All honesty this makes RJ’s contract looks better. I like him a lot more than I like Herro as a current player and based on upside.

Hell yeah - defense included for one.

except RJ was not a very effective defender last year and Herro has much better offensive #s

Today Herro is a better player... hopefully that plays out differently in the future

Miami is overloaded at SG/SF. All these guys are 6'4"-6'7":

Herro, Duncan Robinson, Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, Oladipo, Butler, Caleb Martin.

That's a lot of small ball

I am of the mindset that we are in too deep and his value is too low to trade him now. If his 3pt shot has improved like was said he will have a huge increase in productivity from last year based on that alone.

Disagree with your dismissiveness of RJ’s D. He regularly guards the opposition’s best offensive players and does a good job with a lot of effort. Herro on the other hand, uh, blows in that department. While Herro is the better offensive player by a margin, say, defensively he is way way behind RJ. I’d take Barrett any day.

Herro's defense is enough of a detriment that you have to grind your teeth every time he's on the court. It wasn't a coincidence that RJ put up career numbers against Miami with Herro guarding him on a good number of possessions. In fact, RJ was hunting him for the mismatch. The thing with RJ is that even though he's improving, he still hasn't shown that he's capable of doing anything at a high level. Herro is an above average movement shooter with some creation skills. What does RJ have that he can legitimately hang his hat on? That will be his evolution.

Im not dismissing RJ's defense. Im saying it wasnt good last year based on the #s. Was the effort there? Sure... was he effective? Well the #s say no, we was not

None of his metrics were very good last year. I like RJ plenty and Im glad we resigned him but the #s dont lie... he plays really hard and passes some eye tests but he wasnt stopping anyone. His opponents EFG% was not good at all.

Shall we cherry pick our links? Rather than dig up nebulous stats, let's see some footage -- you know, the eye test:

This kerfluffle was based on Herro vs RJ. My point is RJ is a solid defender who regularly draws the opponent's best scorer -- there's a stat out there for that btw. I don't say he is the reincarnation of the Glove. But I do say he is good -- you disagree. Again my opinion is I prefer him over Herro. And certainly like you I would love to see progress in all departments.

I prefer him of Herro as well... its not really a cherry picked link. Its the two most basic "how does your defense impact team #s" and "how does your defense impact opposing player #s" and both are totally average. Is what it is. You wanna sell me on "RJ take the toughest assignments and one can expect growth" well I'm sold.

Every time I watch Tyrese Maxey he stands out even in games with superstars. This guy is a problem and he keeps getting better.

The media’s ball washing of Herro has cooled down since his rookie year. RJ is the better all around player now. If Riley could trade Herro for RJ straight up he would do it in a nanosecond

Lin is promoting a documentary and will be full of controversy.

Have to credit that when you throw spaghetti on the wall some of it sticks. Briggs does toss the starchy stuff around but one of those strands did stick and it had Lin’s name on it.

I don’t think he slams the knicks much for letting him walk. MDA was on his way out so a change was in the air. Rockets put a poison pill in the contract constraining knicks to match.
In the end Lin’s ascension was limited by his knees. Even a fair documentary has its theme to produce good guys and bad ones.
I read he does not call out Melo or any knick for the rumored jealousy. But the story might be there was internal debate among players and front office.
In hindsight, was that really so wrong? Was it based on his ancestry? If so then it was. As a player he had short sample at that high level.
As a fan I loved it and regret we did not resign him. But that would have abated with his diminished capacity as the knee limited him.

Man, I'm already having nightmares about Fournier trying to keep up with Murray
