Carmelo is our Ray Lewis. No matter what Carmelo Anthony delivers on the court, it will never satisfy people who prefer their athletes more squeaky clean. (That includes tatoos) This in not an indictment of any so-called "hater". It is a stone cold fact of fandom. We prefer players who reflect our values and perceptions of ourselves.

Shot selection must conform to the "makeable" shot. When you can create any shot in the manual, what is a "good" shot? A shot with only one man on you? An open look without a hand in your face? Help me out here.

Of course, I despise the end of quarters when he stalls with the ball in his hands. As Andrew notes, it is a selfish and predictable move that makes the other four players invisible. Make or miss, clear outs are not my personal preference unless the dudes name is Michael Jordan. Even Michael trusted the Jordanaires to take a big shot.

Carmelo is a flawed individual with a bad attitude and an ingrained ghetto accent. He has created a mask with his smile to conceal his intense competitive fire. Don't let it fool you. Carmelo wants to win more than anything. On Broadway, he senses anger would not play well with the people on celebrity row. So he assumes the role of entertainer and smiles. He DOES enjoy the game. He enjoys the game like a sniper enjoys picking off targets from 500 yards.

Make no mistake. Carmelo had clear intent to jump Keven Garnett at the Celtics team bus. Garnett would have not backed down. It would not have been pretty. Thuggish behavior? Absolutely. Can it be corrected? Maybe. Maybe not. Some dudes operate on a competitive edge that is impossible to understand if you never played ball on an asphalt court you had to fight to keep. Literally.

No matter how much he tries he will never sound intelligent enough to satisfy the people who prefer their heroes to recite the Queen's english. You can take the kid out of Baltimore, but you cannot take the Baltimore (or Brooklyn) out of the kid. His pronunciation is rough around the edges. Until further notice, or a speech tutorial, that is just the way it is.

All of this nonsense about listing Carmelo's strengths and weaknesses is just that. Nonsense. Every player in the NBA has strengths and weaknesses. The undercurrent related to Mr. Anthony is about more than productivity. It is deeply shaded by perception. Those perceptions, unfortunately, are also shaded by racial preferences. He makes too much money, he does not work hard enough, he is incapable of thinking fast enough, he has never won anything of significance and we gave up too much to acquire him. Unforgiven. For all time.

No matter what Carmelo Anthony achieves, it will never be enough. This, he already understands.

Papabear Says

1 How many times have Melo been arrested?
2 How many times have Melo go charged with drunk driving
3 How many times have Melo beat his wife?
4 How many games this season have Melo saved
5 How many times this season have Melo scored more than 20 points
6 How many game have Melo sacrificed his body and didn't get a call
7 If you went to the games you'd see the love for Melo
8 How do we have a shot for a championship with out him
9 Who does the majority of fans come to MSG to see.
10 Who is the leader and star of the Knicks?
11 Who goes to special events for Kids? Melo
12 Who donates money to different boys clubs a his college? Melo
13 Doe's Melo take steroids?? NO
14 Is it a crime for Melo to smile?
15 You speak of Melo waiting for Garnet at the bus. Well guess what? if Garnet would have done the same thing to Oakly Garnet would have been droped right there on the hard wood floor.

You can point out all of the bad things you want about the man. But without Melo this team don't go to far in the playoffs.
This blog topic to me and I'm talking about my opinion is for the birds because you can say what you want, pick out his flaws. THEN WHAT? He is still the best player we've had since Patrick Ewing. So I will say the good things about him and those who have the negative things to say guess what?? You can't change a thing about Melo.He is rich, Famous, and his own man. He will be who he is like it or not.The Alfa Leader of the Knicks

Strengths:

- Too strong for wing players to defend
- Too quick for big men to stay in front of
- Handful in the post
- Super quick release on jump shot
- Hard to keep off boards
- No fear in the 4th quarter

Weaknesses:

- Shot selection, prone to take heat check shots and get into dueling mode against Kobe, lebron, etc

- Composure when a call goes against him. I'd like to see him huddle his team up and tell them to focus when officials are screwing us vs being the leader of the complaining committee

- Understanding how to exploit when teams throw multiple defenders at him (much improved this season)

- Defense: much improved this season but I still feel like he doesn't take defense anywhere near as seriously as KG (middle linebacker role, forces everyone on team to give effort), Shane Battier (studying tendencies and shot charts of opponents), Lebron.

Up to this season it bugged the hell out of me that Melo had the ability to be first team all NBA for the same reasons that make him great on defense the same reason Artest used to be a great defender: Melo is a freakish blend of strength and quickness

It's a ridiculously demanding to expect your best scorer to also communicate and demand accountability on defense, guard the other team's best scorer and be a student of the game on defense but that's what guys like KG, Duncan, Kobe and Jordan did in their primes. Melo has the potential to be a legend like those guys. I'd love to see him do it. He seems to want to win badly enough where he'd do it.

I don't know if it's clicked in his head yet that it's going to take that level of commitment to beat a maniac like KG and co, to beat a tough as nails team in Chicago, another really well coached and tough defending Pacers team, and Lebron James hellbent on being one of the best ever.

This criticism of defense could also be applied to Amare as well. It takes an incredible level of dedication and work to get to where Amare and Melo are already at. So calling STAT and Melo lazy is..well..lazy.

It takes an almost insane, obsessive amount of dedication, love for the game, and intelligence to get to a Duncan/Kobe/Jordan level. Are STAT and Melo that crazy?

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

This is fundamentally why I get so pissed off at the posters that harp on the areas that Melo needs to improve upon. Is Melo a perfect player? No. Do we all have a firm handle on areas we wish he would improve upon? Yes. But I fail to see why people don't support him when he is clearly the best player the Knicks have had since before the Andrew Lang incident. When posters say things that essentially imply someone better is around the corner, it really chaps my ass because - for the most part - they didn't post here when the Knicks were bad #realtalk

Honestly, I think sprewell was a better player.. but that is just me.. so I don't see thing quite the way you do.. carmelo may not get much support because people don't view him with such high regards.. just look at the pro's and cons list... even with most on here being carmelo fans, the cons seem to outweigh the pro's... so it shouldn't be s surprise why there may be such a divide when it comes to this dude..

Uh...YEA, it's just you.

Carmelo gets a ton of support, do you even watch the games? I guess they're really chanting "L V P" Least Valuable Player when he steps to the free throw line.

There is only a divide with a disgruntled butt hurt vocal minority, because "The Trade" actually worked out.

I'm a fan, so I'll list weaknesses:

* Does not get back on d if he didn't get a call he wanted on offense
* Poor at end of quarters (almost always settles for contested 3's) -- This does not apply to ends of games
* At times forces his offense
* Unclear if competitive enough to drive team to championship

Im not a hater or supporter either. As Knick fan Im just waiting for him to do something interesting here that will provide a Knick memory that will last more than a week. Winning a playoff series would be a good start. While we are already MVPs and CHAMPS in some folks minds I find winning the big games to be even more enjoyable than dreaming of it.

PS: by big games I was not refering to the Olympics

I am a supporter, so I have no need to clinch to Dreams of average point guards taking over the nba like Godzilla or a 3rd wheel Euro scorer even sniffing Melo's jock strap. He is the best player the knicks have had in a looooooooooooong time and looking at where we are at right now,30-15 is better than a fiction 21-9 run. He deserves my support.

yes and in all that you said the point of the thread is to list both his strengths and his weaknesses.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

so you are not going to list his strengths and his weaknesses?

the exercise isn't meant to be grist for the mill it's meant to demonstrate intellectual honesty and create goodwill.

are you not interested in these things? nobody has yet to argue in this thread about anything pro or con about his game and his person so what is there to lose?

Strengths
Stroke/shot from midrange
Iso ability
Dribble-drive

Weaknesses
Hasn't done much in playoffs
Grammar could be better
Headband has to go

Patience with the rebuild, keep all the picks, no starphucks, and team-first attitude. Marinate a couple years and we're playing like the '72 team. Championship here we come!

i agree dk, this is a simple exercise.. as much as I have been called a hater, I had no problem listing both.. yet you get post like this, which just goes to show that those who complain about the so called "haters" seem to have very little interest in a balanced debate.... they are more about absolutes.... you don't like melo, you are a hater, you like him, you are a REAL fan... I find his post odd, bringing up players they say are getting too much attention around here, now that they are gone......

Mean-spirit is about the only thing you got right.

The only reason those two get mentioned is because they are held in the hearts of the "haters", while the other players we have lost are pretty much after thoughts.

You guys can exercise a way on Melo, maybe I'll jump in the Jr exercise or Amare or Chandler.

Maybe when your satisfied working out the Melo mental issues you have, we'll get around to working on something else???

Boy some posters really want Andrew and Martin to earn their pay don't they?

Having reviewed some on-topic input from others there were a couple areas of his game I missed which are pretty decent. At the same time it was interesting to see what some brought out in regards to the negatives.

Now I do pose this question....Does Melo have to improve on any of his weaknesses to get this team to the next level?

In regards to myself, it's not about being a negative critic or positive homer in regards to Melo but everything about appreciating and being thankful for one of the greatest offensive forces our franchise has ever featured. Melo's just a pure scoring/offensive phenom in whom I enjoy come game time.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Im not a hater or supporter either. As Knick fan Im just waiting for him to do something interesting here that will provide a Knick memory that will last more than a week. Winning a playoff series would be a good start. While we are already MVPs and CHAMPS in some folks minds I find winning the big games to be even more enjoyable than dreaming of it.

PS: by big games I was not refering to the Olympics

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I am a supporter, so I have no need to clinch to Dreams of average point guards taking over the nba like Godzilla or a 3rd wheel Euro scorer even sniffing Melo's jock strap. He is the best player the knicks have had in a looooooooooooong time and looking at where we are at right now,30-15 is better than a fiction 21-9 run. He deserves my support.

yes and in all that you said the point of the thread is to list both his strengths and his weaknesses.

i agree dk, this is a simple exercise.. as much as I have been called a hater, I had no problem listing both.. yet you get post like this, which just goes to show that those who complain about the so called "haters" seem to have very little interest in a balanced debate.... they are more about absolutes.... you don't like melo, you are a hater, you like him, you are a REAL fan... I find his post odd, bringing up players they say are getting too much attention around here, now that they are gone......

i know. lin and gallinari are always the players who get crapped on in order to boost melo. intellectually dishonest AND mean-spirited AND insulting to other posters "clinging" as though that were true. he achieved the trifecta right there ha ha.

i don't mind that much since the reluctance to participate in the exercise, or to instead answer with awards, accomplishments, racially-tinged insinuations of other posters, or other sorts of irrelevancies etc. etc does separate the wheat from the chaff.

yea, it is mean spirited, but most of all it just shows a lot of insecurity in regards to this trade.... the so called gallo and lin lovers have moved on... I am cool watching the, play in Houston and Denver, the problem is, some are not happy that others are cool with watching other teams play..... again, they deal in absolutes.... hate one aspect of a team, you hate the team... go figure..

anyway, don't want to jump off topic any longer.. good thread, or good try at least. I thought it was a good idea...

Sounds about right.

LOL

But yes let us have a mental exercise over the symbol of your depression.

OAN the thread is garbage, no one should have to pick a side, this really is nothing but a ploy to further alienate the fanbase of this board.

nobody is asking you to pick a side. there are many posters who are willing to list both his strengths and his weaknesses.

as i said earlier i am trying to push the reset button and create some good will.

maybe you will reconsider, along with the others listed below, who also seem reluctant or hell bent on maintaining the status quo:

nykmentality
misterearl
anji
supreme commander
papabear
nupe
anubisadl

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%
