The most astonishing thing about this pandemics is the level of Human Kind complacency and idiotic believe that we are in control of our life and destiny.
We as civilization are less in control of what we have that any times in human history.
We cannot prevent the pandemics, cannot control the natural disasters, cannot control our own birth rate and the distraction we put on the nature all the way to poisoning and warming our planet.
All we do well is developing a new ways to kill each other with ever grater efficiency and in bigger numbers.
And when we get an opportunity to sit back and reflect on what is really important in our life we get psychotic because our favorite toys are taken away and our freedom is reduced.
All this shiny things, all money and power are equally worthless when attack by tiny little invisible creatures.
Why not to just be grateful for what we have in our family, loved once, and beautiful world given to us to experience for a short moment of our lives?

We might not be in control of events, but what we can do is give ourselves the best chance of mitigating them. Properly invest in free universal health care, have proper welfare safety net, pursue protective environmental policies, have contingency plans in place etc, rather than just worship 'the free market'.

If this whole debacle doesn't expose what a con this whole free market zealotry was, I really don't know what will. The big businesses blocking universal health care, etc because it was 'unaffordable' and you can't give handouts and you can't interfere with the free market are the first guys crying out for hundreds of billions of dollars in government bailouts- AGAIN! That's twice in 12 years.

This is key. To add, we CAN be in control of quite a few things. For example things we buy. If %50 of people who buy coffee everyday use a thermos instead of single use cup can you imagine the amount of garbage that can be reduced by that SINGLE action? If people choose goods and produce with minimal packaging this will surely create changes in how those goods are packaged, free market system really encourages any advantages to be implemented to get a leg up on the competition. Just because people don't buy with a certain criteria in mind doesn't mean that we cannot. Its only a matter of time until it becomes mainstream and changes the approach altogether

Small things do add up.
We have never been in control of virus, Mother Nature, earthquake, or the will of the ruling powers.
Monarchs, free markets, colonialism, imperialism, socialism all required assets to work. Gained from indigenous conquests of lands not paid for, human enslavement, military conquests, etc......
Most of us too busy to cook, so we do take out, too forgetful to bring reusable shopping bag, etc. Back in the day life was a greater struggle to grow own food,, deal with hostile weather, hostile humans who wanted your shyt, and maybe decades old wars.
Yes, you can control small things and they add up.
Vote. Might not change your life, but our children’s. Its why our DNA had those that fought to survive. Came to escape persecution, starvation, build a new life. The fight is not over. Can you just stay the **** in your houses?

Exactly compared to what was required to survive by prior generations this is light work. Just stay in your house. You live there dammit.

Exactly what I am talking about.
The problem is most of the people have no idea how to deal with their own mind.
So when they are locked in the house alone or with family they go crazy very fast and to save themselves and close people they are running out.
Dealing with you own mind is a skill and art.
Our society is not teaching this in schools and universities. And parents are not teaching their kids because they do not know themselves.
You say it is easy now... no... it is much more difficult.
People have million opportunities our days to distract themselves from reality.
And when the reality hit home they are lost and broken.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/coronavirus-infectious-how-long-contagious-days-week-symptoms-larynx-study-a9441076.html

Coronavirus sufferers are most likely to pass on the virus during their first week of symptoms, research suggests.

And with pressure on hospital beds, some of those beyond their tenth day of symptoms could safely be allowed home to self-isolate, a study says.

Scientists who analysed data from nine patients in Germany with mild symptoms found that the virus spread actively in the upper respiratory tract — the nose, mouth and throat.

A loss of sense of smell and taste have been widely pinpointed as early symptoms.

The researchers analysed throat and lung samples, sputum — mucus from the respiratory tract, and blood and urine from the patients.

OK guys. My mother has Covid and is currently intubated in the ICU. Things are not looking good but I came here to give you all some information. Have you noticed how all the NBA players who got it had mild symptoms and got over it in 2 weeks. That is because they are in top physical shape. The way this Virus works is deadly to people with health issues. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or are considered obese do what ever you can to not catch this. If you have any combination of these issues you are way less likely to survive this. We can not go by other places like China and Japans data when dealing with this virus. Americans are WAY more unhealthy than places like that. It will hit us a lot harder than them. That with the people not taking this seriously will make this virus hit us much harder than people will realize until it is too late.

That’s awful, I feel really sad hearing what you and your mother are going through. Feel so powerless against this virus. Thank you for taking the time to try and give us all a heads up, I do hope it helps others avoid getting it by taking it more seriously. I’ve been really worried about my mother catching it (she also would be a vulnerable person against this) and also whether this virus will be even more deadly in the US due to health factors (obesity, diabetes, etc) along with the organizational and health care issues.

You and your mother, take good care

Report: Trump administration ended a pandemic early-warning program last year

Just months before the coronavirus outbreak began, the administration ended a $200m early-warning program for infectious disease, the Los Angeles Times reports. The program was designed to help scientists in China and other nations monitor and respond to disease threats.

From the LA Times:

The project, launched by the U.S. Agency for International Development in 2009, identified 1,200 different viruses that had the potential to erupt into pandemics, including more than 160 novel coronaviruses. The initiative, called PREDICT, also trained and supported staff in 60 foreign laboratories — including the Wuhan lab that identified 2019-nCoV, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Field work ceased when the funding ran out in September, and organizations that worked on the PREDICT program laid off dozens of scientists and analysts, said Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, a key player in the program.

On Wednesday, USAID granted an emergency extension to the program, issuing $2.26 million over the next six months to send experts who will help foreign labs squelch the pandemic. But program leaders say the funding will do little to further the initiative’s original mission.

and quite frankly there are too many stories and incidents of neglect that I can't even be bothered to both read and post them for everyone. It's full on buffoonery going on with this administration.

tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands will die because of the incompetence. Economic disaster all around. Recovery period in the YEARS. Retirement money GONE

This is what we are in for.
