I love Hez. Completely wasted in Orlando. I'd sweeten the pot for him as a longer term solution for us.

McDermott reminds me of JJ Reddick. Early in his career Reddick could score but he could not get any run because his defense was terrible. Reddick spent about 4-5 years before his defense got to the level were he could consistently be put on the court. If McDermott can improve his defense, he will be a very good player because he is an awesome offensive talent.

He looks good in the youtube vids, so I can understand why the Bulls were impressed enough to trade two first for him, but he just hasn't been a good player. Love his jumper, just can't seem to be an effective player at this point. Still, lets evaluate him over the next few months and go from there

he's actually way more athletic than I thought. I thought he was just a shooter before we got him. His problems on d can't be his athleticism. Is his lateral quickness that bad? Maybe it's just his IQ

Korver? Wally z?

I was going to say Korver...forgot about Wally.

Korver has had his moments...If McDermott could become a player like KK in short spurts during a game, I could live with it. Still need to see an effort on D, though, from him AND Kanter.

I'd take a younger Korver over both those cats

You sure? Wally was a good, well-rounded scorer before injuries killed him.
If MCdermott is close to Wally or Korver as a player the Knics did great on ths deal.

But he's not, and we all know it..

Yea for bad defensive players, 25 is a big year, again remember THjr was a terrible defender. Now average and hard to take off the court. The same can be said for Doug he is more athletic then people realize. He’ll never be on a all defense team but he can become below average to average and with his offensive skill set he would be hard not to play.

Again hes only 25 and defense can be learned, regardless the guy can really score and can also play a stretch 4. He’s a great transition player as well.

One can only wait and see which is exciting !!!

This is why I have to say that Perry and Mills did pretty much what they said, which was get 25 or younger players. They can focus on trying to coach them up and develop them. There IS talent there to be worked with. That's the thing that has to be acknowledged. Kanter and McDermott do have talent and the key of course is getting them to the point where they aren't such liabilities on D. I have to imagine that they have enough physical talent to at least be close to average on D if they put in the work and have the desire to make the effort on D.

I'm not that high on McBuckets. His advanced stats have been terrible so far. But he does have an elite NBA skill and the beginnings of some other skills too. This will be his moment.

To be honest, I'm not sure we need to sweeten the pot. The Magic already have Terrence Ross and went out of their way to pursue Jonathan Simmons this offseason, which might be something of a signal that they are willing to move on from Hezonja. We might need a little cash to grease the wheels but I think the Magic would be cool getting McDermott as an expiring contract.

Yes. So, let's not give him Hardaway dollars. But, I think Orlando mishandled him, or he came over too early. His upside is still there. He is like a Rubio, playing pro ball since he was 14 or so.

Indeed, but has an extra year or two on his rookie contract, where as McDermott is coming up for free agency

He's averaged around 9 points a game at a good shooting percentage.
He was a 11th pick in the draft.
I don't think that's a bust.
I think he hasn't acheiveed the level he could have.

He will be in the league for a while, in my opinion.
There's still a small chance he could become a really good sniper like Kyle Korver or someone like that.

I'd be happy if he was Steve Novak, but as a SF instead of PF

Im in this boat. He's playing a position for a team thats up for grabs. Like KOQ did last year he needs to come in and play well enough that the coaching staff simply has to run the guy out there. Most of the guys we brought back or drafted are defensive guys. You need some scoring. There's a role here to be won. Will it be McBuckets? Kuz? Beas?

I'm cautiously optimistic with Doug.

He has played behind the likes of Butler/Wade in Chicago and with ball dominant PG's in Rose, Rondo and Westbrook.

Watching his film he is a guy that appears to excel via catch/shoot and off motion cuts...plus I think he has some post-up game.

If we can run a unselfish..uptempo..motion type offense Doug might excel a bit.

Personally I prefer Doug starting at SF over likes of Lance, Beasley or Kuz and not sure I like Timmy/Lee (Sg/Sf) combo option -- would rather see if Doug can play well given his 25 year age..plus potential FA situation.
