iraq, but he knew his duty. Your son went AWOL from a glamour unit. George couldn't even handle the Alabama Air National Guard. Casey joined the Army before your son became commander in chief. We all know that your son was thinking of invading Iraq as early as 1999. Casey was a dead man before George even became president and before he even joined the Army in May of 2000.

I raised Casey and my other children to use their words to solve problems and conflicts. I told my four children from the time that they were small that it is ALWAYS wrong to kick, bite, hit, scratch, pull hair, etc. If the smaller children couldn't find the words to solve their conflicts without violence, I always encouraged them to find a mediator like a parent, older sibling, or teacher to help them find the words.

Did you teach George to use his words and not his violence to solve problems? It doesn't appear so. Did you teach him that killing other people for profits and oil is ALWAYS wrong? Obviously you did not. I also used to wash my children's mouth out with soap on the rare occasion that they lied... did you do that to George? Can you do it now? He has lied and he is still lying. Saddam did not have WMDs or ties with al-Qaeda and the Downing Street Memos prove that your son knew this before he invaded Iraq.

On August 3rd, 2005, your son said that he killed my son and the other brave and honorable Americans for a "noble cause." Well, Barbara, mother to mother, that angered me. I don't consider invading and occupying another country that was proven not to be a threat to the USA is a noble cause. I don't think invading a country, killing its innocent citizens, and ruining the infrastructure to make your family and your family-friendly war profiteers rich is a noble cause.

So I went down to Crawford in August to ask your son what noble cause did he kill my son for. He wouldn't speak with me. I think that showed incredibly bad manners. Do you think a president, even if it is your son, should be so inaccessible to his employers? Especially one of his bosses whose life George has devastated so completely?

I have been to the White House several times since August to try and meet with George and I am going back to Crawford next week. Do you think you can call him and ask him to do the right thing and bring the troops home from this illegal and immoral war in Iraq that he carelessly started? I hear you are one of the few people he still talks to. He won't speak to his father, who knew the difficulties and impossibilities of going into Iraq and that's why he didn't go there in the 1st Gulf War. If you won't tell him to bring the troops home, can you at least urge him to meet with me?

You said this in 2003, a little over a year before my dear, sweet Casey was killed by your son's policies:

"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" (Good Morning America, March 18, 2003)

Now I have something to tell you, Barbara. I didn't want to hear about deaths or body bags either. On April 04, 2004, three Army officers came to my house to tell me that Casey was killed in Iraq. I fell on the floor screaming and begging the cruel Angel of Death to take me too. But the Angel of Death that took my son is your son.

Casey came home in a flag draped coffin on April 10th. I used to have a beautiful mind too. Now my mind is filled with images of seeing his beautiful body in his casket and memories of burying my brave and honest boy before his life really began. Casey's beautiful mind was ended by an insurgent's bullet to his brain, but your son might as well have pulled the trigger.

Besides encouraging your son to have some honesty and courage and to finally do the right thing, don't you think you owe me and every other Gold Star parent an apology for that cruel and careless remark you made?

Your son's amazingly ignorant, arrogant, and reckless policies in Iraq are responsible for so much sorrow and trouble in this world.

Can you make him stop? Do it before more mothers' lives are needlessly and cruelly harmed. There have been too many worldwide already.

Sincerely,

Cindy Sheehan

I mean so many people in Iraq are going thru somthing similar as this woman. Do you think the world opinion would allow the US to leave from Iraq still in turmoil? What would be the consequence of that?

What a windbag Cindy is. That letter would be great to use in a logic class, it is ripe with informal fallacies.

well i'm curious about responding to this letter on that basis. what role would you give to the emotion that it expresses versus the logic that it follows?

So if you lost your loved one in an unjustifiable war, you won't be upset? Do you think that the content of Cindy’s letter is unreasonable?

Look, my girlfriend's collegue/friend was killed in Iraq. He was an officer at Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs laying the ground work so that the Japanese self-defense force could come in and help the people with medicine, food, infrastructure, etc. He was really an awesome guy. My girlfriend and he joined the Ministry in the same yr after graduating from college and worked together for about 10 yrs.

In May last year, his car was ambushed in Tikrit by a convoy of Iraqi insurgents, spraying the car with AK-47 bullets just like in mafia movies. When it was all over, there were 36 bullet holes left on the car. The guy, another Japanese fellow, and an Iraqi driver were killed like dogs because the Japanese government supports the US. He left a wife and a baby girl. My girlfriend could not recover from this incident for months. She was a wreck. And this guy was her friend/colleague, not her son she gave birth to and raised.

There are many people in NY who went thru similar tragedy with 9/11. It’s the same kind of sorrow, emptiness, despair.

In Cindy's case, the death of her son was preventable. He didn't die from an unexpected terrorist attack or some kind of freak accident. He was sent to a war-zone by George Bush. A war with no justification – the majority of the American public now agrees that this war is wrong.

I think Cindy’s reaction is totally understandable. I mean Bush keeps ignoring her request to speak to him, and he even said that he needed to get on with his life. What kind of leader is that? What kind of man is that?

I am so bewildered that there is no public outcry in America demanding Bush’s impeachment. Remember Clinton’s sex scandal and the hearings? Come on! That was a joke! Yeah, he lied and that was dumb, but what harm did he really do in screwing Ms. Lewinski and staining her sweater? Americans want everything to be so politically correct, yet look at George Bush’s track record…

  • The election scandal

  • Enron scandal

  • Tax cut to the rich

  • Cutting budgets for many social/environmental programs

  • Attack on the environment

  • Pre-9/11 screw up (inability to prevent attack despite warning; special flight for the Bin-Laden family, etc etc)

  • Iraq war --- Downing Street Memo, Halliburton corruption (where are the billions$$$ gone???), mounting deaths of Americans & Iraqis, doing an excellent job of recruiting new terrorists, how much has America spent on this war so far?

  • Re-election fraud???

  • Very slow & disinterested initial response to South East Asia Tsunami catastrophe

  • Hurricane Katrina blunder

  • Homeland Security & FEMA failure

  • Giving high position jobs to unqualified pals

  • Screwed up Supreme Court Judge nomination - LOL!!! I thought he was gonna say "HA-HA! Just kidding!" But he was serious...

  • CIA leak scandal

  • Image & Support for the USA around the world at an all time low

I have to admit that he is so dumb that he is funny. But if I were American, I’d be so appalled that he represents me and my country.

You got pissed off and almost impeached a president who was intelligent, hardworking, charismatic, and attractive in Bill Clinton. He was an awesome leader and was loved wherever he went. America was in such a good position globally when he was in charge. His fault was that he was too attractive and that he is married to a man (j/k).
Bush, on the other hand, may not be screwing around with Whitehouse interns, but he is not too bright (like his mom) to be a President, and he's certainly screwing A LOT of people’s lives – like Cindy’s for example. She is trying to make Bush accountable for his actions. She's questioning the leadership quality of the President. What's wrong with that?
