I assume this and the McCann signings mean that Cano hasn't moved from his ridiculous asking price and the team is moving on.
I believe it might be $153mm over 7 yrs. That's definitely on the high side but for a guy that's in his prime (I think he's only 30), a career .300 hitter or there abouts, 50+ SB potential, the way he can field, the fact that the move makes us stronger AND weakens Boston, etc.. it's not a bad move all considering.
Hopefully we're nowhere near being done. McCann and Ellsbury were much needed -- to make those moves count though, I'd like Cano AND Grandy back...
A little pissed to see that David Adams and Jayson Nix were both non-tendered (cut loose basically). I like the kid Adams -- yeah he fizzled out after a hot start but he can clearly handle the bat (real nice swing--guy definitely has a clue at the plate) and he can pick it all over the infield--I think he plays all 4 spots 3rd to 1st. Plays 'em all well too...I prefer Adams and Nix over this Brendan Ryan myself. Better ball players. Hopefully we can at least find a way to bring Adams back. You don't just jettison a halfway decent prospect like that..
With or w/o Kuroda, we need another big signing for the rotation. I like Matt Garza. Legit top-of-the-rotation guy that can hit 94-95 consistently. I prefer him over Erving Santana. Hopefully we finally get to see this Michael Pineda and at the top of his game...What a shot in the arm that'd be....We need legit help in the bullpen too. I'd bring back Logan as a lefty specialist. I know he has his hiccups along the way but he's tough on lefties and that's what you want. Not as high on Nathan to close as others are---I guess he's the obvious choice coming off the very good year but I dunno man -- he's 40 years old and nowhere near the same pitcher he used to be. Detroit's supposedly close to getting him anyway...Too bad we can't turn it over to D-Rob -- he's good but he just throws way too many pitches. Need someone that can economize & pitch 2-3 days in a row regularly. I actually like Chris Perez -- maybe not as a closer but as a late inning reliever in general (maybe to take over the Joba role). All the stuff last year with the weed is overblown -- dude didn't kill nobody. Ordered weed to the house and was a little outspoken against Cleveland fans and mgmt. Big deal...He can pitch -- saved nearly 30 on a team that won almost 95 games. We might be able to get him for a deal off all the shenanigans.
