If I'm the Knicks, of try to resign KOQ right now, insurance against Kanter asking too much. I love his game, old skool Knicks grittty, plus soft hands and a good passer. I don't understand everyone wanting to get rid of him. If i can lock, him up for a decent deal, I'd extend him now.

No problem with that..... thing is if we do that we absolutely have to move Noah and Willy... we can't have 4 starting caliber centers on the team takin up most of the cap

I would trade KOQ for best offer. He is fools gold. Never plays well against good teams.Has some good games , teases you and then sucks. Backup at best, taking minutes away from Willy who has a much higher ceiling and lower salary.

Lock him up for what though? $5m per? Sure. $10m per? No way

I'm not sure at what price, but they should have the conversation.
Per36,, he's at 13/13 with 4.5 assists and 2.3 blocks. Is that worth $10mm? Maybe.
Kanter is at 19.5/14.5 with 2 assists and 0.7 blks. Is that worth $20mm?

You make sense- KOQ fumbles when overused but is high level in small doses- and that's a big value on a real team.

If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

KOQ is worthless against bigger stronger players. His defense isn't great there's more to playing center than rebounding and points. He benefits from teams not focusing on him.

Yeah guys seem to still want to start Willy... Noah can still play but we can't bench KOQ or Kanter for him cuz of their play.

Yeah guys defense isn't great. He just averages 2.5 blocks per 36... He's also a good passer. His beard would make your granny give him some hot cider

Eh...here's the thing. If you think Hernangomez has any kind of potential, you trade O'Quinn now and its an easy decision, because you are selling high on his value.

This situation to me is clear. You have to bit the bullet on Noah's contract. Keep him around and play him as a third center or if you need him, but don't feel compelled to force him into minutes, because he's untradeable with his contract either way.

Then the question is what you think about Hernangomez. This isn't exactly a clear situation to fans, because we have seen so little of him this year. But remember Hernangomez is 23 and Kanter is 25. Kanter is way, way ahead of Hernangomez as a player and isn't much older. To me its clear that it makes sense for us to have Kanter for the long haul. This is a guy who is a leader, runs the floor, plays hard, plays hurt, is actually a pretty nifty scorer in the post. In the old NBA he'd be a real all star. In this NBA I think he still is a really valuable player because he does run the floor and he can be a matchup weapon. The best thing would be to give Hernangomez O'Quinn's minutes to develop behind him and then by the offseason, you've either brought his trade value up or you can see whether he can slot in for Kanter.

Any idea why the team's net rating is about 10 points better with KOQ than Kanter on the court?

mid level is $8.5mm and I would consider KOQ an excellent MLE signing. "No way" seems a little rough. I think it depends on who gets moved and who stays.

I think KOQ's best value to us to get a late first we can use

Yeah he's as good a player as you can get for the MLE or even slightly higher (if we have to give him an incentive not to sign elsewhere).

2.1 blocks per 36 and also averages 3.1 TOs so that kind of erases the value of those blocks

Not if you have 4.4 assist per 36. If a front court player can have even a 1:1 assist turnover ratio, that's good. Anything beyond that is surplus value.

See, I wouldn't. Even at $5mm per, which we're not gonna get him at btw -- I just feel we can get an even better player (a more impactful player) for less, prob. for the minimum. I keep saying Khem Birch -- I understand Orlando has him locked up for the time being but I bet they cut bait with him at some point -- here's a guy that will cost a fraction of what O'Quinn will wind up getting and I honestly think he'd be a more impactful player. Even better rim protector (and O'Quinn's pretty good here; this guy's even better--Birch is a specialist-type shot-blocker), a similar rebounder (Birch might be better here too), even more agile/athletic, younger, and a better offensive player (not a wide gap here but I think Birch could give us more in the post than O'Quinn could--O'Quinn has virtually zero post game). I think Birch would be better in the O'Quinn role than O'Quinn at an inflated price. And if it ain't Birch, let's see what else we can come up with in the G-League, late in the draft, etc. (Christian Wood is playing well in the G-league and has been for some time now. Jaren Jackson Jr. in the draft?). That's how I'd love for them to look at stuff now. Be smart with the money. I mean we have too. Look for cost-effective improvements. These alternatives are out there.

To what end to you extend KOQ? I don't like him as a player. Very good passer and rebounder in traffic. Gets blocks against second stringers.

Awful PnR defender and often just sits in the paint, and thus extra rebounds and blocked shots.

Always hesitates when completely wide open on offense when he should shoot immediately. Makes bonehead plays both offensively and defensively that breaks momentum.

Cannot defend stretch offensive players. Is not a stretch player himself out to 3. Is an undersized 5 and a slow 4.

To what end do you extend KOQ? To stay mediocre? To trade him later? What's his replacement opportunity cost?

For me, do I see him as a long term piece on a deep playoff team? No. 9th man on a cost controlled contract for a playoff team? Yes. That's it.

What is the goal if we don't keep him? Is the plan to tank? The only time we consistently outscore opponents is with him in.
I'd re-sign KOQ now
