Source: Yankees to trade Solarte for Chase Headley
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 1:15 PM

The Yankees are "close" to acquiring third baseman Chase Headley from the San Diego Padres for a package that would likely include Yangervis Solarte and pitcher Rafael DePaola, according to major league sources. The Padres would also send cash to New York in the deal, which is not done, but will likely be completed soon.

Headley, 30, is a free agent after this season, for which he is making $10.5 million. He enjoyed a breakout season in 2012, when he hit .286/.376/.498 with 31 homers and 115 RBI, but has regressed since, batting .229/.296/.355 this year, with seven home runs and 32 RBI.

Solarte started strong for the Yankees this year, but faded badly. The 27-year-old is batting .254 on the season. DePaola, 23, is pitching in the Florida State League.

Seriously? Solarte is putting up better #s now and is 4 years younger than Headley.
Each season, it's getting harder and harder to be a Yankees' fan. I wish these Steinbrenners would sell the team.

solarte is a career minor leaguer who the yankees signed for nothing. he had 2 good months but came back down to earth. headley had a mvp-type year a few years ago but has since been injury-riddled. the yankees are probably hoping he can take advantage of the short porch in left field since he's a switch hitter. great trade for the yanks.

What games are u watching? Solarte was terrible after the first 6 weeks of the season and was batting .143 over the last month. Headley is batting .298 over the last month with some rbi's. The Yanks needed some offemse and really didnt give uo too much. (not sure how highly rated the pitcher was but the yanks had a black hole at 3B)

after having season tickets and going to playoff games during all those runs I dont even know who's on the team anymore. Zero interest. Ive totally checked out of baseball. Tanaka was nice, but unless you like seeing Jeter's farewell tour there is nothing about that team worth tuning into. They are in Scot Layden mode.

Acquiring guys who we think will take advantage of the short porch hasn't been working.

The numbers on Headley suck, but he's a former all star that could recover to play beter. Solarte is 4A player and he hasn't hit anything in about 3 months. DePaula was highly touted going into the season, but I think he's stagnated and he's overaged. His stats since he moved to High A ball have stunk. HE has a live arm though.

Yanks have literally the worst farm system in baseball. They are very close to having $120mm plus in players who simply cant get or stay on the field because they are so old. I had 81 games for over 12 years. Now I dont even turn on the TV. I would rather play with the kids, guitar or watch my grass grow.

It is the Yankees in the 80s all over again.

Yeah, and these mega contracts are almost always disasters. Headley's probably going to play at an MVP level for these remaining 60 games and then get a disastrous mega contract from Cashman!

I can't believe you fish, you could sit through 13 years of knicks BS, but your turning your back on our beloved team.

IMO The absence of PED's has hurt the MLB and they don't even know it, Did you see the home run derby, fckng pathetic, one guy made it to the 3rd rnd by hitting 1 home run, real exciting.

The Al east is actually a super tight race, and although I don't watch many games, (maybe a inning here and there) i score watch like the dow jones.

Injuries have hurt this team just like the knicks, also our farm team isn't producing like it did in the 90's.

haha... not turning my back. Just waiting until its worth watching again. Its weird though.. I dont hate anything the Yankees have done, I just dont care. When Jeter got the first hit in the AS game I pumped my fist like it was 96 all over again. It was a nice slice of the past. I love Joe.. think he's a great manager. There is just nothing about that team that has me tuning in.

I understood not paying Cano. He's a postseason pansy and your not getting $250mm from the Yanks with his post season record. But getting McCann and Elsbury and Beltran told me everything I needed to know. Time for another hobby.

The current Yanks remind me of Howard Eisley, Shandon Anderson, Clarence Weatherspoon and Travis Knight. Just overpaid guys who are utterly uninteresting in every way.

Actually thought Solarte might have some potential.

Troubling stats for Headley, IMO. To me they point to PED usage.

Not the biggest of Baseball fans, but statically, this is more than just an anomaly. Reminds me somewhat of Brady Anderson,
Ken Caminiti, Luis Gonzalez, who all had their big home run years after 30, and played in the 90's and early 2000's.

Only difference is that Headley was 28 when he had his big year, which can be considered his "prime." However, the years before and after his big season,
especially the year after, where he had a similar # of plate appearances, are revealing.

Had 600+ at bats 4 times, and the 2012 numbers are too far beyond his average season to make me think there was nothing wrong.

Does the guy have back, rib, or shoulder problems? (JUST read that he has been taking injections for a back issue recently). These injuries can slow down a player.
Has he had back issues since he started playing?

AT ages 25-26, he was a pretty pedestrian player for a 3rd basemen who got to the plate over 600 times.

The Padres All Star SS was caught doing PEDs while Headley was in SD (2013 season), and there were rumors about Headley during and after his big season in 2012:

When I was younger I would watch baseball from beginning to end. Now I can't even get through an inning of it. It's gotten to the point where I don't even know who is who anymore.
