Yea, I would have preferred someone like Putz but he would be too costly prospect-wise. The next step is to add 2 more good arms to the pen and find a starter.

Sounds like the Mets have locked up K-Rod on a 3 year deal. Obviously they needed him and it's a good job by Minaya for getting him on a shorter deal but that guy has turned into a tightrope walker. He's a big improvement over what they had when Wagner wasn't there but he'll make you sweat. He doesn't throw as hard anymore and relies on his changeup and slider a little too much.

i agree with this. guy looks like he can get hurt on his next pitch. but you're forgetting about the NL factor. AL pitchers seem to go the NL and just dominate.

Exactly, like Zito.

I disagree. He threw a lot of good games against the Yankees and had really good stuff. They had to grind it out against him. I think he just lost velocity and nothing to complement his wicked curveball. Hitters were just sitting on the offspeed stuff knowing that Zito couldn't get a fastball by them.

Whatever happened to him really happened quickly. You would think he would be a great fit in SF with it's ridiculous pitcher's park, especially for a lefty. Talk about an albatross contract.

i gotta give credit to omar tho - he needed a closer, went after the #1 closer in the market and got him signed very quickly. with the saturated closer market, krod probably wouldn't have gotten a better offer elsewhere so he took it and probably has no problems playing in ny.

“The Mets are looking at Pirates RHP Matt Capps and a few others, in addition to Rockies RHP Huston Street, as they begin to focus on a set-up man,” reports Jon Heyman on his live blog for SI.com.

Heyman also believes the Mets have talked to the Cubs and Mariners about ‘relief help.’

In 214 appearances in his four-year career, Capps, 25, is 15–11 with a 3.06 ERA through 217 innings, during which opponents are hitting .243 against while striking out 162 times.

Capps is eligible for arbitration in 2010 and 2011, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.

i dont see it happening because it will probably cost niese. Chad Cordero or Brandon Lyon are more likely.

best route to go for middle relievers is to build from within. if you don't have young arms for the pen then the second best option is free agency. you don't want to trade any young players for a reliever.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are close to acquiring Mariners reliever J.J. Putz in a three-team trade. Putz and K-Rod will be quite a late inning tandem. The Indians are also involved in the trade. Other players in the mix: Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Mike Carp, and Franklin Gutierrez. Rosenthal is not sure yet who's heading where.

If he's healthy and can prove that last season was a fluke, that would be a great move for the Mets. They still need a front of the rotation starter to make the bullpen really matter though.

That would be a steal for the Mets so I don't know if I believe it or not.

If Omar manages to swing that he deserves EOY award. That is a straight-up mugging.

Under terms of the deal, the Mets would get Putz, outfielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green. The Mariners would receive reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets. They'd also get Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians and minor leaguers. The Indians would get reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder Luis Valbuena from Seattle

I can't believe it. deal is done. mets rebuilt their pen without costing much of anything, on to other things now.

Putz-KRod has to be one of the best 8-9 combos in the league.

It is. I think it's probably the best. If this deal goes through, the Mets are looking pretty good..

Maybe Sanchez will finally be back to form and you can count on him in the 7th next year.

LAS VEGAS – The New York Mets acquired Seattle Mariners closer J.J. Putz in a three-way trade that also included the Cleveland Indians, two sources said Wednesday evening at the winter meetings.

The Mets pursuit of Putz underscores the extent to which they want to rebuild their bullpen, which blew a crippling 29 saves last season and led to a September collapse for the second year in a row. Only a day ago, New York signed closer Francisco Rodriguez to a three-year, $37 million deal with a vesting option for a fourth year.

Apparently Putz would be utilized as the eighth-inning setup reliever. He had 15 saves last season while fighting injuries, and had 40 saves in 2007 and 36 in 2006. He is owed $6 million next season, the last year of his contract, although there is a club option for $8.6 million in 2010.

Although all the names in the massive deal aren’t known, the Indians acquired infielder Luis Valbuena from the Mariners and reliever Joe Smith from the Mets, while the Mariners picked up outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians. One source had the Mets getting another reliever – 6-foot-6 right-hander Sean Green – and outfielder Jeremy Reed from the Mariners. The Mariners might also have gotten swingman Aaron Heilman from the Mets and another outfielder from one of the clubs. Minor leaguers also were part of the deal.

“The Mariners got the most players out of the deal,” a source said.

Feliciano-Schoenweiss-Stokes-Parnell-Green-Sanchez-Putz-FRod....not bad, seems like this recent trade makes one expendable. 2 Starters and possibly an offensive upgrade is still needed.

Great deal for the Mets. Putz has to show he's back to 2006 and 2007 form but he is in a contract year. I wonder how Putz will feel being a setup guy in a contract year.

mets had the best team in the NL last year (and the year before). and they will have the best team in the NL this year. now, they just have to go out and prove it. they are all in and need to get to the series. putz + krod = division title by a good margin...
