So the site went down today, and my uptime tool didn’t catch it. I also had a hard time getting everything back up.
The root cause is … lack of hard drive space. Now I know the issue I’ll work on sorting it out, although the timing couldn’t be any worse.
Also WordPress wants to update as well. The site might go down for short bursts, but I should be able to get it stable.

OK so my notifier didn’t work because WordPress gives you a basic web page when it fails. That is, it gives you A web page, it’s just not smart enough to know that it’s a web page that is telling me the site is down.
I’ve changed the parameters and now have 2 more notifiers looking for specific text on two different pages. I may add more as well.

Let me repeat the blasphemous suggestion I made on the Discord this morning. Consider these factors:
1)The site basically doesn’t have original content anymore, and it seems like most people ignore the news bot and just come to comment;
2)The site is ancient by internet standards, and thus more inclined to glitch; and
3)Mike himself is the one who has to fix stuff, and he doesn’t spend enough time here anymore for it to be worth the bother.
Given that, should we consider a more permanent relocation? Whether that’s to the Discord, to a subreddit, to a Substack, or something else I haven’t thought of. We’re here for the community, not for the non-existent bells and whistles. The community can in theory migrate elsewhere.
Would people want that? For that matter, would Mike want that? I’m happy to stay here, but I don’t want to put the burden of more and more frequent repairs on our generous host.
Alan, very long winded way of saying they have Gifs on Discord. Docking you for a lack of concision.
At the risk of out-Donnieing myself, may I ask what a discord invitation is, and is it similar to what Impostor Ephus is trying to sell me?

Looks like there’s a new “morning news” thread.
Discord basically lets you have private forums, so it’d be KB people. There wouldn’t be 1000s of random people dropping in like with Twitter unless we have a lot more lurkers than I suspect
It might make it harder to go back and see who had dumb opinions from 12 years ago tho

The lurkers make think about it, because i was a lurker for a long time, and then started to comment… every single day! 😛 What i’m trying to say is if we go to a private space, there’ll be no more new members that started lurking and then decided to join the party.
I’m on discord quite a bit. I prefer 100% to stay here. It’s the last place on the internet that is free of fucking reactions counting, and annoying images. It’s much, much better here for the type of deeper discussion we’re having.
I’d vote for keeping this place open, because the archaic format leads to a sort of a discussion you’re less inclined to have in a chat room. The discord is nice to have as a backup or as “bonus” KB content.
A friend of mine talks about how Larson is very pretty, but in such a generic way that it’s easy to mistake her for other people. (My friend also views Larson as her style inspiration, and jokes about what that says about herself.)
As long as we can get past the glitches, I’d like to stick around. There’s something charming about posting on a message board from the early aughts in 2023. Of course, the community is more important than the medium so if we can’t figure out the glitches moving makes sense.
I agree on the archaic format. It gives us all the chance to be the windbags we always dreamed of being. It still has merit I think, although I do love a tastefully chosen gif now and again.
How do Discords add new members? Is it all word of mouth and private invites?

Mike can correct me if i’m wrong, but i think a disk space is a good problem to have. I’m not saying it goes away without working on it, but a code problem would be a lot worse. yeah discord or whatever seems best as an emergency band for the addicts if kb goes down during a gamethread or a true emergency, like deuce getting traded for tristan thompson while strat is low on brandy. and of course for jowles ass pics. unless, as alan wrote, mike decides he would rather not continue with his seemingly lifelong charity hosting commitment, in which we should agree to put the burden on owen. also, i can’t remember if i made an invitation that expires in two weeks or lasts indefinitely so i’ll put out another one if needed.
Discord would probably be fun for in-game chats. This place is more for pontificating.

I too vote for maintaining this site, assuming that’s do-able. It’s ancient and archaic, but it feels more like wine than milk to me.
That’s a very good idea. Although Milo is the “chairman” of the Discord group, so it’s him that has to agree with it.
I think everyone should just bookmark it now. When the site goes down you generally won’t be able to find any links on it.

It’s up to you folks if you want to stay here or go to discord. Obviously if no one comes here anymore I’ll shut the site down. If people are still happy here and commenting, then the site will stay up and I will do my best to keep it up at all times.
Linking to discord will not help when the site goes down because obviously as other people have noted the site will be down and you won’t be able to get those links. I will do that anyway if everyone wants, so you know where to get the link when the site is up and you can bookmark it or whatever.
Yes it drivespace issue is an easier one to solve then code. I am working on it and I’ve freed up some more space. We should be good for a while without any modifications.
Last thing they do want me to upgrade the back end of the site but I have until June to do it.
