I think the criteria is the KNicks need to stop making bad trades with first round picks. A platitude suggesting any first round pick should be kept off the table no matter what the is just making the same mistakes in the reverse direction.

There are any # of scenarios I would favor the Knicks trading a protected first. There is a number of scenarios I would favor trading an unprotected first.

It's all about the specifics, not a generalization.

Robert Covington would be a great pick up because he makes the VET MIN for 2 more seasons and would then be a RFA after I believe
In Philly, there are some solid pieces on many teams, I really also like TJ Mcconnell as a 3rd string PG that is on the Sixers
Maybe Grant (though we no longer have his brother) or sharp shooter Hollis Thompson as well
Considering we have the 1.5m to under 1.6m trade exemption from the Rose/Bulls swap, it would be a great pick up
Highly doubt we can acquire Timothe Luwawu
I would not want to give up a 1st rounder but If we had to do so, maybe acquiring back multiple 2nd rounders would not be a horrible package (but not for this summers 1st rounder and protected of course)
We could also use cash for incentives and Sixers have so many future draft picks and limitted roster spots, so we might be able to actually get back better "value" in terms of multiple 2nd rounders and a CHEAP contract/shooter in Covington, maybe with other players/draft rights

We really need a PG or at least a combo G
Which players can we sign to 2years or more? Bulls still have early bird rights on Dwiwiddie though they rescinded him like we had on Galloway
There could be teams that could make a play for him and some of these players would probably push to have a 1 and 1 deal if vet min (player option) or 1year deal..
While Randle and some other less chased talents could be players at the vet min (Stockton's son is a solid smart player as well)

Whether it is

Spencer Dwinwiddie *just a very good player on BOTH ENDS on BOTH PG/SG Combo guards with HIGH BB IQ*

Bryce Cotton - just a SOLID PLAYER that can shoot/penetrate/defend/facilitate

Tony Douglas played very well last season and has improved his ability to penetrate/facilitate/ and got his shot back since he lossed it after his shoulder surgery after his rookie year

Randle
Our Summer League PG *think he is a YOUNG Jennings but a LEGIT PG in Randle with a PG mentality and capable of being a defensive PG
Like Jennings, many people do not realize he is around 170% pounds and Randle is about 160-170pds as well..
Also Ish Smith at 6m for a 3year contract is GREAT for Ish Smith, with the way the NBA/contracts are

Undrafted combo guards and PG's/COMBO guards from previous drafts
or Cat Barber/Kay Fielder (for a poor mans Isiah Thomas)if possible

Donald Sloan

Kyle O Quin
I think his salary makes O Quin a valuable asset with the players/talent acquired this summer
His ability to pass(rebound) POST/MID RANGE and 3pt shot will be much improved with his hustle/box outs
We had a horrible team last year that did not work

Trading O Quin while Anthony Tolliver is making 10m per year for 2 years is a very bad move considering his value could multiply

Jabari Brown *ex Laker* I think having a combo guard is essential in todays NBA that could penetrate and finish through contact/shoot/facilitate

Markel Brown

Lance Stephenson
? would we be able to acquire him with the vet min?
*coming home would fit the trend that players have been going with*

PJ Hairston could have been smoke screens but PJ said he would have taken him if he was available and now he is a UFA with 2year EXP without much contributions on 2 teams but have had some decent games b4 in limited minutes

Also I think we should sign at least one of the 2 in

Thanasis or Summers, they both have NBA bodies and with our changes to our roster they would both FIT, Justin Holiday might be out of our range to keep though we have his early bird rights (may not be enough)
not so sure about JP TokoTo (he is much smaller than Summers and Thanasis

Alonzo Gee

Surprised Alonzo Gee is still a UFA, not sure if have the ability to sign him though
Matt Barnes would have been a great pick up at 2year 6m per year *on the Kings now, he would fit the mold of our 90's Knicks but also still a 3pt specialist/good cuts/as well has his DEFENSE
Especially to stick it to Fisher and I think he can still contribute on both ends and "FITS the 90's Knicks"

Jakarr Sampson

Jeff Adrian

Thomas Robinson/David Lee

Josh Smith

D League for Briggs, Christian Wood would have been a nice player for his upside with KP's length together but oh well..
Eric Green/Nate Walters are 2 other favorites of BRIGGS and both could SHOOT

Jeff Taylor/Dewayne Dedmon were 2 of my "steals to have on our bench"

Jeff Taylor (think he signed a contract to play in Russia or Euro somewhere, not 100% sure though) would have been a solid pickup IMO as well and Dewayned Dedmon signing a 2year 6m total deal with Spurs
Dedmon could provide similar contributions that Biyombo got but at a fraction of the cost, a mobile/athletic/shot blocking/rebounding/ RUNNING CENTER with energy/hustle, the Chris Anderson type *but young*
Chris Anderson is joining Lebron James in Cleveland

As for Plumlee, his oldest brother is making 52m in 4years, Mason Plumlee will likely be making north of that next year along with a MAX for CJ McCollum, so a 3year deal at the vet min is a solid investment
Currently IMO, both Portland and Bucks *probably will take another 1-2 seasons with Thon Maker* are teams that can match up with GS
Portland gave out a lot of contracts already and not so sure if they will want to shell out more to keep Mason Plumlee or just find a replacement instead
Wonder what kind of money Tyler Zellar will be making after Miles Plumlee contract...

After watching what Orlando paid for Biyombo and then releasing Dedmon to go with the contracts players got this summer, he surely will be motivated
If we want to roll the dice/gamble a bit, though not really a gamble since it would be a vet min deal is for Larry Sanders, especially if we can sign him to a 2year vet min deal/team option on 2nd so he can prove himself....

I think Kevin Serephin is capable of playing a similar role, I hope we do not resign Lou Amundson and would rather take back STAT on a 1year deal
Josh Smith for vet min?

While he is a different player David Lee would FIT and another player would be Thomas Robinson, though we are stacked in the PF position

Also had we NOT drafted CleAnthony Early and drafted Jovic instead, WOW,

some shooters left?

Trade Targets

would like to keep our 1st rounders and would prefer using cash and future 2nd rounders that, however, if we do use 1st rounder would try to get back 2nd rounders back like with Philly...

Covington *with our trade exemption, maybe Hollis Thompson/Tj Mcconnell, and if we use a 1st rounder (protected and not this upcoming summers in 2017), we get back multiple 2nd rounders maybe we can rob em, use a 1st rounder to get back ALL of our 2nd rounders we have traded to Philly and acquire some more*

Will Barton
Shelvin Mack

Shabazz Muhammadd and Gorgui Dieng? *to be our future Center, as we do not have a LEGIT backup Center to Noah* though both Shabazz and Dieng will be RFA next summer

IF he has a good season or bad season etc? What to do with Rose, it seems like Westbrook will be our #1 target with the other 29 teams
Do we keep Rose? At what price? How many years? If Rose has a great year, can we trade for Westbrook with Rose? which would allow us to have the FULL MLE

If Westbrook is not available, and we decide Rose isn't worth the possible injury, just saying maybe if we can get a Jrue Holiday/Brandon Knight or Bledsoe combo instead
Lets not forget that we will not have the Bi Annual Exemption to use next year, we can only have the FULL MLE if we resign Rose and can resign Justin Holiday with early bird rights like we did with Lance Thomas..

For the BLOOD BROTHERS in the League
Wonder what type of contracts both Holidays and Millsaps will be making next summer?

Jrue Holiday *if we miss out on Westbrook, I think acquiring previous max contracts like Eric Bledsoe/Brandon Knight, in the 15m range, capable of signing 2 such players* etc would have more bang for the Buck, would not mind uniting both Holidays *especially if we do not need to overpay for him*

Jrue Holiday
Justin Holiday

Paul Millsap
Elijah Millsap

Plumlee's
Miles oldest
Mason ? Marshall Plumlee RFA next summer?

Greek Freaks
Thanasis *would like to use him as bait and time his contract to lineup when Giannes will be a UFA after he signs his first max deal (likely after 2020, hopefully a 4year max deal with a player option after 3rd year and I think he can develop just as Trevor Ariza improved when he went to the Lakers*

Giannes
YOUNG G FREAK *youngest one*

Robin/Brook Lopez

Tyler/Cody Zellar

Morris (previously Suns) brothers

Harrison brothers Kentucky

are there any more brothers I am missing?

Will CA OPT out of his final year of the contract, feeling underpaid with the contracts he currently sees and will be seeing more off?
This will be our DWade drama if this happens..

After this upcoming season, he only has 1 more season, with next be a player option...

CA is currently 32 and born in May

33

34

*could be UFA with player option*

I believe this is part of the reason that CA wanted to stay a Knick, knowing Dolan loves him like he had with Allan Houston (despite Sprewell having much more responsibility and deserved more than H20)
I think Phil Jackson if he commits to his full contract will still in command though Dolan can always step in and force an early retirement....
I would like to acquire Giannes by then, maybe Anthony Davis as well (talk about that length)

but Noah/Lee/Lance Thomas and all the contracts we just signed would be expired
While Rose *if we resign him* along with *Westbrook if we sign him next summer unless we trade for him with Rose and draft picks *will also finish their contracts*

By then, it could be KP's team if he is fully developed with the leadership we surrounded him with this summer
Will the cap be at 200m? by then?

Rose has made it no secret that he wants to get paid next summer, so if Westbrook signs, Im guessing Rose will look for a bigger payday elsewhere. Also might not want to play second fiddle to Westbrook, and there is also Jennings to consider. The best outcome we could have IMO is to play well enough next season for Westbrook to believe that all this team needs is him. Westbrook might prefer to meet Durant in the finals than a conference final, if he doesn't believe OKC can get past GS. KP's possible emergence next season would be a great sales pitch.

So Pompey (who I like) has now established that Embiid can dunk the ball.

Durability is his issue.

They do have a logjam of 5s, though, because I really don't think that Noel is a PF.
