It's a no brainer: Extend the kid cheaply. He's going to play well for us. If we need to trade him, that deal is so moveable.

Another small thing to consider -- I betcha the kid settles down and plays better once that option's picked up. He wouldn't have to worry about his immediate future anymore--it would allow him to just concentrate on playing ball, getting better and helping this team. I'm actually pleasantly surprised Shump's handling it well, being in limbo with his situation. Pick up the option and put the kid's mind at easy. It's a sound investment based on his ability and potential and for the amount of money we're talking about here.

if they dont pick it up he's an RFA at the end of the year? Or can they pick it up after the season?

I guess they have their reasons. Hopefully Shane stays focused and doesn't let this affect him. Having Shumpert going through a similar situation should help him. Both of these young men need to stay focused and perform. The better they play the better their financial future becomes. Incentive to keep bringing it.

I had seen this yesterday, was hoping his solid outing last night would sway some opinions. The risk is about as minimal as it gets by picking up the option.

This is just stupid- the cap hold for a minimum player is $500,000, so by not picking up Larkin's option, we're only saving $1.2mil. Plus, worst comes to the worst and we needed that $1.2mil, we could easily trade him.

By not picking up his option, it also lessens his trade value by the trade deadline- so even if he plays really well, teams wouldn't part with much because the could just sign him outright as a FA.

Cuz he's not that good. He's Cap Fodder.
Not personal, I like the kid. But Phil likes his teams big.
NObody will trade for him, he is filler. He might turn out to be a decent player but not in NY.

count me as another: yes, no brainer.

This is essentially his rookie year... he was injured last year. He was also one of the best players on the only good UMiami team that I can remember.

If he doesn't fit the mold -- fine -- but pick up the option and trade him while he still has the promise of "upside potential"

Good point.

A young PG with a cheap expiring contract for whom you would own earl bird rights isnt trade fodder?

The downside to this is he blows up and we lose a guy we could have had for less than $2mm. The NBA ALWAYS has a team willing to shell out cash for upside. ALWAYS. If Larkin shows he can impact the game someone will take a shot.

Whats puzzling to me about it is I would think we need cheap role players if we are going to add top heavy (expensive) players.

He may be small but it seems strange to limit our options on a sophmore PG.

I'm pretty sure we do but then some team is going to offer him $3mil per and we are going to lose him because we want to shed salary. Like we lost Lin & Cope
