Despite being still under contract I don't view Jose and AA as being the starting backcourt any longer. AA lost his job and Jose is never going to be the starter again IMO. This is about Jerian and Wroten and whoever else Phil brings in. I can't see JH not wanting younger and more dynamic guards and wings. I fully expect AA to opt out since he can secure of himself more money and possibly a better role with another team. At least that how I think he and his agent will view things.

Jose is super efficient at PnR ... not so sure that JG gets the job from him that easily.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

I was also thinking with JH in place now that AA may have a bigger role on this team.

good point. Hopefully if AA opts in, JH will use him as a 3 point specialist. He is a very efficient 3 point shooter.

I thought Kevin Seraphin had a 1 year contract and was now a UFA?

Yes...he is. Langston Galoway and Early are RFAs.

Jose IMO would be better off the bench. I think JH realizes that. If you are moving toward more uptempo and driving to the hoop, then Jose is not really that guy. Jose is great as a PnR guard that will look to stop and take the midrange shot. He's also a great 3pt outlet, so he'll have a role on the team, but I think his lack of D and ability to push will make him better off the bench behind the young guards. Remember how good Gallo and Grant looked early on when they were aggressive. That's the style they are best at and if JH is true to form then he'll want that.

AA and calderon both will be gone. AA will sign elsewhere and calderon no longer has a role with this team.

Knicks looking to be quicker and more aggressive both ends of the floor with the pg position. Not good for caleron..

I'd love to see something like this for the completed 15-man:

5 - Lopez
4 - Porzingis
3 - Melo
2 - Solomon Hill or PJ Hairston
1 - Jerryd Bayless or Seth Curry
---------------------
4/5 - Willy Hernangomez
4 - Justin Harper or Khem Birch/Octavius Ellis
2/3 - Terrico White
2/1 - Wroten
1/2 - Grant
---------------------
5 - Jordan Bachynski
4 - O'Quinn
2 - Jabari Brown or Thanasis Antetokounmpo
1 - Cat Barber/Demetrius Jackson, Yogi Ferrell/Kay Felder/Marcus Paige/Gary Payton II or sign Corey Walden
1 - Calderon

I'm assuming AA will opt out; D-Will maybe/maybe not. Not going overboard to sign any of the tier 1 FAs out there. I'd like to see a more conservative approach this summer (next summer's when I'd look to make more of a splash). Meanwhile, I think there's real good value dropping down a tier or 2 in FA. That's where I'd like to see us look for our starting backcourt upgrades. Then I see excellent value sifting through the league minimum pool. I think 6'10" 230 Justin Harper (a slightly bigger/better version of Chris Copeland imo) would be an excellent stretch 4 option to slide in next to Willy on that 2nd unit. Or we could go with an athletic/hustle/offensive rebounder/shot-blocker next to Willy (Khem Birch/Octavius Ellis - summer league invitee with a chance to make the club), OR we go real big and elevate Jordan Bachynski to play next to Willy -- any of these types of players would complement Willy's post game nicely. Terrico White's an athletic, physical big guard that had an excellent year in the DL--he can shoot/score the ball and he'd come for the minimum... Bachynski, Jabari Brown/TA--same deal--quality young role players with upside that complement our starters and other players. All would come for the minimum. In the draft I'd love to pick up one potential lead guard prospect with upside -- I've got Cat Barber/Demetrius Jackson as possible 1st rounders (do we try to trade into the 1st round to ensure having a legit shot at one of these guys? Now you're talking dealing Grant along with other assets), then Yogi Ferrell/Kay Felder/Marcus Paige/Gary Payton II as probable 2nd rounders/undrafted prospects we'd have a better shot at. Payton's kid is intriguing -- his D is standout and NBA-ready and I think his jumper will come along eventually. Reminds me of Avery Bradley/smaller version of Tony Wroten (with even better D). If we either can't deal ourselves in or choose not to target a guard in the draft, Corey Walden from the DL is a real nice under-the-radar guard I'd like to see us consider--he's a better all-around version of Langston Galloway imo.. I like that we could go with either offense or defense at some of these positions depending on whoever else we lined up at other spots (we could go with more perimeter offense next to Willy with Justin Harper or more defense with Birch/Ellis; if we were lucky enough to score an offensive-minded guard like Cat Barber, Jackson, Yogi Ferrell or Marcus Paige, then maybe TA makes sense with size and D at the 2. Or maybe the opposite -- say we picked up Gary Payton or Corey Walden, then maybe Jabari Brown might make more sense for his scoring prowess, etc..). I'd prefer not to stretch Calderon -- let's carry him one more year and then be done with him for good.

G Bryn Forbes(undrafted)

I like that roster. I can get behind that. My only concerns would be (1) the fairly substantial salary we'd be adding with Crabbe, Curry, Willy G and LT (esp. Crabbe--not sure if we couldn't get a similar or better player than Crabbe in the long run for much cheaper) and how that affects our future cap situation and ability to add a top FA either in 2017 or 2018 and (2) I see you're adding 3 total picks, 1 1st and 2 2nd rounders, while still retaining Grant on the roster (Grant, to me, is our biggest trade asset along with Willy). Walk me though how we get those 3 picks. I mean with no pick of our own in either round, I'd be very happy if we came away with one pick, most likely a 2nd rounder (hopefully a high 2) and I can see that one pick costing a premium (i.e. all our cash, a future 2). I think to crack the 1st round, you're talking trading Grant (poor year for the most part but he finished strong and still has upside/trade value) and/or Willy (I'd really like to keep Willy if we can). I wonder how much value O'Quinn has.

I was absolutely expecting AA to opt out if Rambis got the full time gig and now i'm hoping he opts out because Hornacek is known as a players coach and runs an offense that players like to play in so i'm hoping AA doesn't change his mind. Hornacek needs to make sure he lets it be known to AA that he'll be coming off the bench if he's a Knick next season.

If we drafted Bryn Forbes and Gbinjie signed Rondo to a 2 year deal with Crabbe--that would suffice.

So adding

Crabbe
Rondo
Gbinjie
Forbes
Branden Bass

If Derrick Jones slides out of the draft--Id like to sign him to a 2 year deal but put him in Westchester for the year--kind of getting a pick for next year kind of thing. The 15th guy doesnt play anyway--if I get Gbinjie and Forbes--I want them to get time even if its for injury or blowouts situational etc.. If I get Crabbe and Forbes I can bypass Curry and stick with Rondo(who is much easier to get as UFA)

Add Crabbe, Bazemore, or Fournier at 4/60 and Dellavedova at 4/24. Draft Gbinije with a 2nd rounder. Shooters and defenders at the back court positions. Dellavedova and Grant are the perfect mix at PG.

Delladova? Were already one of the slowest teams in the NBA and Clev is not going to let him got for 6mm. Bazemore Im completely off were not getting Fournier.

Yeah then we'd have our shooter in Crabbe to play next to Rondo and a couple of rookie guards who can shoot it in Gbinje and Forbes.
