Donovan Mitchell will play for Knicks: ex-teammate Joe Ingles

Joe Ingles expects Donovan Mitchell to one day don a Knicks Jersey.

Whether that’s now or later, Ingles wasn’t sure, but the former teammate of the NBA All-Star and current Cavalier seemed certain Mitchell would wind up in the Big Apple.

Mitchell is a native New Yorker and has often been linked to the Knicks, but nothing has ever materialized.

During a radio interview Wednesday, Ingles touched on Mitchell joining the Knicks.

“This is like non-bias, no outside info, I think he’ll play for New York one day, whether that’s sooner or later,” Ingles said on 97.5 The KSL Sports Zone. “I think it would be great for New York and I think it would be great for him. Whether or not that actually happens we’ll wait and see.”

Ingles and Mitchell played together in Utah from 2017 until the end of the 2022 season.

The Knicks pursued a deal for Mitchell last year when he was still in Utah but couldn’t pull the trigger before the Cavaliers did to acquire him.

New York and Mitchell had been linked so much last season that even Mitchell thought he was headed to the Knicks when he found out he had been traded.

The Post’s Stefan Bondy reported this week that Mitchell was still on team president Leon Rose’s radar.

The rumors around the Knicks and Mitchell aren’t going to go away anytime soon, but Ingles did say his former teammate was enjoying his time with the Cavs thus far.

“He’s really enjoying it there,” Ingles said. “He’s a New York kid, obviously it’s always going to get brought up, but he genuinely is enjoying — he enjoys the group.”

Mitchell’s status in Cleveland will continue to be a topic of conversation until his long-term future is sorted out.

He could become a free agent as soon as 2025.

The Knicks faced Mitchell and the Cavaliers on Tuesday and Wednesday, splitting a home-and-home to move to 2-3.
