Turkey's state-run news agency says prosecutors are seeking more than four years in prison for NBA player Enes Kanter on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Anadolu Agency says an indictment prepared by the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office accuses the New York Knicks player of insulting the president in a series of tweets he posted in May and June 2016.

Then it wouldn't be America. But gov has been working on being an indirect dictatorship for years now.

Insane. I wonder if he could be extradited. I doubt the U.S. would cooperate with that. Dude could never go back home. Sounds like a movie

he would be imprisoned the minute he landed in Turkey. They blackout Knick games (like they did OKC) so nobody can watch Enes play.

from Wiki

Kanter was born in Switzerland to Turkish parents who later returned to their homeland. Since immigrating to the United States, Kanter has become a supporter of the Hizmet Movement of Fethullah Gülen, a "persona non grata" in Turkey. After the failed 2016 coup d'état attempt, Kanter heavily criticised Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Twitter, leading to the cancellation of his account in Turkey. Soon after the coup attempt in July, his father and his family publicly disowned him due to his political views and his support for Gülen, imploring him to change his surname, on August 8. Kanter stated that he loves Gülen "more than his family", informally changing his name to Enes Gülen.[38] Nevertheless, his father was still dismissed from his university position a few weeks later, via the government decree numbered 272 on September 1, as part of 2016–17 Turkish purges.[39][40][41]

On May 20, 2017, Kanter's passport was cancelled by the Turkish embassy, purportedly due to his political views.[42][43] Due to this, he was temporarily stranded in Romania, but later allowed to fly to London.[44][45] Six days after the cancellation of his passport, the Turkish government issued an arrest warrant for Kanter, accusing him of being a member of a "terror group".[46] Turkey said that charged citizens who fail come to Turkey during September of 2017 face revocation of citizenship; in September 2017, Kanter described himself as stateless.[47] According to Sports Illustrated, "Although Kanter might dismiss the Turkish arrest warrant as toothless, he faces the more impactful problem of being a man without a country."[48]

Kanter's younger brother, Kerem, played for the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay from 2014 to 2017.[49] After graduating from UW–Green Bay in 2017, he transferred to Xavier University of Cincinnati under the NCAA's graduate transfer rule.[50]

"You heard"? This the "Word on the street"? Takes just a few seconds to look it up.
He had a Turkish passport. Not a Swiss. He was born in Switzerland but what does that mean? That U.S. rules apply globally? Of course not.
Nothing in anything read (google it) says "Dual citizenship". This is a guy as he is quoted as saying he is without a country. Because he will be persecuted he should get a faster track to be a U.S. Citizen as some form of "Escape persecution". Pretty well documented. Trump is buddies with this Turkish President so maybe he goes missing in the night and lands in Istanbul. Remember this dude when he visted the U.S. had his security detail actually engage physically with protesters in Washington. Very uncool btw. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/19/turkey-president-erdogan-trump-said-sorry-about-dc-violence-involving-turkish-bodyguards.html Trump is a wuss. Those goons had no right to lay a finger on anyone on U.S. soil. Trump then apologizes?
As for Enes political views he obviously does not have the same rights as those here in the U.S.. Or at least while we have the 1st amendment. Seems we take that forgranted but have no problem backing the 2nd amendment. Enes should be worried as this government is not as sympathetic as previously.

So if he is sent off, does his contract still stick to our cap? This is why CEO's back both candidates. You sometimes need a favor.

Trump looks up to the Turkish dictator. Thinks he's cool.

It's not crazy to see this country is heading in that direction.

right, and since the U S came to his rescue when they cancel his passport, and he has no intentions of ever going back there, why is this even public.

He does seem to really like his dictators. Erdogan, Putin and all.
But for Enes' sake I hope he has enough decency left to not pull a complete douchebag move like that.

A bit of background on this.
Because they are trying him in absentia and want to make an example. Best to do it with an high profile person like Enes.
Erdogan tried to have Gulen extradited after he blamed him for a failed coup. http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/11/politics/turkey-us-fethullah-gulen-ultimatum/index.html It is rumored there was none but Erdogan labeled it as such so he could crack down domestically (with force) on his political opponents. This is scary stuff but since its "Turkey" most of us don't care about it.
Enes spoke out about it. His family lives in Turkey and its unknown if they support his views but if they did not "Disown" them they might have been persecuted themselves. The family might not been able to immigrate here.
Trump likes Erdogan. Trump has demonstrated desire to have absolute powers. He is a long way from getting it but he is trying. Locking up Hilary, his political opponent for no reason other than to elevate his view is something we don't do in this country.

WHy is it public you ask knicks1248? why do you even have to ask?

I hope the US govt allows him to permanently immigrate and become a US citizen. And hopefully he can bring his parents here as well, because they'd be at the mercy of the dictator if only he was allowed immigration.

What a weakling! dictators and despots are so insecure and thin skinned no matter how much power they accumulate, then surround themselves with morons and cowards who are too scared to tell them they're being a d**k
