I've had a hard time understanding the value of contracts since the successive leaps in cap space.

Embiid was absolutely incredible in his 31 games. But his injury/repair history is tough to ignore
What's insane here is that he has NEVER cracked 30 mins in an NBA game. (had a few games where he was within seconds of 30)

In terms of precedence: Ilgauskas played 5 games in 1998-1999 (50-game shortened season), sat out 1999-2000, then played 24 games in 2000-2001. After that, he had one year of 62 games, then averaged 79 games over the next 5 years. He ultimately made 2 all-star games in the process.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's Greg Oden, whose body broke down...

At least the Sixers have some protection here.

great call on big Z. He had a terrible stretch. One caveat that big Z had that Embiid has not, Ilgauskas played 82 games his rookie season and about 30 minutes per. He showed at least once he was capable of a long durable stretch. Embiid was hurt in college also! I mean I get his talent level but this is tough one. Trust the process

The five-year, $146.5 million contract of Joel Embiid with the Philadelphia 76ers is essentially guaranteed unless he suffers a catastrophic injury.

The current figure is based upon the NBA's latest cap projections for the 18-19 season.

Across each of the final four seasons of the extension, ending with the 2022-23 season, the 76ers could waive Embiid for a financial benefit if he's lost because of a contractually agreed upon injury that causes him to miss 25 or more regular-season games and if he plays less than 1,650 minutes.

The only injuries that are included are Embiid's feet and back. The 76ers would be unable to waive him if he suffered a different type of injury.

If Embiid were to meet that criteria and the 76ers released him, he would receive $84.2 million of his full contract after the 18-19 season, $98.2 million after 19-20, $113.3 million after 20-21 and $129.4 million after 21-22.

If Embiid plays a minimum of 1,650 regular-season minutes in three consecutive years during the extension, or three out of four including the 2017-18 season, those benchmarks would eliminate the possibility of a reduction in the contract.

Embiid missed the first two seasons of his career but was one of the NBA's best players in 31 games last season.

If Embiid blows his ankles out this year and never plays again Phil is paying over $80mm.

I played sports for a long time. I hope Embiid bounces back. Never want to see a guy suffer through his body failing, even if its a division rival. But damn Im glad this isnt the Knicks.

Phili drafted a super talented guy with a bad injury. Now 3 years later he's still super talented with and injuries and that talent is costly to retain. The got exactly what they drafted for!

Knicks are going to be forced to pay Porzingis this as well. I know Porzingis hasn't had the injury issues Embid has but he isn't anywhere near the player Embid is either. He is probably the 2nd best Center in the NBA
